A REFLECTION FROM SSVD... In today’s Gospel Jesus says, “If a man wishes to come after me, he must deny his very self, take up his cross and follow in my steps.” The cross of Jesus and the crosses of his members can evangelize us: the sick, who bear illness with courage; the grieving, who hope against hope; the dying, who clearly trust in the resurrection; the suffering of our poor brothers and sisters who are hungry and homeless, but who still trust in God’s love. Is there a neighbor or friend of yours who is in temporary need because of a loss of job or an illness? Please leave a message at the Parish Center for the Society of St. Vincent dePaul... we want to help!

NICODEMUS MINISTERS NEEDED The shortest verse in the entire Bible is: “And Jesus wept” (John 11:35). Why does that short sentence merit its own verse? Perhaps it is because at that moment, Jesus does what we all may do when someone we love dies: he grieves for a friend. Will you volunteer to help a grieving family by praying with them at their loved one’s final resting place? The consolation and prayers you offer are a sign of the parish’s love and support. Follow the kindness of Nicodemus who, with Joseph of Arimathea, buried Jesus. Training provided. The need is urgent for Nicodemus Ministers. This ministry may be a good fit for a parisnhioner who is retired, works from home, or has flexible time during the late morning and early afternoon hours any Monday through Saturday. Training and orientation provided. Call 773-539-7510.

WORDS OF LIFE...
"Hormonal contraceptives significantly increase women’s risk of developing the following: blood clots that can lead to fatal heart attacks, strokes and pulmonary embolisms; breast cancer, cervical cancer and liver tumors; loss of bone density; and changes in metabolism causing loss of libido, weight gain, moodiness and migraines. Women using the contraceptive patch, for example, are almost eight times more likely to develop blood clots than women not using hormonal contraceptives; more than 360 young women using the patch, contraceptive ring or Yaz/Yasmin pills have died in recent years due to heart attacks, strokes or pulmonary embolisms seen as associated with these drugs and devices." -- Susan E. Wills, JD, LLM, “Life Matters: Contraceptives and Women’s Well-Being,” Respect Life Program, 2012
-- Susan E.
