"Care and Compassion"

SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEK
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Although Latin America is home to the largest number of Catholics in the world, the Church is experiencing an alarming decline in membership, for a variety of complex reasons. The unstable global economy has played a part, as has a low priest-to-parishioner ratio that makes it difficult to teach the faith and make the sacraments available in a consistent matter. Additionally, migration across the region has ruptured the bonds of family and community in which the Catholic faith is supported and passed down from generation to generation.
This year’s Collection for the Church in Latin America will be directed towards a comprehensive evangelization effort, as well as towards the formation of seminarians, catechists, and lay ministers in more than 200 dioceses. So many are attuned to alleviating material poverty, which is of course necessary and a part of the Church’s efforts anywhere she is present. However, as Mother Teresa once pointed out, life without God is a much greater poverty than any material deprivation.
Through your generous support of this collection, you will help the Church to rebuild her strong presence in Latin America. Your contribution will ensure that millions of people can come to experience the Lord’s love in the sacraments and in strong local parish communities.
I am grateful for all you do to support your local parish, as well as the Church in other parts of the world. May God, who is never outdone in generosity, bless you and your loved ones in this New Year.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
-- Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago

-- Cardenal Francis George, O.M.I., Arzobispo de Chicago

MASS FOR KATHY COLE On November 22, 2009, SPRED friend and Queen of Angels parishioner Kathy Cole passed away. Her life will be celebrated at the 9 a.m. Mass Saturday, January 16, 2010.
Perhaps you were unable to attend the funeral or did not hear of her passing. Perhaps you were present at the funeral but welcome another opportunity to share the beauty of Kathy’s life. Whatever the reason, please attend this memorial Mass for our friend, Kathy Cole.

A PRAYER FOR OUR PRIESTS As the Church celebrates the Year of the Priest through June 19, 2010, let us pause during the week to give thanks and remember Fr. Jim Kaczorowski and Fr. John Griffiths for all they do to make God alive at Queen of Angels Parish.
Almighty God, in your love
You bless your Church with priests,
A sign of your faithfulness to your people.
May our prayerful encouragement,
During this year and years to come,
Help them remain faithful to the calling
They have received from you.
As they tend your flock, grant them a caring heart.
In them may we know the voice of Christ,
Our Good Shepherd, who lives and reigns
With you and the Holy Spirit,
One God forever and ever. Amen.

CATHOLICS COME HOME If you’ve been away from the Church, we welcome you and invite you to take a look at all our parish has to offer. See our representative in church at all the weekend Masses or call 773-539-7510. Welcome home!

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Are you willing to set aside time for a worthwhile evening? In SPRED, adult friends with developmental disabilities are partnered with a volunteer catechist. When we meet with our friends we provide a place of peace to help them discover a sense of personal dignity and develop a spirit of prayer. We spend some time working on activities which settle us and help us to focus on the present. We then retire to the Holy Room, our mini chapel, where we share life stories; listen to the Word of Our Lord; sing and enjoy calming music; and share joyfully in the restful silence. We close our session with a simple sharing of food and fellowship – called Agape. We talk and laugh and enjoy the companionship of each other.
Sessions have a calming and renewing influence on all of us as they deepen our awareness of God’s presence and love in our lives. This wonderful opportunity is offered only 24 evenings a year. You will be delighted with what we have to offer for you as you give yourself to one of our very special friends.
To find out more about SPRED, call Joann Salas at 773-583-1371 or Julia Hess in the SPRED office at 773-539-3634. Thank you so much.
—- Mary Murray, a most satisfied volunteer catechist

FUND TO HELP FAMILIES IN NEED Once a month, the collection includes the regular weekly offering and the monthly Lyman Scholarship Fund. The Lyman Scholarship Fund was established to help families in need of assistance in making a tuition payment. And the school is a very important part of our parish’s mission.
Contributing to the scholarship fund in someone’s name is a wonderful way to remember a loved one. Your generosity will help continue the mission of Queen of Angels in providing a quality Catholic education.
A record number of families benefited from the Lyman Fund last school year, depleting the fund. And an even larger number of families this year are seeking assistance. Your help is needed to make sure no child is denied an education at Queen of Angels School.
Please be as generous as you can. Use the green envelope provided in your envelope pack or simply place your donation in an envelope marked “Lyman Fund.” The Lyman collection is generally the first Sunday of the month but donations are accepted at any time. Helping a family in need ensures the future of our church. The Lyman Scholarship Fund collection will be next Sunday, January 3.
Thank you for your generosity and sacrifice.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD The 9:30 Sunday liturgies offer an opportunity for children to hear the readings and prayers of the Mass in words that are familiar to them. The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is designed for children ages 3 through early primary grades. Young children and their catechists have a great time together sharing prayer and reflection on the Sunday readings. The experience created at the Children’s Liturgy parallels that of all the faithful worshipping at Mass each week. Children are blessed by the priest before the First Reading, walk together downstairs to the Children’s Liturgy chapel space, and return upstairs to their families later in the Mass. The reunion of families in time for the consecration and Communion is a sign of the union of the Church in this holy sacrament. Volunteers are needed for this ministry. Training and materials are provided. Please consider this opportunity to guide our young ones. For more information, or to volunteer, contact Albert Ferolie at 773-283-9428.

A CHANCE TO WELOME THOSE WHO HAVE DRIFTED AWAY Perhaps you have heard of the massive outreach to Catholics who have drifted away from the Church. The Archdiocese of Chicago along with the Diocese of Rockford and the Diocese of Joliet are undertaking an evangelization initiative – Catholics Come Home – that invites our sisters and brothers back to the practice of the faith.
This evangelization initiative began this week and will continue through the end of January. Over 2,000 television ads will air on the major area networks in English, Spanish and Polish. These ads encourage those who have drifted away to come back home.
There are 20 million Catholics in the USA who no longer practice the faith or do so sporadically. This is in addition to the 70 million Catholics who are more active. In fact, if one takes the number of those who have drifted away, it adds to the second largest religion in the USA, practicing Catholics being the first. Amazing, isn’t it, that so many have drifted away? We need to invite our brothers and sisters to join us!
The ads airing on television are the first step – inviting – in this evangelization initiative. The other two overlapping steps are welcoming and accompanying. The site www.CatholicsComeHomeCHICAGO.org will help you with additional information.
While ads might help, nothing is more effective than a personal invitation. Invite someone you know to come back home to the Catholic Church. And to anyone reading this bulletin article that is returning to the Church this Christmas season, welcome! Check out the website!

¡Necesitamos invitar a nuestros hermanos y hermanas a unirse a nosotros!

CHOIR CD AVAILABLE The new Christmas CD, O Magnum Mysterium, featuring the Queen of Angels choirs, can be purchased after all Masses this weekend. The CD features favorite carols and choir anthems of the Christmas Season. The cost is $20. This is a wonderful Christmas gift and proceeds support the Music Ministry at Queen of Angels.

SUNG VESPERS ADVENT SERVICE
5:30 p.m. Sunday, December 13
Featuring John Rutter’s Dancing Day
Elizabeth said to Mary: Blessed are you because you have believed!
“You also are blessed because you have heard and believed. A soul that believes both conceives and brings forth the Word of God... Let her spirit be in each [of us] to rejoice in the Lord. Christ has only one mother in the flesh, but we all bring forth Christ in faith.” -- Saint Ambrose of Milan
“Therefore, Advent is... the time of hope, in which believers in Christ are invited to remain in vigilant and active expectation, nourished by prayer and by a concrete commitment of love.” -- Pope Benedict XVI
Come and be nourished by prayer this Advent with the choirs of Queen of Angels, our pastor, friends and fellow parishioners through an evening of reflection as we joyfully await the coming of our Lord, Jesus. A festive fellowship reception will follow.
Childcare will be provided but it is necessary to contact the Parish Center at 773-539-7510 or parish@queenofangelschicago.org to make reservations for the number and ages of children.

GREAT THINGS AT SCHOOL
There are great things happening at Queen of Angels School. This recent letter from Joan Franklin Smutny of National-Louis University provides affirmation of the strides being made in gifted education.
Dear Mrs. Kelly,
Thank you for the opportunity to bring gifted to Queen of Angels. May I share with you a few insights about your school? Queen of Angels is an extraordinary place for students, teachers and staff. Your leadership has effected an academic excellence and creativity that pervade the school. I have delighted in my association as I continue to bring activities and materials to the teachers and students.
Queen of Angels clearly expresses an excellence in the classroom and in the kinds of challenges given to students. It offers a distinct vision for advancing and enhancing all the children. They are highly motivated to succeed and so are the teachers.
May I especially thank you for initiating and implementing a quality of thought and atmosphere that is so consistently affirmative. Children and young people thrive in a milieu that enables them to move forward positively as individuals and as learners.
Creativity is the highest form of mental functioning. Queen of Angels embodies and imparts that quality. Creativity is inherent in meeting perceptively the needs of bright, talented children and all children. It is my privilege to be supportive of your school’s forward steps in effecting this result.
Very sincerely, -- Joan Franklin Smutny, Director of the Center for Gifted, National-Louis University

We close our session with a simple sharing of food and fellowship -- called Agape.
To find out more about SPRED, call Joann Salas at 773- 583-1371 or Julia Hess at the SPRED Office, 773-539-3634. Thank you so much, -- Mary Murray, a most satisfied volunteer catechist

RELIGIOUS RETIREMENT COLLECTION
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The annual Retirement Fund for Religious Appeal has provided much needed assistance to women and men religious who have spent their lives serving our church and our world. They ministered in our schools, hospitals, parishes and charitable agencies, asking for little in return. They invested, not in pension plans, but in people, in service and in the future of the Church they served.
The people of the Archdiocese of Chicago have always responded very generously to this yearly appeal, contributing over $1 million last year alone. In these challenging economic times, I ask you to simply give what you can. I am very proud of your willingness to share in the care of our aging women and men religious.
I thank you for your support of this appeal and ask you to keep our religious sisters, brothers and priests in your thoughts and in your prayers. In our often troubled world, they remain a visible sign of Christ’s love. During this Advent season, when we prepare for the birth of Christ, I ask you to remember the love of those who taught us all about our Catholic faith: the men and women religious who served our Archdiocese.
May God bless you and your loved ones.
Sincerely yours in Christ,  -- Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago

The next Lyman Scholarship Fund collection will be next Sunday, December 6.
Thank you for your generosity and sacrifice.

SUNG VESPERS ADVENT SERVICE
Featuring John Rutter’s Dancing Day
“In her concern for our salvation, our loving mother the Church uses this holy season of Advent to teach us through hymns, canticles and other forms of expression, of voice or ritual, used by the Holy Spirit. She shows us how grateful we should be for so great a blessing, and how to gain its benefit: our hearts should be as much prepared for the coming of Christ as if he were still to come into this world. The same lesson is given us for our imitation by the words and example of the holy men of the Old Testament.” — St. Charles Borromeo
From ancient times the Church has had the custom of celebrating each day the Liturgy of the Hours. Vespers is the great and important prayer of the evening. Come join the choirs of Queen of Angels at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, December 13 for this rich and sacred form of prayer as we anticipate together the coming of our Lord, Jesus. A fellowship reception will follow. Childcare will be provided.
