THE YEAR OF SUNDAY MASS: Question of the Week
Faith professed must also be faith lived. During this Year of Sunday Mass, Question of the Week provides a guide for believers in developing that realization and in putting their faith to work. Based on the readings we hear at Sunday Mass, the questions serve as the spark for a discussion of faith at home, at parish meetings, in the classroom or as a personal reflection.
“While it was still dark...”
By sharing in the Eucharist, how do
I bring Christ’s ‘light’ to the world?

"Why do you seek the Living One among the dead?"

CHECK OUT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Registration opens soon for Religious Education (CCD) classes. Families are invited to plan now for classes beginning in September. Classes are intended for children who are not attending a Catholic school, and they are available to children as young as Kindergarten. Sacramental preparation, such as for First Communion or Confirmation, forms a part of Religious Education, but there is so much more to learn during a child’s elementary school years. It is important for all children to have the chance to develop their faith and receive the sacraments as signs of God’s grace. To learn more, please call the Religious Education Office at 773-769-4986 ext. 15.

SSVD REFLECTION... Today as we celebrate the feast of Easter we find the challenge of also seeing and believing the resurrection that comes through our own lives of self-sacrifice which brings new life to others. In the month of March, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent DePaul was able to help the poor celebrate the joy of Easter, by assisting families through the Lenten Food Drive and providing assistance with winter clothing and utility bills. Thank you!

Q OF A SCIENTISTS SOAR! Congratulations to our middle school students who attended the IJAS Regional Non-Public Schools Science Fair at the Museum of Science and Industry on March 9. These Queen of Angels School students and their parents invested time and energy to represent our school in an event that emphasizes the importance of science and science education in our community. These investigators placed better than any group sent in the past 12 years by securing five Gold and three Silver medals.
-- Gold Medalists: Anna Borelli, Jonathan Dugard, Eddie McCarthy, Ian McKitterick and Alex Milne.
-- Silver Medalists: Greta Fieweger, Aoife O’Brien and Kyra Sadovi.
In addition, Kyra won a Special Award from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago for her project on lead in soil. Hearty congratulations and appreciation are extended to these scientific investigators! Keep it up!

HELP SCHOLARS WITH LYMAN FUND A growing number of families need assistance from the Lyman Scholarship Fund. Please help. Use the green envelope provided in each bimonthly envelope packet, or simply write “Lyman Fund” on an envelope and drop it in the collection so no child is denied a Catholic education. You can give to the Lyman Fund online! Visit parish.queenofangelschicago.org/give-central/.

BAKING OUR WAY TO SUCCESS All proceeds from the Third Grade Bake Sale will be donated to Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy. This charity provides service dogs to people, especially children, who are ill or have special needs. The dogs help the children improve health, develop skills and provide a focus on comfort rather than the child’s illness. They even visited parishioner Blake Resendiz in the hospital. Thanks to parents, students and parishioners for making the delicious baked goods, visiting the bake sale and for making it such an overwhelming success. Your efforts helped us collect more than $650!

BOX TOP CHALLENGE UNDERWAY Please send in your Box Tops coupons and remind family and friends to do so. There are two contests this spring. 1) The Classroom Buddy Challenge teams younger classrooms with their older buddies. The top three groups will win pizza parties and books for their classrooms. 2) If the entire school collects more than 6,000 Box Tops, everyone gets a movie afternoon in May.

REST IN THE DIVINE PRESENCE Every Friday, the Blessed Sacrament is placed out for veneration and prayer from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. To reach the Adoration Chapel, enter the church through the Claremont door, walk up the stairs, turn to the left and then to the left again. Walk down the passage behind the altar and enter the former baptistery where the Eucharist is exposed for veneration. Help us keep vigil with the Lord by making time for these moments of prayer; you’ll feel closer to God by resting in the divine presence. Please sign the book when you enter. Call 773-539-7510.

¡Aleluya, aleluya!

Announcements, Week of March 11, 2012

SSVD REFLECTS... In today’s Gospel Jesus is asked, “What sign can you show us?” Every day we can see signs of how God has visited us in the blessings of our lives. Let us be a sign of God’s love by being a blessing to others. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Parish Center and leave a message for the Society of St. Vincent dePaul so that together we can help the suffering.

LOOKING TO BOARD ELECTIONS If you are interested in running for a board position on either the Athletic, Commons or School Board, the time is now to mark your calendar to attend one meeting in March or April to fulfill that eligibility requirement.
-- The Athletic Board will be seeking five candidates to fill four 3-year terms and one 1-year term.
-- The School Board will have four openings, all for three-year terms.
-- Commons will seek to fill the Vice President and Treasurer positions.
Meeting dates and times are posted on the school website. Please give thoughtful consideration to volunteering your time and talents to one of these essential boards.

NORTH SIDE KAIROS SEEKS LEADERS North Side Kairos 13 is currently looking for high school or first year college students for their leadership team. Applicants must:
-- have already attended a Kairos retreat, such as through a Catholic high school or at a parish;
-- be open to lead as part of a diverse team of youth and adults for this co-ed, multi-parish experience; and
-- complete a leader application and return it to the retreat coordinators by the extended deadline, Saturday, March 31, 2012.
Chosen leaders will receive thorough leadership training in the late spring and summer to prepare them for the peer-to-peer retreat. This is a great opportunity for teens to grow in faith, develop communication skills and gain experience in leading others.
The retreat will take place August 10-13 at Bellarmine Hall in Barrington. North Side Kairos is a joint effort of youth and adults at several north side and suburban parishes, including Queen of Angels.
To receive an application or learn more, visit parish.queenofangelschicago.org/kairos or e-mail your request to northside.kairos@gmail.com.

SUPPORT OUR STUDENT ATHLETES The Athletic Board is looking for people with knowledge of volleyball to coach both our fifth grade girls team and sixth grade boys team. Coaches must hold two practices a week and attend all games. Please contact Nancy at nbaer@att.net if you are interested.

HELP THE LYMAN FUND Your donation to the Lyman Scholarship Fund goes a long way in continuing the mission of our parish and our school: no child is denied a Catholic education because of a cash shortfall in the family. A growing number of families need assistance from the Lyman Fund.
Please help. Use the green envelope provided or simply write “Lyman Fund” on an envelope. Your donation is always welcome.

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak... They will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” — Isaiah 40:29, 31

SSVD REFLECTS... In today’s Gospel Jesus says, “...your sins are forgiven.” Indeed forgiving is a divine act of mercy. When we forgive others we are acting in and by God’s power. When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace and forgiveness into our hearts and into our lives.

SHARE OUR AMERICAN FREEDOMS In 2010, a total of 619,913 people who came to this country as immigrants swore the oath of allegiance and became U.S. Citizens. Requirements in this process include multiple applications, interviews and tests, in order to ensure that naturalized citizens have familiarity with American government and history, a working knowledge of the English language and good moral character.
The road to citizenship can be long and difficult. At Queen of Angels, a ministry exists to help our brothers and sisters who have begun this process and are studying for the interviews and examinations. Help is needed to lead these classes, which are offered free of charge as a service to the community.
Volunteers must be patient, caring and able to keep up on current events and changes in immigration regulations. Internet access, teaching skills, or competence in a foreign language can be helpful but are not necessary. Most important is a love of the United States and the freedoms that we enjoy, including the freedom to adopt this country as one’s own. Training is available from Deacon Ben Nieves, who has taught the class for 14 years. U.S. Citizenship Classes are held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday evenings at the Parish Center. For more information, to volunteer or sign up for the class, please call the parish office at 773-539-7510.

HELP YOURSELF TO MARKET DAY Market Day provides restaurant quality results and helps Queen of Angels School, too! Pick up a Market Day order form in church or school or visit www.marketday.com to see more than 200 quality food items. Market Day has healthy snacks, quick entrees, and a long line of convenience foods. Market Day has been a long-time presence at Queen of Angels for a reason: the items are high quality and the profits go directly to the school. This is a great way to help Queen of Angels School with very little effort. Online Market Day orders are due by 11 p.m. Wednesday, February 22. Pick-up will be 9:15 a.m. Saturday, February 25 in the Lower Voss Center. If you would like to help, call Nancy at 773-539-7510.
