FAMILY-FUN PB & J PARTY! The Commons Community Service Team is holding its first monthly PB & J Party of the year with the after-care students on Wednesday, August 31. You are welcome to join us in making PB&J sandwiches and assembling sack lunches for the homeless and elderly guests of St. Teresa’s Loaves and Fishes Program. We have jobs for toddlers through adults. Kids love pitching in while learning to help others. And what do we do with any leftover sandwiches? Yep, we eat them! This event is in the school cafeteria from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Please direct questions to Donna Czech at 771-271-0377 or donna_czech@yahoo.com; or contact Lisa Krappman at lisa@krappman.com or 773-442-8747.

COLLECTION THROUGH LABOR DAY Needed are travel– and individual-sized toiletries for the Franciscan Outreach Ministry, which runs one of the largest case management programs and shelters for the homeless in Chicago. Larger-sized toiletries are also being collected for Girls and Boys Town, a transitional teen shelter in the Back-of-the-Yards neighborhood. A collection basket is in the Gathering Space at church; donations can also be brought to the Parish Center.

A REFLECTION FROM SSVD... Today we hear Jesus say to us, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” The challenge is to let go so God can lead us. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent dePaul enabled the poor to experience Jesus’ presence by assisting 11 families by providing furniture, special shoes and baby items, $1,050 for housing bills and referrals to needed services. With your help this month, we provided school supplies and backpacks to dozens of children at the start of the school year.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL BOX GONE For many years there has been a St. Vincent DePaul donation box in the parish parking lot. Due to recent problems, the box has been removed. An alternative way for parishioners to help meet the needs of the poor is being considered by the Queen of Angels Conference of the Society of St. Vincent dePaul. Please be respectful of this decision and do not leave anything in the parking lot. Until this situation is resolved, please take your donations elsewhere.

FIRST TARGET, NOW WHOLE FOODS! Whole Foods has joined the Shop With the Angels lineup. For a variety of retail gift cards, stop by the Shop With The Angels table before or after the 8 and 9:30 Masses on Sunday or call the Parish Center at 773-539-7510. Whole Foods cards are available in $25 and $100 denominations.

NICODEMUS MINISTRY When a parishioner dies, the priest celebrates the Mass of Christian Burial. The final Prayers of Commendation at the cemetery are led by a lay person. It is a sign that when a parishioner dies, other members of the parish -— and not just the priest —- pray. Volunteers are needed to minister to grieving families. Follow the kindness of Nicodemus who, with Joseph of Arimathea, buried Jesus.

GALA OF THE ARTS PLANNED The 10th Annual Gala of the Arts will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, September 9 in the Grand Ballroom of Navy Pier. The recent stars of Chicago’s Jersey Boys will perform. The evening features an art show and sale, featuring 16 artists. A portion of the proceeds raised at the Gala will support Catholic Charities’ Emergency Assistance Programs which provide food, shelter, clothing and short-term financial assistance. Reservations begin at $250. Contact Ashley Owen at 312-655-7912.

SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEK
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Although Latin America is home to the largest number of Catholics in the world, the Church is experiencing an alarming decline in membership, for a variety of complex reasons. The unstable global economy has played a part, as has a low priest-to-parishioner ratio that makes it difficult to teach the faith and make the sacraments available in a consistent matter. Additionally, migration across the region has ruptured the bonds of family and community in which the Catholic faith is supported and passed down from generation to generation.
This year’s Collection for the Church in Latin America will be directed towards a comprehensive evangelization effort, as well as towards the formation of seminarians, catechists, and lay ministers in more than 200 dioceses. So many are attuned to alleviating material poverty, which is of course necessary and a part of the Church’s efforts anywhere she is present. However, as Mother Teresa once pointed out, life without God is a much greater poverty than any material deprivation.
Through your generous support of this collection, you will help the Church to rebuild her strong presence in Latin America. Your contribution will ensure that millions of people can come to experience the Lord’s love in the sacraments and in strong local parish communities.
I am grateful for all you do to support your local parish, as well as the Church in other parts of the world. May God, who is never outdone in generosity, bless you and your loved ones in this New Year.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
-- Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago

-- Cardenal Francis George, O.M.I., Arzobispo de Chicago

MASS FOR KATHY COLE On November 22, 2009, SPRED friend and Queen of Angels parishioner Kathy Cole passed away. Her life will be celebrated at the 9 a.m. Mass Saturday, January 16, 2010.
Perhaps you were unable to attend the funeral or did not hear of her passing. Perhaps you were present at the funeral but welcome another opportunity to share the beauty of Kathy’s life. Whatever the reason, please attend this memorial Mass for our friend, Kathy Cole.

A PRAYER FOR OUR PRIESTS As the Church celebrates the Year of the Priest through June 19, 2010, let us pause during the week to give thanks and remember Fr. Jim Kaczorowski and Fr. John Griffiths for all they do to make God alive at Queen of Angels Parish.
Almighty God, in your love
You bless your Church with priests,
A sign of your faithfulness to your people.
May our prayerful encouragement,
During this year and years to come,
Help them remain faithful to the calling
They have received from you.
As they tend your flock, grant them a caring heart.
In them may we know the voice of Christ,
Our Good Shepherd, who lives and reigns
With you and the Holy Spirit,
One God forever and ever. Amen.

SHOP WITH THE ANGELS Stop by the Parish Center during the week or visit one of the Shop with the Angels representatives in the Gathering Space after the 8 and 9:30 a.m. Masses each Sunday. Queen of Angels can simplify your shopping with Shop with the Angels. Jewel, Dominick’s, Starbucks, Panera, Mobil, BP and Shell gift cards will be in stock. Order forms are available for other purchases. You determine where your profits go: to the parish, Lyman Fund or a school tuition account. Thanks for your support of this winning fundraiser.

MASS INTENTIONS Intentions may be placed for Sunday, weekday, holy day or holiday Masses in 2010. They may be offered in the name of friends or relatives, living or deceased, for those in need of extra prayers or in honor of a beloved saint. Dates special to your loved ones are great times to remember them in the prayers of the Mass. Suggested donation is $10. Call 773-539-7510.

FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Every Friday, the Blessed Sacrament is placed out for veneration and prayer from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. To reach the Adoration Chapel, enter the church through the Claremont door, walk up the stairs, turn to the left and then to the left again. Walk down the passage behind the altar and enter the former baptistery where the Eucharist is exposed for veneration. Bring your thoughts and your bible, rosary, and books, or use the prayer resources in the adoration chapel. Spend some time with Jesus in the form of the Blessed Sacrament.
This is an excellent way to build special devotions into your week. Visitors are asked to register their attendance in the sign-in book in the chapel when attending Adoration. You may sign up for a particular hour of prayer every week. At some time during the day, before or after work, while out running errands, stop by the chapel for some quiet time with the Lord. Help us keep vigil with the Lord by making time on Fridays for these beautiful moments of prayer. Call Christine Murphy at 773-561-9072.

DO YOU FEEL CALLED TO THE DEACON FORMATION PROGRAM? A deacon is a man called by God to a ministry of service. With bishops and priests, the deacon receives the Sacrament of Holy Orders. He is an ordained minister, who may be married and have children. He is living in the lifestyle of the laity. Permanent Deacons are called to a three-fold ministry of service — of the Word, Charity and Justice and to live out their life in service to Jesus and their brothers and sisters in Christ. Do you believe Jesus may be inviting you to inquire about this ordained ministry? If so, your first step is having a heart-to-heart conversation with your family and Fr. Jim. Review the website at www.usml.edu (select Ministry Formation, then Deacon Formation). Contact Deacon Jim Cozzo, Jr. at 847-837-4563 or at jcozzo@usml.edu and request a pre-application form. Deacon Formation Program of the Archdiocese of Chicago meets at the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO REGISTER FOR CHILDREN’S RELIGIOUS ED Children not attending a Catholic school may be registered for Sunday Morning Religious Education Classes (Kindergarten through Level 7) and Confirmation Preparation (eighth grade through high school). While sacramental preparation is a part of this program, it is not designed for sacrament preparation only. Classes are structured to help children learn and grow in their faith during each successive year.
Sunday morning classes begin next Sunday, September 13, at 10:45 a.m. in the school. Next week there will be an important meeting for parents of Confirmation candidates. In order to ensure that your child does not miss any classes or information, it is important to register before classes begin.
Registration for either program can be completed during normal business hours at the parish office or by calling the Religious Education office at 773-769-4986, ext. 23.

RCIA—AN INVITATION TO COME AND SEE! RCIA stands for Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. It is an opportunity for those who have never been baptized, or baptized with little or no affiliation or religious training in the Catholic religion, to learn and ask questions about the Catholic faith. This includes those who may have been baptized Catholic, but have not yet received their First Communion or Confirmation. Sometimes after the information meetings, prayer and reflection, participants choose to begin the process for becoming Catholic or coming into full Communion. It is important to note, however, that no commitment is expected of participants at this time.
Sometimes those of us who have been Catholic our whole lives forget to offer this invitation to others interested in becoming Catholic. We just assume that if they are interested, they will find their own way. Sharing with others, in a gentle way, the information about RCIA may be just what some of our relatives, friends and neighbors would welcome. They may be waiting for just such an opportunity or invitation.
RCIA sessions will begin September 22 and will meet on Tuesday evenings. Please call the Parish Center at 773-539-7510 and leave your name and number. We will contact you with further information.

RACHEL’S VINEYARDS RETREATS Rachel’s Vineyard is a weekend retreat program that offers healing to any woman or man who has struggled with the emotional or spiritual pain of abortion. The retreat is a chance to get away  from the daily pressures of work and family, to focus on a painful time in life and to begin healing.
Many experience an initial sense of relief after an abortion. Later, however, emotional problems can surface that may include depression, anger, flashbacks, emptiness, anxiety and unresolved grief. The retreat provides an opportunity to release repressed feelings in a non-judgmental atmosphere.
The next retreat program will be October 2 to 4 at the Fullerton Cenacle, 513 W. Fullerton in Chicago. Fee is $150. Contact Catherine Rennert at 815-968-1157 or cathy.rennert@gmail.com.

“100 Years of Faith”

BUILDING ON 100 YEARS OF SHARING AND CARING
For some years now it has been a distinct honor for me to, from time to time, come up to the pulpit during the 11 a.m. Mass and either read the Word of God, or pray the general intercessions with the congregation. And many times as I’ve stood up there and looked out over our church, I’ve been struck by the incredible history of faith contained within those walls.
