"Care and Compassion"

Volunteering Update

Volunteers are being sought for two important ministries of Queen of Angels Parish. Our SPRED groups have welcomed two new volunteers to work and pray with adults with developmental disabilities, but more helpers are needed. Assistance is also needed for teaching Citizenship Classes which help teach English and history to immigrants for the interviews and exams they must take in order to become naturalized U.S. Citizens.

All About SPRED / Todo Acerca el Programa de SPRED

SPRED Program: Faith Formation and Inclusion for Children & Adults with Developmental Disabilities
Information Meetings Scheduled at St. Benedict & St. Andrew

SPRED is an agency of the Archdiocese of Chicago which has designed a unique program for people living with various developmental disabilities or learning problems. With the support of the SPRED Agency, a parish welcomes these children and adults into a small faith community where they form friendships with people from the parish who journey with them in faith. SPRED helps each participant to know God and prepare them for full participation in the sacramental life of the parish

Each SPRED community chooses to focus on a particular age grouping in order to respect the chronological age and life experiences of their Friends. They fall into the following categories: 6-10 year old children; 11-16 year old teens; 17-21 year old young people; and adults (22 years and older). A parish is part of an area or deanery effort to assure inclusion in a SPRED program from childhood throughout adulthood.

SPRED Needs Young Adults

CALLING ALL YOUNG ADULTS: A CHANCE FOR PERSONAL FAITH ENRICHMENT
I entered my first SPRED community of faith as a young adult. SPRED was at first attractive to me because it provided a special outreach to children and adults with developmental and learning challenges. I was sensitive to that need. Yet, I was not fully aware of my own personal need to belong to a small intimate community of faith. I was not in tune with my own need for personal faith formation. I didn’t realize then the wonderful gift of finding a place where I could deepen my relationship with God through the bonds of friendship and love which were waiting for me in a SPRED community.

Special Masses May 21 & 22

GERMAN-AMERICAN MASS MAY 21
Join us for a special bilingual German-English bilingual Mass at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 21 in Queen of Angels Church. A German-language Novena to the Mother of Perpetual Help will follow. The organist will be Kent Jager. Leading the singing of the hymns will be the Mixed Chorus of the Society of Danube Swabians of Chicago under the direction of our own Maria Bappert.

JOIN US AT THE SPRED FAMILY MASS ON MAY 22
Next Sunday, May 22 at the 9:30 a.m. Mass, the three SPRED communities of Queen of Angels, along with guests from neighboring SPRED centers, will join with the parish community to celebrate the close of another season with our friends. Simple adaptations to the Mass to honor our friends with disabilities do not add length to the liturgy, but bring richness to the celebration for all of us. Our SPRED friends are delighted to be included in the liturgical celebrations of this parish community.
As a gesture of our gratitude to all, we welcome and encourage everyone to join us in the church hall for an agape, a simple sharing of food and fellowship, following the Mass. This is a great opportunity to meet our friends personally and, perhaps, explore the possibility of joining one of our faith communities. Contact Julie Hess at 773-539-3634 or julia.spredcrw@sbcglobal.net.

SPRED: PETER NEEDS A FRIEND Catechists and friends of the three Queen of Angels SPRED communities are now basking in the joy of our SPRED family mass last weekend. The experience of the welcoming parish community and the memory of the liturgical celebration will enrich our sharing as we gather in coming weeks. A good experience of catechesis is grounded in rich liturgical experience. Our parish and our Pastor make those experiences a wonderful reality for us.
We hope the experience has touched many of you who were present. We hope the joy of our friends has touched your heart and perhaps moved you to consider becoming a participant in this program. One friend in our Thursday evening group is without a partner. Peter has been in SPRED for many years. He is discovering the value of lasting friendships as he lives with a disability that will challenge him for the rest of his life. Peter needs a partner who will show him respect and honor his life experiences. He needs someone who will walk in faith and help him to become more certain that God is with him always in his journey.
Come to the Parish Center one evening to observe what we do as we gather for our SPRED sessions with our friends. You will know right away if this is a program for you. Watch the session through a one-way window. No commitment is necessary until you have had time to see a session, meet some volunteers, meet Peter and pray about it.
We also have groups on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and we are always looking for new volunteers as people’s lives change and commitments end. Please call now to observe a session on March 1, 2 or 3, or March 15, 16, or 17. Please contact Julie Hess at julia.spredcrw@sbcglobal.net or 773-539-3634.

GREEN TEAM SHOUT OUT FOR GREEN AWARD TO CUB SCOUTS Great work, Scouts! The Green Committee wants to give a big shout out to Cub Scout Pack 3894 and their Blue and Gold organizers. The Scouts showed their respect for our planet by switching to cloth tablecloths, buying metal utensils to be used at Pack events, bringing water bottles to use and recycling what they could. They really showed leadership and forward-thinking. We commend their efforts! If you know of another Queen of Angels group deserving a “Green” award, please contact the school.
The next Trash Free Tuesday is March 1. Get ready to go trash free and feel to practice with trash free lunches between now and then.

KNIGHTS KNEWS The Pep Rally and Pack the Gym Nights were very successful. Thanks to all of those who came out and cheered on our Knights. Your support gives a boost of confidence to our student athletes. There are still games left so please make time to come out and see our athletes do their best to represent Queen of Angels. It’s also the perfect time to check out the new gym floor, made possible through the efforts of all who contributed to the 2010 Annual Catholic Appeal with the support of the Athletic Board.

ONE DIME AT A TIME Did you know that each Box Tops coupon is worth a dime to Queen of Angels students? LABELS FOR EDUCATION The Labels for Education program is a great way to earn FREE merchandise for Queen of Angels School, and label collection and redemption is so easy. Participation in the program is simple! Save labels from eligible Campbell products and send them to the school. Let’s amplify our efforts by asking friends and family to collect labels on behalf of our school! Visit www.labelsforeducation.ca for a complete listing of eligible products and more information about the program. You can drop off labels at the school office or at the back of church. Thank you for your ongoing support. For more information, contact Mrs. Ami Allen at aallen@queenofangelschicago.org.

FROM THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges us by saying,” You must be perfected as your heavenly Father is perfect.” When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace and joy into our hearts and into our lives.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR KINDNESS
Dear Blake’s Buddies, Parents, Staff & Parish Community,
My name is Patricia Resendiz. I am a parent at Queen of Angels who feels very blessed to belong to such a united community. I am also blessed for having my own little super-hero named Blake. He is a six-year-old who has been put through one of life’s toughest tests at a young age. It has made him stronger than most kids his age. Blessings and thanks for the generosity which you have demonstrated towards Blake and our family.
God bless you, -- Patricia Resendiz
Editor’s Note: Blake Resendiz is a young parishioner battling cancer. He was the focus of “Blake’s Buddies,” a parish-wide drive initiated by the Commons group. Through those efforts, Blake was able to receive needed items from his Wish List.

¡BIENVENIDOS! ¿Es tu primera vez en nuestra parroquia? ¡Bienvenidos! ¿Se ha mudado recientemente? ¡Que Dios bendiga su nuevo hogar! Por favor visite o contacte la oficina parroquial al 773-539-7510 para registrarse o arreglar su registración actual. ¡Gracias!
