DO YOU RECALL FATHER PHIL? If you were a member of Queen of Angels between 1985 and 1995, you remember the big man with the big voice. Fr. Phil Dressler wrote, “I was blessed to be one of 35 men ordained at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary on May 1, 1961. I was humbled and blessed to be part of the Queen of Angels Parish Community as pastor from 1985 to 1995. On May 1, I will celebrate my 50 years of priesthood. The Mass will be at noon at St. Juliana Parish, 7200 N. Oketo Ave. May this be an invitation to join me in that celebration. Thank you for your love and your faith.”

PASSOVER MEAL, PRAYER SERVICE Queen of Angels School will celebrate the annual Passover Meal & Prayer Service on Holy Thursday, April 21 in the Guild Hall. This gathering brings the entire school community together in celebration with the songs, symbols and Passover foods of our ancestors in faith. If you are interested in helping at this event, please call the school at 773-769-4211. The students will gather to commemorate this ancient ritual in preparation of our own Paschal rites. After the Passover Meal, children will return to school for lunch and to be dismissed at 1 pm. School will resume after Easter on Wednesday, April 27.

EARLY DEADLINE FOR EASTER BULLETIN Due to the Palm Sunday and Easter holidays, there are early deadlines for both issues of The Guide. The deadline for item submission for the April 17 Guide has already passed. The deadline for the April 24 issue will be this Thursday, April 14. Thank you for your cooperation!

SOMEONE NEEDS JESUS -- AND YOU! Someone is at home, lonely and unable to receive the Eucharist because he or she cannot leave their home to do so. That individual needs Jesus. That person needs you. What does Christ ask of us? He urges us to share the love of God in community and he promises that when two or three are gathered in His name, He is there, in our midst. Christ calls us to reach out to the poor, the needy, the lonely, and the marginalized. What could be more rewarding than something that makes everyone involved feel closer to God. Volunteers are needed for Ministers of Care, the ministry dedicated to bringing communion to homebound parishioners. This means approximately two hours, just once a month. Many of our volunteers have retired or relocated but the hunger for Christ continues in the homebound. Please consider this opportunity that brings joy to all involved. Call Fran Parks at 773-478-7254.

SHOP WITH THE ANGELS Target has joined the comprehensive list of retail gift certificates available through Shop With the Angels! Stop by the SWTA table before or after the 8 and 9:30 Masses on Sunday or call the Parish Center. Choose whether your profits go to the parish, the Lyman Scholarship Fund or towards a specific school tuition account. Stop by and order from a growing variety of retail gift cards.

JOIN THE FUN AT ANKLEBITERS Are you a parent of a small child? Are you looking for a fun activity to start your child’s week? Join us Mondays at 10 a.m. in the school basement. Enter using the north play lot entrance and arrive no later than 10:30 a.m. to sign in. This is for parents, caregivers and their children aged 3 and under. Contact Michelle Stork at 773-255-8133.

TRY IT, YOU’LL LIKE IT Market Day can streamline your food preparation with restaurant quality results and helps Queen of Angels School, too! Pick up a Market Day order form in church or school or visit www.marketday.com to see more than 200 quality food items. Market Day has healthy snacks, quick entrees, and a long line of convenience foods available. Market Day has been a long-time presence at Queen of Angels for a reason: the items are high quality and the profits go directly to the school. Why not make a difference and do some grocery shopping along the way? Online Market Day orders are due by 11 p.m. Wednesday, April 27. Delivery will be at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, April 30 at the Guild Hall. If you have questions or want to help, call Nancy at 773-539-7510.

SHARE EASTER SUNDAY WITH SOME FRIENDS Join others on Easter Sunday when people in nearby parish communities gather from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the St. Benedict Parish Social Center on the corner of Irving Park Road and Bell Avenue. All are welcome to this event. Food and volunteers are needed. Call St. Benedict at 773-588-6484 to make a reservation, donate food or volunteer from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. See you there!

NICODEMUS MINISTERS NEEDED The shortest verse in the entire Bible is in today’s Gospel: “And Jesus wept.” Why does that short sentence merit its own verse? Perhaps it is because at that moment, Jesus does what we all may do when someone we love dies: he grieves for his friend. Will you volunteer to help a grieving family by praying with them at their loved one’s final resting place? The consolation and prayers you offer are a sign of the parish’s love and support. Follow the kindness of Nicodemus who, with Joseph of Arimathea, buried Jesus. Training provided. Call the parish office at 773-539-7510.

INTENCIONES DE MISAS Para pedir una intención especial para una misa en inglés o español, por favor visite el Centro Parroquial. La donación sugerida es de $10 por misa. Llame a la oficina al 773-539-3176.

A WINNING SEASON: KNIGHTS KNEWS Congratulations to all our student basketball teams and their coaches for an amazing season. From our new 4th grade teams to the seasoned eighth graders, your hard work and determination was evident in every game, in your level of improvement.
For the first time in our school’s history, all four seventh and eighth grade teams were showcased in the championships! Thank you for your dedication and sportsmanship. We are all so very proud, and look forward to watching your continued growth on the court next year. The eighth grade boys won the championship in their division and stayed ahead of Northside Catholic Academy. Seventh grade boys worked hard, even though some were under the weather, but were defeated by Hardy Prep, taking second place in their division. Eighth grade girls played competitively against St. Andrew but ended up in second place for their division. Seventh grade girls also played St. Andrew and took second place in their division. The games were all exciting and we are so pleased our Knights took their teams so far.
Since the middle school teams did so well, several represented Queen of Angels at the All-Star games. Representing seventh grade girls were: Sophie Brooks and Kelsey Peterson. Representing seventh grade boys were James Folan, Patrick McDonagh and Lucas Simon. Representing eighth grade girls were Taylor Brooks, Rachel Brown and Gabi Castillo. Representing the eighth grade boys was Kendale Spain.
Cherub Basketball for first, second and third graders of our school continues through April. The program’s popularity grows as six teams are fielded. Volleyball for sixth grade girls and seventh and eighth grade boys and girls begins this month. Fifth grade girls began their season two weeks ago at St. Bart’s.

AN ADVENT ACTIVITY: REMEMBERING Here is a brief activity to get your family focused on the final days of Advent, in anticipation of the miracle of Christmas.
Allow just two minutes for each person in the group to find one item that holds a memory of a Christmas in the past. When the items are set on the table in the middle of the group, each person answers both questions:
-- What is your item and what memory does it hold?
-- Who gave you the item, and why are they special to you?
After everyone has answered, let the youngest person in the group tell what they remember of the very first Christmas. Who was there? What happened? Why was that day so special? Read the story of Jesus’ birth in the Bible at Luke 2:1-20.

CHRISTMAS DINNER AT ST. BENEDICT Why eat dinner alone on Christmas Day? Come to St. Benedict’s Christmas Dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

NICODEMUS MINISTRY When a parishioner dies, the priest celebrates the Mass of Christian Burial. The final Prayers of Commendation at the cemetery are led by a lay person. Laity are urged to lead their brothers and sisters in prayer. It is a sign that when a parishioner dies, other members of the parish -— and not just the priest -— pray. Volunteers are needed to minister to grieving families. Follow the kindness of Nicodemus who, with Joseph of Arimathea, buried Jesus. Training provided. Call the parish office at 773-539-7510.

CONCERT AT BASILICA The Oak Park Concert Chorale will present a free admission Christmas concert at 4 p.m. today, December 19 at the Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows, 3121 W. The event will be January 31 through February on Mondays and Tuesdays and was written by St. Hilary parishioner Barbara Georgans. Dinner includes appetizer, salad, entrée, dessert, a glass of wine (or soft drink) and a sip of retsina. Please call 773-844-7488 or 312-932-1230.

THOUGHT OF BEING A PRIEST? Mary, our Blessed Mother, is the greatest example of someone who placed al her trust in the Lord, despite not comprehending God’s plan for her. ONE DIME AT A TIME Did you know that each Box Tops coupon is worth a dime to Queen of Angels students? Last spring, our school earned more than $400 for our school library and classrooms through this program. Please clip Box Tops coupons from hundreds of products from Cheerios®, Betty Crocker®, Pillsbury®, Ziploc®, Kleenex®, Juicy Juice® and more. Drop off your coupons in the boxes outside the school office or at the back of church. Contact Mrs. Allen at aallen@queenofangelschicago.org or Mrs. Diaz at gdiaz@queenofangelschicago.org.

LABELS FOR EDUCATION The Labels for Education program is a great way to earn FREE merchandise for Queen of Angels School, and label collection and redemption is so easy. Participation in the program is simple! Save labels from eligible Campbell products and send them to the school. Let’s amplify our efforts by asking friends and family to collect labels on behalf of our school! Visit www.labelsforeducation.ca for a complete listing of eligible products and more information about the program. You can drop off labels at the school office or at the back of church. Thank you for your ongoing support. For more information, contact Mrs. Ami Allen at aallen@queenofangelschicago.org.

MASS INTENTIONS Remember your loved ones with intentions at weekday, holy day or weekend Mass. Offer the prayers of the Mass in the names of friends or relatives, living or deceased, for those in need of extra prayers or in honor of a beloved saint. Call 773-539-7510. Suggested donation is $10 per Mass.

CONCERT AT BASILICA The Oak Park Concert Chorale will present a free admission Christmas concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, December 19 at the Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows, 3121 W. Jackson Blvd. The concert, Christmas Lullaby, will feature carols, lullabies, anthems and motets. JOIN THE SECULAR FRANCISCANS Is God calling you to walk in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi? Members work together in local fraternities to deepen their spirituality and to strive to conform their lives more fully to the Gospel.   "Shout joyfully to the Lord, all you lands; worship the Lord with cries of gladness; come before Him with joyful song.  Know that the Lord is God, our maker to whom we belong, whose people we are, God's well-tended flock.  Enter the temple gates with praise, its courts with thanksgiving.  Give thanks to God, bless his name; good indeed is the Lord, whose love endures forever, whose faithfulness lasts through every age." -- Psalm 100

  • There will be just one Mass on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 25. That Mass will be at 9 a.m. and will be bilingual.
