Celebrating Holy Week Through Easter

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD
The Easter season which we will continue to celebrate until Pentecost is a time when we recall through our readings at Mass the many miracles and events of the days following Jesus’ Resurrection. In a different way, we also recall the three days of the Easter Triduum, which bring us from the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper to the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Let’s take a look back at those days we celebrated in Holy Week just a short time ago and reflect on how they relate to the readings of the Easter season.

Holy Thursday At the end of today’s gospel we read that following Jesus’ appearance to the disciples on the way to Emmaus, these followers recounted to the other disciples all that had happened in their surprise meeting with Jesus. The revelation for them was complete when Jesus broke bread in their midst, the moment of recognition for the Emmaus travelers. The breaking of the bread was the ultimate discovery of just WHO it was that appeared to them. It was Jesus’ intent that the Eucharist be the means by which his presence would be with us forever. Just as we need sustenance for our physical life and its needs, so do our spirits need the strength and nourishment found in the gift of the Eucharist.

Good Friday In the Eucharist we and the disciples at Emmaus recognize that Jesus is the giver of divine life, that gift which is the connecting link between ourselves and God, the nourishment that sustains our spirit on its journey to God. If we allow this presence to penetrate our spiritual life, then we, too, can forgive as Jesus forgave his crucifiers. We can assist the other who is in need of a helping hand, as Jesus invited one of those crucified with him to eternal life. We can ultimately hand over our spirit to God, as Jesus did when he said, “Into your hands I commend my spirit.”

Easter Sunday You may have noticed that the Resurrection stories come to us from each of the four evangelists. If we read these Easter stories, we discover that Jesus appeared off and on to his friends and other faithful followers. Through his repeated presence, he gave the disciples assurance of how he would be with them once he ascended to heaven. Is this not also true for ourselves?

Take a few moments this week and recall times when you have sensed Jesus’ presence in your midst. He does show himself to us also, often in unexpected ways. Perhaps it is during a time of quiet when we have some moments between ourselves and God, or the joy of a family gathering, such as many of you had on Easter Sunday, or the success of a friend or neighbor. At such times you may have experienced the gift of divine presence, of Jesus in your midst. Then there are the times when distress also enters life — a family member is ill, the job isn’t going well, anxiety builds up about the companions and activities of one’s children. In all of these times, Jesus also shows himself to us. Easter, the Resurrection of Jesus, gives us hope to live in the spirit of God’s presence as life unfolds.

At the close of today’s gospel, it is written that Jesus opened the eyes of his followers so that they could better understand all that had been revealed through the Scriptures. All these revelations had come to pass. The apostles were now commissioned to go out and proclaim the truth of God’s work through Jesus. Are we not also commissioned to be witnesses of the Easter message, called to give witness of what we profess and believe as baptized Christians?

It is my prayer that the glory of the Easter season may be reflected in each and every one of you as members of Queen of Angels Parish.

HE IS RISEN TODAY! ALLELUIA!

Dear Parishioners,

Long ago, St. Augustine said, “We are Easter people and our song is Alleluia.” This is certainly so, for the heart and core of our faith is the Easter message.

Easter is a time of new life, rebirth and renewal. During the beautiful days of Easter we renew our baptismal promises to our loving God. My prayer is that you will respond wholeheartedly to your baptismal call and celebrate the Lord’s Resurrection through your faithful service to others this Easter.

In the name of our parish staff may I take this opportunity to thank you for all your cooperation in building God’s kingdom at Queen of Angels. May you and your loved ones have a Holy and Blessed Easter!

In the Risen Lord,
Rev. James T. Kaczorowski
Pastor

¡EL HA RESUCITADO! ¡ALELUYA!
Estimados Feligreses,

Pbro. James T. Kaczorowski
Párroco

Parish Lenten Mission is This Week!

This Monday through Wednesday, March 3 to 5, we will gather as a parish to reflect on the Lenten season and prepare ourselves for the celebration of the great mystery of our faith, the Resurrection. All evenings begin at 7 p.m. Joining us this year to offer talks on Holy Week and the Gospel of Matthew is Father Joe Mulcrone. He is the Director of the Catholic Office of the Deaf, a department of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Father Mulcrone has ministered in the deaf community for more than 30 years. All are invited to these three prayer-filled evenings in the church, which will include a special Lenten Reconciliation service on Wednesday. Father Mulcrone’s mission talks will be translated into American Sign Language by interpreter Domenica Pappas.

Father Mulcrone is a good friend of mine. He inspires me every day with his dedication to his ministry and his deep faith. I hope you will take the time to come listen to his message and be moved by his words.
