Letter from Father Jim / Carta del Padre Jim

Dear Friends,

As plans for Winter Toast heat up, Queen of Angels School prepares to celebrate 100 Years of Change, following the parish’s centennial of Sharing and Caring. These mottos were carefully chosen to embody the spirit of Queen of Angels-- and also to give room for thought.

Winter Toast: "Wine, the Nectar of the Gods!"

WT_logo
Yes, it’s back: the third annual Queen of Angels Cellar prize. That’s right -- we’ll be auctioning off a complete 100-bottle cellar of wine February 20 at the Winter Toast. But in order to make it happen, we need everyone to do his or her part. Parishioners, school parents and any interested party over 21, we need your wine donations!

Previous lucky winners told us how much they liked the variety of the wines they received: reds, white, rosés, port -- we want all the good stuff! All you have to do is find a bottle of wine you would be proud to serve, and drop it off in the school or parish office.

Our goal is to collect 100 or more bottles to be auctioned off as a complete cellar. If you don’t have a bottle handy and are interested in shopping locally, say no more. You can stop by either Fine Wine Brokers, 4621 N. Lincoln Avenue, or Provenance, 2312 W. Leland. The folks at both of these fine shops will be glad to help you pick out something fabulous within your budget and you can leave your bottle right at the store. What’s more, for every ten bottles that are collected at Fine Wine Brokers and Provenance, they will donate one of their personal favorites. How’s that for a deal? In addition, when you shop locally, it’s estimated that 67% of what you spend stays in your community.

Maybe you can’t donate the week-long Caribbean vacation, but we are hopeful you can contribute your favorite bottle of wine. The more of us who participate, the better it will be. We would love to have everyone be a part of this valuable, one-of-a-kind auction item. Donations will be accepted until February 19. If you have questions or need to arrange for a different drop off/pick up spot, please contact KJ Bradley at kjbrad@sbcglobal.net or Eileen Moran at 773-267-5740 or eileenmoran67@hotmail.com. Thanks in advance for your participation.

Winter Toast Needs Your Stuff
Winter Toast is Queen of Angels’ largest fundraiser, and the majority of the funds it raises come from a live and silent auction. We take your donations and transform them into lots to be auctioned off between 6 p.m. and midnight Saturday, February 20 in the Guild Hall. We would love to have terrific participation because the most interesting prizes always come from you and we are looking to update our selection.
Over the past couple of years, Queen of Angels folks have donated a staggering variety of items — everything from airlines miles to meat to six-packs! — to Winter Toast. We have turned these donations into $178,000 for the parish and school and that money has been used to pay for operating expenses, academic programs and ministry support.

We are asking for you to contribute anything you can. Specifically, we’re looking for airline miles; event tickets; vacation homes or timeshares; golf foursomes; gift certificates; liquor, wine, beer, champagne; services of any kind — artistic, culinary, home repair or whatever.

Not everyone has a corn-fed steer or backstage CSO passes lying around the house. Maybe you would like to join the solicitation team as we go about asking businesses that do have these (and many more) things. All it takes is a mouth and a modicum of courage. Please think about what you have or can get, put it into our hands, and we will figure out a way to auction it off.

If you have anything to donate or want to join in the fun of acquiring donations, please contact Erin at Erin_Shea@shealawgroup.com or at 773-365-0030. To you, it’s a certificate for an eyebrow wax. To us, it’s a better tomorrow for our parish community.

FUND TO HELP FAMILIES IN NEED DEPLETED Once a month, the collection includes the regular weekly offering and the monthly Lyman Scholarship Fund. The Lyman Scholarship Fund was established to help families in need of assistance in making a tuition payment. The school is a very important part of our parish’s mission.
Contributing to the scholarship fund in someone’s name is a wonderful way to remember a loved one. Your generosity will help continue the mission of Queen of Angels in providing a quality Catholic education.
A record number of families benefited from the Lyman Fund last school year, depleting the fund. An even larger number of families this year are seeking assistance. Your help is needed to make sure no child is denied an education at Queen of Angels School because a tuition payment is missed.
Please be as generous as you can. Use the green envelope provided in your envelope pack or simply place your donation in an envelope marked “Lyman Fund.” The Lyman collection is generally the first Sunday of the month but donations are accepted at any time. Helping a family in need continues the mission of our church. The next Lyman Scholarship Fund collection will be Sunday, February 7. Thank you for your generosity and sacrifice.

MEN’S CLUB HOOPS CONTINUES ON THURSDAY Men of the parish are invited to the weekly session of Men’s Club Hoops at 9 p.m. Thursdays in the Guild Hall Gym. Donation is $10 weekly plus an annual Men’s Club membership of $15. Join a bunch of 30-, 40-, 50- and 60-year olds trying to make it up and down the court for a couple hours each week. A liability waiver must be signed prior to lacing up the sneakers. Concessions are served immediately after the grueling play, along with lively discussions around our 62” HDTV!
Men’s Club also meets on the third Thursday of each month at 8 p.m. in the Voss Center. Join us for pizza and beer. There is a $5 donation per meeting. Men’s Club Hoops follows each meeting. Men’s Club events include the Fall Golf Outing, Family Gym Nights, high school scholarship funding, gym improvements, Annual Membership Dinner and the St. Paddy’s Day Party. For more information, call Pat McQuillan at 773-575-4483.

MASS FOR KATHY COLE On November 22, 2009, SPRED friend and Queen of Angels parishioner Kathy Cole passed away. Her life will be celebrated at the 9 a.m. Mass Saturday, January 16, 2010.
Perhaps you were unable to attend the funeral or did not hear of her passing. Perhaps you were present at the funeral but welcome another opportunity to share the beauty of Kathy’s life. Whatever the circumstance, please attend this memorial Mass for our friend, Kathy Cole.

Queen of Angels can simplify your shopping with Shop with the Angels. Jewel, Dominick’s, Starbucks, Panera, Mobil, BP and Shell gift cards will be in stock. Order forms are available for other purchases. You determine where your profits go: to the parish, Lyman Fund or a school tuition account. Thanks for your support of this winning fundraiser.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD The 9:30 Sunday liturgies offer an opportunity for children to hear the readings and prayers of the Mass in words that are familiar to them. The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is designed for children ages 3 through early primary grades. Young children and their catechists have a great time together sharing prayer and reflection on the Sunday readings.
The experience created at the Children’s Liturgy parallels that of all the faithful worshipping at Mass each week. Children are blessed by the priest before the First Reading, walk together downstairs to the Children’s Liturgy chapel space, and return upstairs to their families later in the Mass. The reunion of families in time for the consecration and Communion is a sign of the union of the Church in this holy sacrament.
Volunteers are needed and materials are provided. Please consider this opportunity to guide our young ones. For more information on this important ministry, please contact Albert Ferolie at 773-283-9428.

FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Every Friday, the Blessed Sacrament is placed out for veneration and prayer from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. To reach the Adoration Chapel, enter the church through the Claremont door, walk up the stairs, turn to the left and then to the left again. Walk down the passage behind the altar and enter the former baptistery where the Eucharist is exposed for veneration.
At some time during the day, stop by the chapel for some quiet time with the Lord. Help us keep vigil with the Lord by making time on Fridays for these beautiful moments of prayer.
Bring your thoughts and your bible, rosary, and books, or use the prayer resources in the adoration chapel. Spend some time with Jesus in the form of the Blessed Sacrament. Visitors are asked to register attendance in the sign-in book in the chapel when attending Adoration. You may sign up for a particular hour of prayer every week. Call Christine Murphy at 773-561-9072.

CHOIR CD AVAILABLE It’s not too late to get a copy of the new CD, O Magnum Mysterium, featuring the Queen of Angels choirs. The CD features favorite carols and choir anthems of the Christmas Season. The cost is $20. Proceeds support the Music Ministry at Queen of Angels. The CD can be purchased through the Parish Center. Call 773-539-7510.

CHECK OUT MARKET DAY Looking for convenience and high quality in food choices for your family? Market Day fits the bill and helps Queen of Angels School, too! Pick up a Market Day order form in church or school or check out the Market Day website at www.marketday.com to see more than 200 restaurant quality food items. Order deadline is noon, Wednesday, January 27 on the internet. Pick-up is 9:15 a.m. Saturday, January 30 at the Guild Hall Gym. Willing to help? Have questions? Call Nancy at 773-539-7510.

SATURDAY ROSARY Join us to pray the Rosary after each 9 a.m. Saturday Mass. To volunteer to lead the Rosary, contact Joann at 773-583-1371 or green3256@yahoo.com.

NICODEMUS MINISTRY When a parishioner dies, the priest celebrates the Mass of Christian Burial. The final Prayers of Commendation at the cemetery are led by a lay person. Laity are urged to lead their brothers and sisters in prayer. It is a sign that when a parishioner dies, other members of the parish—and not just the priest—pray. Volunteers are needed to minister to grieving families. Follow the kindness of Nicodemus who, with Joseph of Arimathea, buried Jesus. Training is provided. Call 773-539-7510.

SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEK
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Although Latin America is home to the largest number of Catholics in the world, the Church is experiencing an alarming decline in membership, for a variety of complex reasons. The unstable global economy has played a part, as has a low priest-to-parishioner ratio that makes it difficult to teach the faith and make the sacraments available in a consistent matter. Additionally, migration across the region has ruptured the bonds of family and community in which the Catholic faith is supported and passed down from generation to generation.
This year’s Collection for the Church in Latin America will be directed towards a comprehensive evangelization effort, as well as towards the formation of seminarians, catechists, and lay ministers in more than 200 dioceses. So many are attuned to alleviating material poverty, which is of course necessary and a part of the Church’s efforts anywhere she is present. However, as Mother Teresa once pointed out, life without God is a much greater poverty than any material deprivation.
Through your generous support of this collection, you will help the Church to rebuild her strong presence in Latin America. Your contribution will ensure that millions of people can come to experience the Lord’s love in the sacraments and in strong local parish communities.
I am grateful for all you do to support your local parish, as well as the Church in other parts of the world. May God, who is never outdone in generosity, bless you and your loved ones in this New Year.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
-- Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago

-- Cardenal Francis George, O.M.I., Arzobispo de Chicago

MASS FOR KATHY COLE On November 22, 2009, SPRED friend and Queen of Angels parishioner Kathy Cole passed away. Her life will be celebrated at the 9 a.m. Mass Saturday, January 16, 2010.
Perhaps you were unable to attend the funeral or did not hear of her passing. Perhaps you were present at the funeral but welcome another opportunity to share the beauty of Kathy’s life. Whatever the reason, please attend this memorial Mass for our friend, Kathy Cole.

A PRAYER FOR OUR PRIESTS As the Church celebrates the Year of the Priest through June 19, 2010, let us pause during the week to give thanks and remember Fr. Jim Kaczorowski and Fr. John Griffiths for all they do to make God alive at Queen of Angels Parish.
Almighty God, in your love
You bless your Church with priests,
A sign of your faithfulness to your people.
May our prayerful encouragement,
During this year and years to come,
Help them remain faithful to the calling
They have received from you.
As they tend your flock, grant them a caring heart.
In them may we know the voice of Christ,
Our Good Shepherd, who lives and reigns
With you and the Holy Spirit,
One God forever and ever. Amen.

CATHOLICS COME HOME If you’ve been away from the Church, we welcome you and invite you to take a look at all our parish has to offer. See our representative in church at all the weekend Masses or call 773-539-7510. Welcome home!

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Are you willing to set aside time for a worthwhile evening? In SPRED, adult friends with developmental disabilities are partnered with a volunteer catechist. When we meet with our friends we provide a place of peace to help them discover a sense of personal dignity and develop a spirit of prayer. We spend some time working on activities which settle us and help us to focus on the present. We then retire to the Holy Room, our mini chapel, where we share life stories; listen to the Word of Our Lord; sing and enjoy calming music; and share joyfully in the restful silence. We close our session with a simple sharing of food and fellowship – called Agape. We talk and laugh and enjoy the companionship of each other.
Sessions have a calming and renewing influence on all of us as they deepen our awareness of God’s presence and love in our lives. This wonderful opportunity is offered only 24 evenings a year. You will be delighted with what we have to offer for you as you give yourself to one of our very special friends.
To find out more about SPRED, call Joann Salas at 773-583-1371 or Julia Hess in the SPRED office at 773-539-3634. Thank you so much.
—- Mary Murray, a most satisfied volunteer catechist

CENTENNIAL ALBUM ON THE WAY The Centennial Album will include many cherished memories from our parish’s 100 Years of Sharing and Caring. We invite you to advertise your business or offer your family’s congratulations to the parish in this book. You may also provide a name for the Legacy listing or be recognized with an Angel Sponsorship. The deadline will be January 4, 2010, so please call Rachel at 773-539-7510 today!

EARLY DEADLINE, HOLIDAY HOURS The Parish Center will be closed Monday, December 28 and will reopen for regular business hours Tuesday, December 29. In observance of New Year’s, the Parish Center will close at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 31 and will reopen at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, January 2, 2010.

LOVE THE 80s AND 90s? The Centennial Historical Committee is seeking information and materials tied to parish life at Queen of Angels in the 1980s and 1990s. Please consider submitting photographs, remembrances, parish bulletins or any other artifacts that may be in your attic or basement. Contact 773-539-7510 or parish@queenofangelschicago.org.

FUND TO HELP FAMILIES IN NEED Once a month, the collection includes the regular weekly offering and the monthly Lyman Scholarship Fund. The Lyman Scholarship Fund was established to help families in need of assistance in making a tuition payment. And the school is a very important part of our parish’s mission.
Contributing to the scholarship fund in someone’s name is a wonderful way to remember a loved one. Your generosity will help continue the mission of Queen of Angels in providing a quality Catholic education.
A record number of families benefited from the Lyman Fund last school year, depleting the fund. And an even larger number of families this year are seeking assistance. Your help is needed to make sure no child is denied an education at Queen of Angels School.
Please be as generous as you can. Use the green envelope provided in your envelope pack or simply place your donation in an envelope marked “Lyman Fund.” The Lyman collection is generally the first Sunday of the month but donations are accepted at any time. Helping a family in need ensures the future of our church. The Lyman Scholarship Fund collection will be next Sunday, January 3.
Thank you for your generosity and sacrifice.

MASS INTENTIONS Intentions may be placed for Sunday, weekday, holy day or holiday Masses in 2010. Volunteers are needed for this ministry. Training and materials are provided. Please consider this opportunity to guide our young ones. For more information, or to volunteer, contact Albert Ferolie at 773-283-9428.

A CHANCE TO WELOME THOSE WHO HAVE DRIFTED AWAY Perhaps you have heard of the massive outreach to Catholics who have drifted away from the Church. The Archdiocese of Chicago along with the Diocese of Rockford and the Diocese of Joliet are undertaking an evangelization initiative – Catholics Come Home – that invites our sisters and brothers back to the practice of the faith.
This evangelization initiative began this week and will continue through the end of January. Over 2,000 television ads will air on the major area networks in English, Spanish and Polish. These ads encourage those who have drifted away to come back home.
There are 20 million Catholics in the USA who no longer practice the faith or do so sporadically. This is in addition to the 70 million Catholics who are more active. In fact, if one takes the number of those who have drifted away, it adds to the second largest religion in the USA, practicing Catholics being the first. Amazing, isn’t it, that so many have drifted away? We need to invite our brothers and sisters to join us!
The ads airing on television are the first step – inviting – in this evangelization initiative. The other two overlapping steps are welcoming and accompanying. The site www.CatholicsComeHomeCHICAGO.org will help you with additional information.
While ads might help, nothing is more effective than a personal invitation. Invite someone you know to come back home to the Catholic Church. And to anyone reading this bulletin article that is returning to the Church this Christmas season, welcome! Check out the website!

¡Necesitamos invitar a nuestros hermanos y hermanas a unirse a nosotros!

CHOIR CD AVAILABLE The new Christmas CD, O Magnum Mysterium, featuring the Queen of Angels choirs, can be purchased after all Masses this weekend. Winter Toast

6 p.m. to Midnight Saturday, February 23 Queen of Angels Guild Hall

You can’t have an auction without auction items and this year we are pleased to offer several impossible-to-get-anywhere-else packages. Get your bidding team together and devise your strategy because the competition is bound to be fierce.

Your Own Caribbean Boutique Hotel We tried to get you the whole island. We really did. But you’ll just have to settle for having this Spanish-colonial-style six-room hotel all to yourself for a long weekend. Fly to Cancun then escape it with a 20-minute ferry ride to the sleepy Mexican paradise Isla Mujeres. Perfect for six couples, 12 friends, three families or anyone with a pulse and passport who appreciates being a short stroll away from gourmet dining, quiet beaches and a quaint village.

The Frozen Tundra Tailgate Package A luxury motor home will chauffeur eight holders of the NFL’s most-impossible-to-get tickets to the 2008 Bears-Packers game at Lambeau Field. First we’re taking you to a Green Bay potluck-style tailgate. Then you will watch the game from spectacular seats, handed down from generation to generation for half a century. Post-game it’s off to a cocktail party at Curly Lambeau’s birth home. We promise to have you back to civilization (Chicago) in time for ESPN post-game highlights.

Chicagoland Brewery Tour It’s beer country not wine country so discover Chicago’s craft breweries with this eight-person package. Each stop consists of a tour, tastings and appetizers at some of the country’s top brewpubs. We will chauffeur your group from Lincoln Square throughout the metro area in style and comfort. Naturally, we wouldn’t want you to get thirsty between your sudsy ports-of-call so we are stocking plenty of refreshments for the ride. Tour date is flexible for a Saturday in 2008.

The I’ll Take Manhattan Package Enjoy a long weekend in the Park Avenue building Katie Couric and Stockard Channing call home. It’s just a short walk to use your free passes at the Metropolitan Museum of Art or go for a jog on the Central Park reservoir running track once favored by Jackie Kennedy. Then jump on the subway with your free passes or hit a Broadway musical. After all, you have a $100 gift certificate to help defray the cost of your seats. After the show enjoy dinner for two on us at Carmine’s and head home to your Upper East Side apartment or don’t. It is, of course, the city that never sleeps.

Chef’s Dinner Tonight’s Chef de Cuisine Andy Vaitkus will prepare a gourmet dinner party for eight in your own home. You discuss the menu. He does everything else. Couldn’t be easier or more delicious.

You’ll want to be at Winter Toast to bid on these packages. So buy your ticket or buy a table and land together as a group to bid on an auction item.

— All proceeds will benefit Queen of Angels Church and School —
