Ten Reasons to Come Home to the Catholic Church

No matter how long you have been away from the Catholic Church, you can always come home. You can start going to Mass again (find a parish) and become a part of a parish community that is ready to welcome you with open arms. God is inviting you to dive into your faith in a deeper way than you ever have before.

You may already be feeling a strange inner pull to look into the Church again. That spiritual longing you feel is God drawing you back to Himself. God never forces; He only invites. He leaves the decision to return to the Catholic Church up to you.

There are numerous reasons for coming back to the Church. Though Christ is at the heart of the many reasons to come home to the Church, each individual’s experience in returning can be unique, depending upon whatever speaks to his or her heart.

Here are ten reasons (by Lorene Hanley Duqin of Our Sunday Visitor, www.osv.com, and edited by Catholics Come Home) that influenced the decision of many of us to return to the practice of the Catholic faith:

10. Because we want meaning in life.
9. Because childhood memories surface.
8. Because we made mistakes.
7. Because we need to forgive others.
6. Because we want to be healed.
5. Because the Catholic Church has the fullness of truth and grace.
4. Because we want our children to have a faith foundation.
3. Because we want to be part of a faith community.
2. Because we want to help other people.
1. Because we hunger for the Eucharist.

Pray for our Priests this Week

As part of their apostleship of prayer, the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women pray for specific priests on a given day each year. Let us join with them to pray for Fr. Jim Kaczorowski on Tuesday, February 23 and for Fr. John Griffiths on Thursday, February 25.

In this Year of the Priest, let us continue to hold them in our thoughts and prayers, thanking God for all the good they do in leading us closer to Christ in their work at our parish.

Order deadline is noon, Wednesday, February 24 on the internet. Pick-up is 9:15 a.m. Saturday, February 27 at the Guild Hall Gym. Call Nancy at 773-539-7510.

DONATION STATEMENTS AVAILABLE If you are preparing your 2009 Income Taxes and would like to receive a statement of your tax-deductible gifts to Queen of Angels in 2009, please contact the parish office at 773-539-7510 or parish@queenofangelschicago.org. Thank you for your support of our parish during our 100 Years of Sharing and Caring!

BOX TOPS, LABELS FOR EDUCATION Please collect General Mills Box Tops for Education and Campbell’s Labels for Education. Use the labeled box at school or put in the collection at church. These are used in a redemption program for additional school supplies. Thank you for your support!

FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Every Friday, the Blessed Sacrament is placed out for veneration and prayer from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. To reach the Adoration Chapel, enter the church through the Claremont door, walk up the stairs, turn to the left and then to the left again. Walk down the passage behind the altar and enter the former baptistery where the Eucharist is exposed for veneration.
At some time during this Lenten season, during the day, stop by the chapel for some quiet time with Jesus. Help us keep vigil with the Lord by making time on Fridays for these beautiful moments of prayer.
Bring your thoughts and your bible, rosary, and books, or use the prayer resources in the adoration chapel. Spend some time with Jesus in the form of the Blessed Sacrament. Visitors are asked to register attendance in the sign-in book in the chapel when attending Adoration. You may sign up for a particular hour of prayer every week. Call Christine Murphy at 773-561-9072.

SHOP WITH THE ANGELS Stop by the Parish Center during the week or visit one of the Shop with the Angels representatives in the Gathering Space after the 8 and 9:30 a.m. Masses each Sunday. Simplify your shopping with Shop with the Angels. Jewel, Dominick’s, Starbucks, Panera, Mobil, BP and Shell gift cards will be in stock. Order forms are available for other purchases. You determine where your profits go: to the parish, Lyman Fund or a school tuition account. Thanks for your support of this winning fundraiser.

NICODEMUS MINISTRY When a parishioner dies, the priest celebrates the Mass of Christian Burial. The final Prayers of Commendation at the cemetery are led by a lay person. Laity are urged to lead their brothers and sisters in prayer. It is a sign that when a parishioner dies, other members of the parish—and not just the priest—pray. Volunteers are needed to minister to grieving families. Follow the kindness of Nicodemus who, with Joseph of Arimathea, buried Jesus. Training is provided. Call 773-539-7510.

ALL ARE WELCOME Are you new to our parish community? Welcome! Have you recently moved? May God bless your new home! Please visit or contact the parish office at 773-539-7510 to register or adjust your registration. Thank you!

SATURDAY ROSARY Join us to pray the Rosary after each 9 a.m. Saturday Mass. To volunteer to lead the Rosary, contact Joann at 773-583-1371 or green3256@yahoo.com.

MEN’S CLUB HOOPS CONTINUE ON THURSDAYS Men of the parish are invited to the weekly session of Men’s Club Hoops at 9 p.m. Thursdays in the Guild Hall Gym. Donation is $10 weekly plus an annual Men’s Club membership of $15. Join a bunch of 30-, 40-, 50- and 60-year-olds trying to make it up and down the court for a couple hours each week. A liability waiver must be signed prior to lacing up the sneakers. Concessions are served immediately after the grueling play, along with lively discussions around our 62” HDTV!
Men’s Club also meets on the second Thursday of each month at 8 p.m. in the Voss Center. Join us for pizza and beer. There is a $5 donation per meeting. Men’s Club Hoops follows each meeting. Men’s Club events include the Fall Golf Outing, Family Gym Nights, high school scholarship funding, gym improvements, Membership Dinner and St. Paddy’s Day Poker Party. Call Pat McQuillan at 773-575-4483.

MASS INTENTIONS Intentions may be placed for Sunday, weekday, holy day or holiday Masses in 2010. They may be offered in the name of friends or relatives, living or deceased, for those in need of extra prayers or in honor of a beloved saint. Suggested donation is $10. Call 773-539-7510.

Consider Winter Toast
The cost of a Winter Toast ticket has made some people seriously consider where their event dollar is going. Ninety percent of the money raised goes to support the well-being of the school, expanding curriculum and improving the overall academic experience. This is the largest Queen of Angels fundraiser and proceeds are thoughtfully used to pump up the excellence of the school. The remaining 10 percent of money raised benefits programs for the entire parish community, including all our children.

The event promises to be a great evening, with a silent auction boasting the return of Mamarita for
ladies and a Poker Party for the guys as well as luxury items for couples and families. Plan on a gourmet
buffet dinner from Piazza Bella, wine and microbrew tastings and lots of new lots in the live auction
including weekends in Miami, and a stay at the Punta Mita Four Seasons Resort.

But most of all, remember, it’s not just what you get for your entrance price. It’s what the school children
get, too. It may be a lot of money for a ticket but the parish and school are worth it.

This is Your Last Chance to Help Winter Toast
It’s now or never for this year’s Winter Toast. Make the biggest fundraiser of the year even better by offering your time and your God-given gifts as a volunteer. Fulfill school service hours or work from the kindness of your heart.
-- Errand runners will be used a lot the day before and/or of Winter Toast.
-- Set-up requires moving things, carrying things, hanging things, etc.
-- Friendly people are needed as Greeters.
-- Ticket sales are in the back of church and at the event controlling the rolls of drink tickets and raffle tickets.
-- Check-out includes checking out bidders who buy auction items. The position includes on-the-job training.
-- Clean-up takes place during or after the event.
-- Auction spotters, recorders and runners. Help the auctioneer identify and record bidders during the auction.
-- General help. There is a lot to be done between now and Saturday. Offer some of your valuable time and we’ll figure a way to use it.
Contact Jennifer Payne at pwjjp@sbcglobal.net or at 773-279-1140. Many are called. All are chosen. We need a lot of help.

We are also looking for donations of your favorite bottle of wine for the “instant wine cellar” auction item at the February 20 wine auction. The goal is to have 100 bottles of wine for the auction item—and we still need 60 bottles to reach that goal! Parishioners are asked to donate one (or more) bottles of wine. All types of wine are welcome and donations can be dropped off at the school office. Please bring your donation in as soon as possible. If you have questions, please contact Eileen Moran at eileenmoran67@hotmail.com or KJ Bradley at kjbrad@sbcglobal.net. Thank you for your support.
