SSVD NEEDS BOYS’ CLOTHES The Society of St. Vincent DePaul is looking for winter clothes for a 10-year-old boy. He wears size 14-16 boys in coats and size 4.5-5 in boots. If you have used winter clothes in these sizes, please bring them to the parish office during the week or to the church gathering space after Mass. If you have other clothing items you would like to donate, the clothing box for the Society of St. Vincent dePaul has been moved to the St. Matthias Parish parking lot, located at 4934 N. Claremont.

THANK YOU FROM LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR
On behalf of our family of Little Sisters and Residents, thank you for the opportunity to visit your parish last summer and for the gift of $2,255.03 made possible by the generosity of Queen of Angels parishioners. Your generosity enables us to continue our mission of caring for the elderly poor.
On October 11 we marked our two-year anniversary of the Canonization of our Mother Foundress, St. Jeanne Jugan. This wonderful honor, recognized throughout the world, gives us a renewed passion for continuing the important work of St. Jeanne Jugan. The Little Sisters of the Poor have continued her tradition of opening their homes to the elderly poor, treating each person with respect and dignity, and providing a home filled with care and love until the Lord himself calls them home. Strengthened by our faith, we are assured the Lord will provide for the needs of those he confides to our care.
Thank you for your help in continuing the work of St. Jeanne Jugan. It is a privilege for each of us because as she said, “ In caring for the elderly poor, we care for Jesus.”
Sincerely in Christ, — Sr. Patricia Mary, Little Sisters of the Poor

KICKS FOR RAMS Let’s hear it for Seamus McDonagh, one of eight Gordon Tech Rams football players recognized as all-conference selections. In addition, Julian Leon was named an all-conference selection for soccer, also representing Gordon Tech. These gentlemen are continuing the outstanding athletic careers they began at Queen of Angels School.

IT’S BOWLING SEASON! The Ravenswood Catholic Young Adults (RCYA) will be bowling on Monday evenings beginning November 7 through the end of February at Lincoln Square Lanes, 4874 N. Lincoln Ave. (above the hardware store). Lincoln Square Lanes has agreed to host the group for a mere $4.50 per game per person and $4 per person for shoe rental. Bowling will be every Monday beginning at 7:30 p.m. through the end of February. All skill levels are invited. This is a great way to meet fellow parishioners and strengthen ties with the community. For more information, please contact Leah Bertke at lbert@alumni.nd.edu or Tracy O’Dowd at 312-685-2678.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR ADULT CHOIR If you love to sing and have a passion for sacred music, please consider auditioning for the Queen of Angels Adult Choir. We are looking to expand our voices this season and we are currently seeking volunteers from the congregation. The choir will sing three Sundays a month. Rehearsals are conducted before and after Mass so there is a minimal time commitment. And if singing is not your forte but you still have a passion for music and some spare time on your hands, then join our supporting staff. We are always in need of extra hands to help organize our choir banquets, promote choir functions and assist with the basic weekly needs of the many choirs at Queen of Angels Parish. We would love to have you join us in music and fellowship this season. To schedule an audition or to sign up as a non-singing volunteer, please contact Kent Jager at kjager@queenofangelschicago.org or call 773-719-1701.

SHOP WITH THE ANGELS Stop by the Shop With The Angels table before or after the 8 and 9:30 Masses on Sunday or call the Parish Center. The Holiday Arts and Craft Fair indicates we are moving into the holiday season and Shop With the Angels makes it possible to have a stress-free holiday shopping experience. How about a gas card for someone who drives a lot? L.L. Bean for the person who loves the outdoors? Target for a helpful neighbor? Whole Foods for the gourmand in your life? Possibilities are endless! When you buy gift cards, you are helping Queen of Angels and giving the perfect gift that always fits the occasion! Choose whether your profits go to the parish, the Lyman Scholarship Fund or towards a specific school tuition account.

JASC ON THE MOVE! The Jane Addams Senior Caucus (JASC), Lakeview Action Coalition and allied groups will rally November 7 under Senators’ windows at the Federal Plaza, Dearborn and Adams, to demand Senators Durbin and Kirk work to preserve safety net programs such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and HUD housing programs. The rally starts at 10:15 a.m. Monday and the march starts at 11 a.m. “Many older women, especially older women of color, would suffer the brunt of these cuts,” said Mary Elizabeth Burns, a retired nurse’s assistant and leader of the Jane Addams Senior Caucus. The “Super Congressional Committee” is meeting behind closed doors eying cuts to safety net programs. If you cannot come, please support the effort with your prayers. Contact Pat Drennan at 773-539-0074.

"In you, Lord, I have found my peace"

A REFLECTION FROM SSVD In the Gospel today, we hear the good news that when we keep our focus on God and serve one another, God exalts us! This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent DePaul was able to show that we indeed love our neighbors by assisting families with grocery gift certificates, and providing help with utility and rent bills. Thank you!

WILL YOU ASSIST THE LYMAN FUND? Once a month, the collection includes the monthly Lyman Scholarship Fund. The Lyman Scholarship Fund was established to help families in need of assistance in making a tuition payment. We are united by our commitment to “the sharing of faith and knowledge,” as our Parish Mission Statement declares, even in the face of economic uncertainty and the rising costs of educating a child. A growing number of families need assistance from the Lyman Fund. Use the green envelope provided in your envelope packet or place your donation in any envelope marked “Lyman Fund.” The Lyman collection is the first Sunday of the month but donations are accepted at any time. Helping a family in need continues the purpose of our church. The next collection will be the weekend of November 5 and 6. Thank you.

JOIN THE FUN AT ANKLEBITERS Are you a parent of a small child? Join us Mondays when school is in session at 10 a.m. in the school basement. Enter using the north play lot entrance and arrive no later than 10:30 a.m. to sign in. This group is for parents, caregivers and their children aged 3 and under. Contact Michelle Stork at 773-255-8133.

GET READY FOR THANKSGIVING! Market Day can streamline your food preparation with restaurant quality results and helps Queen of Angels School, too! Pick up a Market Day order form in church or school or visit www.marketday.com to see more than 200 quality food items. Market Day has healthy snacks, quick entrees, and a long line of convenience foods available. Market Day has been a long-time presence at Queen of Angels for a reason: the items are high quality and the profits go directly to the school. Why not make a difference and do some grocery shopping along the way? This is a great way to help Queen of Angels School with very little effort. Online Market Day orders are due by 11 p.m. Wednesday, November 16. Pick-up will be 9:15 a.m. Saturday, November 19 at the Guild Hall. Want to help, call Nancy at 773-539-7510?

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN THE HOME When talk is made of domestic violence, just who and what is being discussed?
“I am an abuser. I am male, female, educated or not, wealthy, poor or in the middle. I represent every ethnic and racial group. I may or may not have been abused as a child or adult myself. I do not necessarily dabble in alcohol or other drugs, but I may. I am a Christian, Muslim, Jew... from any and all religious backgrounds. I don’t like myself very much, but I don’t seem to be able to stop what I am doing.
“I may be more abusive when I am angry and I seem to react strongly when I think a situation is getting out of my control. Sometimes, my violence is physical but not always. I also abuse people verbally, psychologically and sexually. Sometimes I am so subtle, people don’t even know it’s happened until much later when they feel bad.”
MYTH: Most of the time domestic violence is not really that serious.
FACT: Domestic violence is a crime, an illegal act with serious consequences.
Although there are aspects of domestic violence (e.g. emotional, psychological, spiritual or financial abuse) that may have not be considered legally criminal, the U.S. Bishops have stated that no one should stay in a violent relationship. Call the 24-hour hotline at 800-799-7233.

...A REFLECTION FROM SVDP The Gospel predicts end times; our challenge, though, is to live faithfully now. St. Vincent often asked this simple question: What would Jesus Christ do, if he were in my place now? Ask yourself: What would Jesus Christ do? Then bring your gift in to the Society of St. Vincent dePaul Thanksgiving food drive so that those who are suffering will be able to celebrate Thanksgiving.

LETTER FROM THE CARDINAL:
CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
For four decades, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has been a living example of our Church’s social teaching in action. This year, the CCHD is funding twenty organizations throughout Cook and Lake counties that are helping seniors, youth, and families to help themselves. The CCHD is committed to addressing the root causes of poverty, including the respect for life and the dignity of all human beings, and to abiding strictly to the Catholic Church’s social teaching.
Please make a special effort during this Thanksgiving season to give generously to the CCHD Collection during the weekend of November 20–21. Your contribution enables the CCHD to help build God’s kingdom of life, peace and justice in our world today. One hundred percent of the CCHD’s budget comes from individual donations of any size, just like yours. Your contribution does make a powerful difference.
May God bless you for your support of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
-- Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago

LETTER FROM CARDINAL GEORGE
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This weekend, we celebrate Seminary Sunday in the parishes of the Archdiocese of Chicago. On this occasion, we honor the ministry of the many priests who serve you so faithfully each day, as well as those now preparing to serve with that same charity in the future.
Here in the Archdiocese of Chicago, Mundelein Seminary is a place where vocations to the priesthood are discerned and strengthened. Each year, as I ordain the graduates of Mundelein Seminary to the priesthood of Jesus Christ, I do so with confidence that they have been formed for fidelity and service. The best example of the work of the seminary is reflected in the quiet and compassionate ministry of your pastor and parish priests as, each day, they live out their ordination commitment to bring Christ to you in word and sacrament. I thank them for their good example and you for your prayers and financial contributions which provide our future priests with the education and environment they need to “prepare well” to serve God's faithful.
I ask you to pray for those whom God is now calling to the ordained priesthood from among our families and friends. Talk to young men you know whom you judge would be good priests; encourage them to explore the possibility of priesthood. I ask you to especially remember your bishops and parish priests each day in prayer. You and your intentions are in my own prayers. Thank you and may God bless you.
Sincerely yours in Christ, -- Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago

THAT WE MAY HAVE PRIESTS
-- How many times in our lives has a priest brought healing to you and to your families?
-- How many times has a priest celebrated the liturgy on Sunday, throughout the week and at special parish and family celebrations, bringing Christ to you through the Eucharist?
-- How many times has a priest stood with you in joy at the birth of a child; at your bedside in the hospital, or in sorrow at the death of a loved one?
Let us pray for vocations to the priesthood; that we may have priests whose lives are directed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the service of God’s people. Thank you for your ongoing prayers and financial support for this Collection for Seminaries of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN SPRED Are you willing to set aside time for a worthwhile evening? In SPRED, adult friends with developmental disabilities are partnered with a volunteer catechist. When we meet with our friends we provide a place of peace to help them discover a sense of personal dignity and develop a spirit of prayer. We spend some time working on activities which settle us and help us to focus on the present. We then retire to the Holy Room, our mini chapel, where we share life stories; listen to the Word of Our Lord; sing and enjoy calming music; and share joyfully in the restful silence. We close our session with a simple sharing of food and fellowship – called Agape. We talk and enjoy the companionship of each other. Sessions have a calming and renewing influence on us as they deepen our awareness of God’s presence and love in our lives. This opportunity is offered only 24 evenings a year. You will be delighted with what we have to offer for you as you give yourself to one of our very special friends. Call Joann Salas at 773-583-1371 or Julia Hess in the SPRED office at 773-539-3634.
