We are the clay, O Lord, and you are the potter
O God, by whose word all things are made holy, grant your blessing on this wreath and on our family who will pray around it. Father of All, may your Holy Spirit prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ. May we receive abundant graces from you through Jesus our Lord. Amen. |
SSVD REFLECTS... As we begin Advent we are called to “be watchful be alert” as we stand in joyful anticipation for the grace of Christmas to once again bless our lives. Your gift in the St. Vincent dePaul Poor Box will help the poor to celebrate the grace of God’s love this Christmas.
Each year, the Ecuadorian Community at Queen of Angels honors Jesus Christ as Jesús del Gran Poder. A celebration will be held after the 12:30 p.m. Mass Sunday, December 4 in the lower church. There will also be a raffle. It is not required to be present at the raffle drawing to win. Raffle tickets will be on sale after the 12:30 Mass until the week of the celebration. All proceeds will benefit the parish. For raffle ticket sales, contact Judy Vega at 773-398-7595. SHARE OUR AMERICAN FREEDOMS In 2010, a total of 619,913 people who came to this country as immigrants swore the oath of allegiance and became U.S. Citizens. Requirements in this process include multiple applications, interviews and tests, in order to ensure that naturalized citizens have familiarity with American government and history, a working knowledge of the English language and good moral character.
The road to citizenship can be long and difficult. At Queen of Angels, a ministry exists to help our brothers and sisters who have begun this process and are studying for the interviews and examinations. Help is needed to lead these classes, which are offered free of charge as a service to the community.
Volunteers must be patient, caring and able to keep up on current events and changes in immigration regulations. Internet access, teaching skills, or competence in a foreign language can be helpful but are not necessary. Most important is a love of the United States and the freedoms that we enjoy, including the freedom to adopt this country as one’s own. Training is available from Deacon Ben Nieves, who has taught the class for 14 years.
U.S. Citizenship Classes are held from 6:30 p.m.to 8 p.m. on Wednesday evenings at the Parish Center. For more information, to volunteer or sign up for the class, please call the parish office at 773-539-7510.
WILL YOU ASSIST THE LYMAN FUND? On the first Sunday of each month, the collection includes the monthly Lyman Scholarship Fund. The Lyman Scholarship Fund was established to help families in need of assistance in making a tuition payment. A growing number of families need assistance from the Lyman Fund. Use the green envelope provided in your envelope packet or place your donation in any envelope marked “Lyman Fund.” The next Lyman collection will be the weekend of December 3-4 but donations are accepted at any time. Helping a family in need continues the mission of our church. Thank you.
LABELS FOR EDUCATION The Labels for Education program is a great way to earn FREE merchandise for Queen of Angels School. Label collection and redemption is very easy. Save labels from eligible Campbell products and send them to the school. Ask friends and family to collect labels on behalf of our school! Visit www.labelsforeducation.ca for a complete listing of eligible products. Drop off labels at the school office, in the collection basket during Mass or at the back of church. Thank you for your support. Contact Mrs. Ami Allen at aallen@queenofangelschicago.org for more information.

| IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO REGISTER FOR CHILDREN’S RELIGIOUS ED CLASSES Children not attending a Catholic school may be registered for Sunday Morning Religious Education Classes (Kindergarten through Level 7) and Confirmation Preparation (eighth grade through high school). These classes have already begun for the 2011-2012 school year. Classes are structured to help children learn and grow in their faith during each successive year. Preparation is included for the sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation, but a well-rounded religious education includes much more. Help your children develop the gifts of faith that you and their godparents gave them at Baptism. Children are invited to begin Religious Education when they are entering kindergarten or first grade. For students new to the program or transferring from another church or school, we will work with each family to place them in the appropriate program and class. Register at the parish office or by calling the Religious Education office at 773-769-4211. 23. |

| CONSCIENCE RIGHTS VIOLATE SWEEPING HHS MANDATE In implementing the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (the new health care reform law), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently issued a rule requiring almost all private health plans to cover contraception and sterilization as “preventive services” for women. The mandate even forces individuals and groups with religious or moral objections to purchase and provide such coverage if they are to receive or provide health coverage at all. This poses an unprecedented threat to individual and institutional religious freedom. The rule includes a religious exemption so extremely narrow that it protects almost no one. It covers only a “religious employer” that has the “inculcation of religious values” as its purpose, primarily employs and serves persons who share its religious tenets, and is a church organization under two narrow provisions of the tax code. A great many religious organizations—including Catholic colleges and universities, as well as hospitals and charitable institutions that serve the public—will be ineligible. Individuals and religiously affiliated health insurers will not qualify for the exemption. The new rule would force insurance plans to cover “all Food and Drug Administration approved contraceptive methods, sterilization procedures, and patient education and counseling for all women with reproductive capacity.” Never before has the federal government required private health plans to include such coverage. The FDA-approved “emergency contraception” (EC) drugs that are covered by this mandate can work by interfering with implantation of a newly conceived human being. Also, the drug the FDA most recently approved for EC, "Ella,” a close analogue to the abortion drug RU-486, has been shown in animal tests to cause abortion. Thus, the mandate includes drugs that may cause an abortion both before and after implantation. -- ACTION: Please send an e-mail message to HHS by visiting www.usccb.org/conscience. Once you send your comments to HHS, you will be automatically invited to send a message to your elected representatives in Congress, urging them to support the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act (H.R. 1179/S. 1467) to ensure that such federal mandates do not violate Americans’ moral and religious convictions. -- MESSAGE TO HHS: “Pregnancy is not a disease, and drugs and surgeries to prevent it are not basic health care that the government should require all Americans to purchase. Please remove sterilization and prescription contraceptives from the list of ‘preventive services’ the federal government is mandating any drug that may cause an early abortion, and to fully respect religious freedom as other federal laws do. The narrow religious exemption in HHS’s new rule protects almost no one. I urge you to allow all organizations and individuals to offer, sponsor and obtain health coverage that does not violate their moral and religious convictions.” -- WHEN: Send your comments to HHS by the end of the public comment period, September 30. |

| FAMILY-FUN PB & J PARTY! The Commons Community Service Team is holding its first monthly PB & J Party of the year with the after-care students on Wednesday, August 31. You are welcome to join us in making PB&J sandwiches and assembling sack lunches for the homeless and elderly guests of St. Teresa’s Loaves and Fishes Program. We have jobs for toddlers through adults. Kids love pitching in while learning to help others. And what do we do with any leftover sandwiches? Yep, we eat them! This event is in the school cafeteria from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Please direct questions to Donna Czech at 771-271-0377 or donna_czech@yahoo.com; or contact Lisa Krappman at lisa@krappman.com or 773-442-8747. COLLECTION THROUGH LABOR DAY Needed are travel– and individual-sized toiletries for the Franciscan Outreach Ministry, which runs one of the largest case management programs and shelters for the homeless in Chicago. Larger-sized toiletries are also being collected for Girls and Boys Town, a transitional teen shelter in the Back-of-the-Yards neighborhood. A collection basket is in the Gathering Space at church; donations can also be brought to the Parish Center. A REFLECTION FROM SSVD... Today we hear Jesus say to us, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” The challenge is to let go so God can lead us. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent dePaul enabled the poor to experience Jesus’ presence by assisting 11 families by providing furniture, special shoes and baby items, $1,050 for housing bills and referrals to needed services. With your help this month, we provided school supplies and backpacks to dozens of children at the start of the school year. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL BOX GONE For many years there has been a St. Vincent DePaul donation box in the parish parking lot. Due to recent problems, the box has been removed. An alternative way for parishioners to help meet the needs of the poor is being considered by the Queen of Angels Conference of the Society of St. Vincent dePaul. Please be respectful of this decision and do not leave anything in the parking lot. Until this situation is resolved, please take your donations elsewhere. |
FIRST TARGET, NOW WHOLE FOODS! Whole Foods has joined the Shop With the Angels lineup. For a variety of retail gift cards, stop by the Shop With The Angels table before or after the 8 and 9:30 Masses on Sunday or call the Parish Center at 773-539-7510. Whole Foods cards are available in $25 and $100 denominations.
NICODEMUS MINISTRY When a parishioner dies, the priest celebrates the Mass of Christian Burial. The final Prayers of Commendation at the cemetery are led by a lay person. It is a sign that when a parishioner dies, other members of the parish -— and not just the priest —- pray. Volunteers are needed to minister to grieving families. Follow the kindness of Nicodemus who, with Joseph of Arimathea, buried Jesus.
GALA OF THE ARTS PLANNED The 10th Annual Gala of the Arts will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, September 9 in the Grand Ballroom of Navy Pier. The recent stars of Chicago’s Jersey Boys will perform. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? Despite the rain, a merry band of Queen of Angels folks sorted, tagged, sold, provided refreshment and child care at last week’s sale as part of the Ravenswood Manor Garage Sale. Profits were designated for the Queen of Angels Green Team efforts and profitable it was! In one day, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., a whopping $2,700 was collected for the cause. Thanks to all who donated, assisted in some way or stopped by to pick up a few things. Special thanks go to Eileen Rochford and Mike Beyer (as well as Declan and Jessie) for opening their home as both staging area and selling location.
SCHÖNEN DANK Many thanks to Msgr. Jim Kaczorowski for hosting last Saturday at the 5 p.m. Mass when Fr. Paul Reicher from St. John Berchmans presided at the first German-English Mass in Queen of Angels history! Linda Mueller and Rachel Hohner did the readings and intercessions. Kent Jager played both organ and piano, accompanying the Mixed Chorus of the Society of Danube Swabians of Chicago. Thanks to John Staller who assumed the role of leader during the Novena to the Mother of Perpetual Help. Christine Murphy, our Sacristan, joined the choir and also did much work behind the scenes. It was a wonderful event! As Msgr. Kaczorowski said, this bilingual Mass and German Novena reminded us that Queen of Angels was founded more than a hundred years ago by families from Germany and Ireland. Vielen herzlichen Dank! — Maria Bappert, Parishioner and Choir Director, Mixed Chorus of the Society of Danube Swabians
HELP US GO GREEN TO SAVE GREEN The Queen of Angels Green Team is working on developing a plan to reduce energy use and the associated cost at Queen of Angels School and, ultimately, our parish.
