Parishioners of all ages can join with others in the work of serving our brothers and sisters in need through our parish conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Hunger Walk at Soldier Field benefitting local food pantries, a Friends of the Poor 5k Run/Walk through Lincoln Park, and outreach to immigrants to this county.

LENTEN RECONCILIATION APRIL 2 The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, April 2 in the church. This will be in conjunction with the new monthly Monday evening Eucharistic Adoration. Individual confessions will be offered in English or in Spanish. This time is available for those who want to participate in this sacrament during Holy Week to look at oneself, to strengthen one’s desire for personal change as a follower of Christ, and to receive His forgiveness and the encouraging graces of the Church. Please prayerfully consider this opportunity.

SCOUTS PLAN RECIPE COLLECTION The Queen of Angels Boy Scout Troop 894 will be collecting wonderful family recipes to create the 2012 Queen of Angels Parish Cookbook. Any kind of recipe is welcome along with a brief history or story about your family recipe. Cookbooks will be available early this fall. Please neatly print or type the recipe along with a brief story (optional) and your name and phone number (in case there is a question). NOTES ON THE ORGAN There is still time to donate to the restoration work for the Moller organ that has graced Queen of Angels for decades. Donation envelopes were included in last week’s Guide. Or simply place your donation in an envelope marked “Organ Fund.” The releathering project is designed to breathe new life into parts of the organ that are showing signs of wear and tear. This is not a cosmetic upgrade. This is a vital necessity to keep the organ from losing the ability to create specific notes. Several notes are already “missing” and we don’t want to compromise the integrity of the musical instrument at all. It is a classic and needs to remain so. There are so many causes that require financial assistance and support. When deciding where your charitable dollars go, please consider a lasting treasure like the Moller organ. LOOKING AHEAD TO ADVISORY BOARD ELECTIONS If you are interested in running for a board position on either the Athletic, Commons or School Board, candidacy packets are now available from the school office.
-- The Athletic Board will be seeking five candidates to fill four 3-year terms and one 1-year term.
-- The School Board will have five openings, including four 3-year terms and one 2-year term. Representation is welcome from parishioners who do not currently have children in the parish school but would like to help.
-- Commons will seek to fill the Vice President and Treasurer positions.
Meeting dates and times are posted on the school website. Please give thoughtful consideration to volunteering your time and talents to one of these essential boards.

FRIENDS OF THE POOR BENEFIT The Society of St. Vincent dePaul will host the fourth annual Friends of the Poor Benefit from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 15 at the Drury Lane Oakbrook Terrace. SSVD REFLECTS... In the Gospel today, we find that Jesus would rise very early before dawn and go to a deserted place to pray and then he went out to preach and to heal. Praying for the poor can bring the love and peace of Jesus to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread.

YUMMY! THIRD GRADE BAKE SALE It’s time to bake for the Third Grade Bake Sale on February 16. Your baking expertise is needed. Please bring cookies, brownies, muffins and other goodies to Room 208 on Wednesday, February 15 or Thursday, February 16. All proceeds from this service project will be donated to a charity benefitting children. (Students who donate a baked good will be rewarded with an out-of-uniform day on the day of the Bake Sale.) If your baked good is made with peanuts or tree nuts, please clearly note it. Please individually pack baked goods.

COACHES NEEDED The Athletic Board is looking for individuals with knowledge of the sport of volleyball to coach both our 5th grade girls team and 6th grade boys team. Coaches will need to be able to hold two practices a week and make all the games. The 5th grade girls league is administered through St. Bartholomew School and games are played on Friday nights, Saturday and Sunday mornings. Teens and Young Adults Update

In this Year of Teens and Young Adults, we continue to recognize and celebrate the gifts of young Catholics while calling them to greater participation in the life of the parish. Teen parishioners prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation, receive honors from their Catholic high schools, and lead their peers on Kairos retreats. Young adults are invited to take part in a Super Bowl Party at neighboring St. Benedict Parish.

SSVD NEEDS BOYS’ CLOTHES The Society of St. Vincent DePaul is looking for winter clothes for a 10-year-old boy. He wears size 14-16 boys in coats and size 4.5-5 in boots. If you have used winter clothes in these sizes, please bring them to the parish office during the week or to the church gathering space after Mass. If you have other clothing items you would like to donate, the clothing box for the Society of St. Vincent dePaul has been moved to the St. Matthias Parish parking lot, located at 4934 N. Claremont.

THANK YOU FROM LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR
On behalf of our family of Little Sisters and Residents, thank you for the opportunity to visit your parish last summer and for the gift of $2,255.03 made possible by the generosity of Queen of Angels parishioners. Your generosity enables us to continue our mission of caring for the elderly poor.
On October 11 we marked our two-year anniversary of the Canonization of our Mother Foundress, St. Jeanne Jugan. This wonderful honor, recognized throughout the world, gives us a renewed passion for continuing the important work of St. Jeanne Jugan. The Little Sisters of the Poor have continued her tradition of opening their homes to the elderly poor, treating each person with respect and dignity, and providing a home filled with care and love until the Lord himself calls them home. Strengthened by our faith, we are assured the Lord will provide for the needs of those he confides to our care.
Thank you for your help in continuing the work of St. Jeanne Jugan. It is a privilege for each of us because as she said, “ In caring for the elderly poor, we care for Jesus.”

KICKS FOR RAMS Let’s hear it for Seamus McDonagh, one of eight Gordon Tech Rams football players recognized as all-conference selections. In addition, Julian Leon was named an all-conference selection for soccer, also representing Gordon Tech. These gentlemen are continuing the outstanding athletic careers they began at Queen of Angels School.

IT’S BOWLING SEASON! The Ravenswood Catholic Young Adults (RCYA) will be bowling on Monday evenings beginning November 7 through the end of February at Lincoln Square Lanes, 4874 N. Lincoln Ave. (above the hardware store). Lincoln Square Lanes has agreed to host the group for a mere $4.50 per game per person and $4 per person for shoe rental. Bowling will be every Monday beginning at 7:30 p.m. through the end of February. All skill levels are invited. This is a great way to meet fellow parishioners and strengthen ties with the community. VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR ADULT CHOIR If you love to sing and have a passion for sacred music, please consider auditioning for the Queen of Angels Adult Choir. We are looking to expand our voices this season and we are currently seeking volunteers from the congregation. The choir will sing three Sundays a month. Rehearsals are conducted before and after Mass so there is a minimal time commitment. And if singing is not your forte but you still have a passion for music and some spare time on your hands, then join our supporting staff. We are always in need of extra hands to help organize our choir banquets, promote choir functions and assist with the basic weekly needs of the many choirs at Queen of Angels Parish. We would love to have you join us in music and fellowship this season. HIGH SCHOOL OPEN HOUSES
-- St. Scholastica Academy, 7416 N. Ridge, will host an open house today from 2 to 4 p.m. for sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls. Learn about the International Baccalaureate honors program, college-preparatory curriculum, sports and co-curricular opportunities including an arts program.
-- Loyola Academy, 1100 Laramie Ave., Wilmette, will host an open house from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, November 17 for sixth, seventh and eighth graders. Eighth graders are invited to participate in a Shadow Day to see what it is like at the school. To sign up, call 847-920-2481.

JASC ON THE MOVE! The Jane Addams Senior Caucus (JASC), Lakeview Action Coalition and allied groups will rally November 7 under Senators’ windows at the Federal Plaza, Dearborn and Adams, to demand Senators Durbin and Kirk work to preserve safety net programs such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and HUD housing programs. The rally starts at 10:15 a.m. Monday and the march starts at 11 a.m. “Many older women, especially older women of color, would suffer the brunt of these cuts,” said Mary Elizabeth Burns, a retired nurse’s assistant and leader of the Jane Addams Senior Caucus. The “Super Congressional Committee” is meeting behind closed doors eying cuts to safety net programs. If you cannot come, please support the effort with your prayers. Summertime at Q of A

Summertime may bring about a slower pace of life for many of our parishioners, but there are a number of summer events and activities going strong through the summer at Queen of Angels. Reunions for school alumni and former Choristers, a summer choir for high school and college youth, a toiletries drive for the homeless and Theology on Tap faith discussion events for adults are among the programs available during the summer months.

NORTH SIDE KAIROS FEATURED ON ARCHDIOCESAN BLOG
If you are a teen who attended Kairos either through North Side Kairos or through a Catholic high school, or a teen or parent wanting to know more about how this retreat can affect young lives, be sure to check out "KAIROS Retreats Helping Teenagers Grow in the Faith," the latest entry on the official blog for the Archdiocese of Chicago.

The North Side Kairos Retreat is a four-day retreat for North Side Chicago teens who have just completed their sophomore, junior or senior years of high school. On Kairos, you are invited to reflect on relationships with yourself, friends, family and God. The four days of Kairos are an opportunity to heal, rejoice, question, explore the Catholic faith, meet new people and have fun. The retreat began in 2000 with co-sponsorship from Queen of Angels and St. Matthias Parishes, St. Ignatius Parish in Rogers Park, and St. Nicholas Parish in Evanston.

The North Side Kairos Retreat is a four-day retreat for North Side Chicago teens who have just completed their sophomore, junior or senior years of high school. On Kairos, you are invited to reflect on relationships with yourself, friends, family and God. The four days of Kairos are an opportunity to heal, rejoice, question, explore the Catholic faith, meet new people and have fun.

Youth Liturgical Ministers Needed

OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
If you have been Confirmed, you are eligible to serve as an Extraordinary Minister of Communion or a Lector at Queen of Angels. Training sessions with other teens will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the church on the following days:

-- Lectors: Thursday, May 19 or Wednesday, May 25
-- Ministers of Communion: Tuesday, May 17 or Wednesday, May 18

During weekend Masses, Lectors read aloud the First and Second Readings or Prayers of the Faithful, and Extraordinary Ministers of Communion help distribute Holy Communion. If you are interested in exploring these ministries, reserve your spot at a training by contacting Rachel at the parish office, 773-539-7510 or rhohner@queenofangelschicago.org. Attending separate trainings for each type of service is necessary if you want to check out both.
