THANK YOU FROM LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR
On behalf of our family of Little Sisters and Residents, thank you for the opportunity to visit your parish last summer and for the gift of $2,255.03 made possible by the generosity of Queen of Angels parishioners. Your generosity enables us to continue our mission of caring for the elderly poor.
On October 11 we marked our two-year anniversary of the Canonization of our Mother Foundress, St. Jeanne Jugan. This wonderful honor, recognized throughout the world, gives us a renewed passion for continuing the important work of St. Jeanne Jugan. The Little Sisters of the Poor have continued her tradition of opening their homes to the elderly poor, treating each person with respect and dignity, and providing a home filled with care and love until the Lord himself calls them home. Strengthened by our faith, we are assured the Lord will provide for the needs of those he confides to our care.
Thank you for your help in continuing the work of St. Jeanne Jugan. It is a privilege for each of us because as she said, “ In caring for the elderly poor, we care for Jesus.”
Sincerely in Christ, — Sr. Patricia Mary, Little Sisters of the Poor

KICKS FOR RAMS Let’s hear it for Seamus McDonagh, one of eight Gordon Tech Rams football players recognized as all-conference selections. In addition, Julian Leon was named an all-conference selection for soccer, also representing Gordon Tech. These gentlemen are continuing the outstanding athletic careers they began at Queen of Angels School.

IT’S BOWLING SEASON! The Ravenswood Catholic Young Adults (RCYA) will be bowling on Monday evenings beginning November 7 through the end of February at Lincoln Square Lanes, 4874 N. Lincoln Ave. (above the hardware store). Lincoln Square Lanes has agreed to host the group for a mere $4.50 per game per person and $4 per person for shoe rental. Bowling will be every Monday beginning at 7:30 p.m. through the end of February. All skill levels are invited. This is a great way to meet fellow parishioners and strengthen ties with the community. For more information, please contact Leah Bertke at lbert@alumni.nd.edu or Tracy O’Dowd at 312-685-2678.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR ADULT CHOIR If you love to sing and have a passion for sacred music, please consider auditioning for the Queen of Angels Adult Choir. We are looking to expand our voices this season and we are currently seeking volunteers from the congregation. The choir will sing three Sundays a month. Rehearsals are conducted before and after Mass so there is a minimal time commitment. And if singing is not your forte but you still have a passion for music and some spare time on your hands, then join our supporting staff. We are always in need of extra hands to help organize our choir banquets, promote choir functions and assist with the basic weekly needs of the many choirs at Queen of Angels Parish. We would love to have you join us in music and fellowship this season. To schedule an audition or to sign up as a non-singing volunteer, please contact Kent Jager at kjager@queenofangelschicago.org or call 773-719-1701.

SHOP WITH THE ANGELS Stop by the Shop With The Angels table before or after the 8 and 9:30 Masses on Sunday or call the Parish Center. The Holiday Arts and Craft Fair indicates we are moving into the holiday season and Shop With the Angels makes it possible to have a stress-free holiday shopping experience. How about a gas card for someone who drives a lot? L.L. Bean for the person who loves the outdoors? Target for a helpful neighbor? Whole Foods for the gourmand in your life? Possibilities are endless! When you buy gift cards, you are helping Queen of Angels and giving the perfect gift that always fits the occasion! Choose whether your profits go to the parish, the Lyman Scholarship Fund or towards a specific school tuition account.

Use the green envelope provided or simply write “Lyman Fund” on an envelope. Your donation will always be welcome... and always appreciated. God bless you.

REFLECTION FROM THE SSVD Today we celebrate “Good Shepherd Sunday” where we reflect on Jesus’ care and love of us and hear his words, “I came so that they may have life and have it more abundantly.” By your gift to the Society of St. Vincent DePaul you will reveal the love of the “Good Shepherd” to your suffering brothers and sisters.

NICODEMUS MINISTERS STILL NEEDED The shortest verse in the entire Bible is: “And Jesus wept” (Jn 11:35). Why does that short sentence merit its own verse? Perhaps it is because at that moment, Jesus does what we all may do when someone we love dies: he grieves for a friend. Will you volunteer to help a grieving family by praying with them at their loved one’s final resting place? The consolation and prayers you offer are a sign of the parish’s love and support. Follow the kindness of Nicodemus who, with Joseph of Arimathea, buried Jesus. Training is provided. This ministry may be a good fit for any parishioner who is retired, works from home, or has flexible time during the late morning and early afternoon hours any day Monday through Saturday. The need is especially urgent for a Nicodemus Minister who speaks Spanish. Call 773-539-7510.

CAN YOU HELP THE LYMAN FUND? Once a month, the collection includes the monthly Lyman Scholarship Fund. The Lyman Scholarship Fund was established to help families in need of assistance in making a tuition payment. A growing number of families need assistance from the Lyman Fund. Your help is needed to make sure no child is denied an education at Queen of Angels School because a tuition payment is missed. Use the green envelope provided in your envelope packet or place your donation in an envelope marked “Lyman Fund.” The Lyman collection is generally the first Sunday of the month but donations are accepted at any time. Helping a family in need continues the purpose of our church. Thank you for your generosity.

A REFLECTION FROM THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL In the Gospel today, Jesus stands in our midst and says: “Peace be with you!” During Mass we turn to each other and say, “Peace be with you!” As you put your gift into the St. Vincent dePaul box at the top of the stairs, you say “Peace be with you!” to those who are poor and hungry.

THE APOSTLES WORKED MANY WONDERS
“I came to Catholic Charities when I was near death… both from drinking and from an infection I was too far gone to address,” says Brian, a former client in our substance abuse program. “I had no money for insurance, but Catholic Charities accepted me.” Brian’s counselor, a seasoned professional, worked wonders with Brian, who had resisted help from other sources. Somehow, she was able to get through to him. Today, Brian has a radio show where he spreads the “good news” of his recovery to help and inspire others. Your gift to the Catholic Charities Collection on Mother’s Day helps us give critical support to people fighting addiction, particularly the uninsured.

LETTER FROM CARDINAL GEORGE:
CATHOLIC CHARITIES MOTHER’S DAY APPEAL NEXT WEEK

The Season of Easter is a season of hope. This year, the Catholic Charities Collection on Mother’s Day very appropriately occurs during this holy season. The life, death and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ won for us the gifts of salvation and hope. On Mother’s Day, we celebrate the life-giving love and devotion of the heroic women who modeled and passed on to us the gifts of hope and faith.

During the Season of Easter, the readings reiterate themes of the new life that is ours in the Risen Christ. As Catholics, we are people of hope who share this gift with our brothers and sisters of all faiths, especially those who are in need. For 93 years, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago has restored hope to poor or struggling families and individuals, because hope is what matters most to a homeless family with a parent out of work, or a senior on a limited income who lives alone.

Last year, more than a million people of all ages, races and religions received services through Catholic Charities’ 159 programs at 156 sites in Cook and Lake Counties. Seniors, parents and children, pregnant and parenting teens, and hungry and homeless families and individuals come to Catholic Charities hoping to find the basic necessities to maintain life: food, clothing, housing, parenting skills and a renewed sense of dignity. They find professional and compassionate help to ease their anxiety, work their way out of poverty, build healthy family relationships, and solve the problems that keep them from independence and financial self-sufficiency.

From conception to natural death, Catholic Charities strives to maintain the dignity and respect to which every human being is entitled. As our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI stated in his encyclical letter on Christian hope, Spe Salvi: “The one who has hope lives differently; the one who hopes has been granted the gift of a new life.” Thank you for your continued gift of hope, your charity and your willingness to open your hearts in prayerful and practical support of the poor and vulnerable with your gift to the Catholic Charities Collection on Mother’s Day.

May Mary, the Mother of Jesus and of the Church, and her Divine Son bless you and your families with hope, peace and joy as you celebrate Mother’s Day and the Easter Season. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
— Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago

-- Cardenal Francis George, O.M.I., Arzobispo de Chicago

For the first time in our school’s history, all four seventh and eighth grade teams were showcased in the championships! Thank you for your dedication and sportsmanship. We are all so very proud, and look forward to watching your continued growth on the court next year. SPRED: PETER NEEDS A FRIEND Catechists and friends of the three Queen of Angels SPRED communities are now basking in the joy of our SPRED family mass last weekend. The experience of the welcoming parish community and the memory of the liturgical celebration will enrich our sharing as we gather in coming weeks. A good experience of catechesis is grounded in rich liturgical experience. Our parish and our Pastor make those experiences a wonderful reality for us.
We hope the experience has touched many of you who were present. We hope the joy of our friends has touched your heart and perhaps moved you to consider becoming a participant in this program. One friend in our Thursday evening group is without a partner. Peter has been in SPRED for many years. He is discovering the value of lasting friendships as he lives with a disability that will challenge him for the rest of his life. Peter needs a partner who will show him respect and honor his life experiences. He needs someone who will walk in faith and help him to become more certain that God is with him always in his journey.
Come to the Parish Center one evening to observe what we do as we gather for our SPRED sessions with our friends. You will know right away if this is a program for you. Watch the session through a one-way window. No commitment is necessary until you have had time to see a session, meet some volunteers, meet Peter and pray about it.
We also have groups on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and we are always looking for new volunteers as people’s lives change and commitments end. Please call now to observe a session on March 1, 2 or 3, or March 15, 16, or 17. Please contact Julie Hess at julia.spredcrw@sbcglobal.net or 773-539-3634.

GREEN TEAM SHOUT OUT FOR GREEN AWARD TO CUB SCOUTS Great work, Scouts! The Green Committee wants to give a big shout out to Cub Scout Pack 3894 and their Blue and Gold organizers. The Scouts showed their respect for our planet by switching to cloth tablecloths, buying metal utensils to be used at Pack events, bringing water bottles to use and recycling what they could. They really showed leadership and forward-thinking. We commend their efforts! If you know of another Queen of Angels group deserving a “Green” award, please contact the school.
The next Trash Free Tuesday is March 1. Get ready to go trash free and feel to practice with trash free lunches between now and then.

KNIGHTS KNEWS The Pep Rally and Pack the Gym Nights were very successful. Thanks to all of those who came out and cheered on our Knights. Your support gives a boost of confidence to our student athletes. There are still games left so please make time to come out and see our athletes do their best to represent Queen of Angels. It’s also the perfect time to check out the new gym floor, made possible through the efforts of all who contributed to the 2010 Annual Catholic Appeal with the support of the Athletic Board.

MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK! It’s not too late to give to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Yes, Queen of Angels reached our goal but now every dollar that is sent to the Campaign comes back to us two-fold! If you have not yet completed your pledge, please prayerfully consider doing so. If you have not previously given to the Appeal, your donation will still be accepted and matched, dollar for dollar for Queen of Angels. If you have already met your pledge, please consider giving again. Drop your donation in the collection or send it to the Parish Center and we will see that it is sent to the appropriate office of the Archdiocese. Thank you!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
Thank you for supporting the SPRED Ministry at Queen of Angels. In The Pastoral Guidelines of the Archdiocese of Chicago for Persons with Disabilities it is stated that each member of our church has the right to know that “God loves you very much and that you belong to God’s people.” Perhaps nowhere is that more evident than here at Queen of Angels. Through your loving generosity, the SPRED groups of Queen of Angels continue to welcome our friends with disabilities into the liturgical and spiritual life of our parish. Through an adaptive catechesis, volunteer sponsors provide nourishment for the spiritual lives of each SPRED friend as well as opportunities to give glory to God.
Once again your wonderful support of our annual Nut Sale Fundraiser has provided us with the means to continue this important ministry in a most beautiful setting among parishioners who care. We would love to sell out the balance of these tasty treats this final weekend – Cashews and Deluxe Mixed Nuts are plentiful. A few other items are there for you as well.
Blessings wrapped in warm gratitude,
— The Catechists and SPRED Friends of Queen of Angels

CAN YOU HELP THE LYMAN FUND? Once a month, the collection includes the monthly Lyman Scholarship Fund. The Lyman Scholarship Fund was established to help families in need of assistance in making a tuition payment. We are united by our commitment to “the sharing of faith and knowledge,” as our Parish Mission Statement declares, even in the face of economic uncertainty and the rising costs of educating a child.

MASS INTENTIONS Intentions may be placed for Sunday, weekday, holy day or holiday Masses in 2011. Masses may be offered in the name of friends or relatives, living or deceased, for those in need of extra prayers or in honor of a beloved saint. Dates special to loved ones are great times to remember them in the prayers of the Mass. Suggested donation is $10. Please call 773-539-7510.

NICODEMUS MINISTRY When a parishioner dies, the priest celebrates the Mass of Christian Burial. The final Prayers of Commendation at the cemetery are led by a lay person. Laity are urged to lead their brothers and sisters in prayer. It is a sign that when a parishioner dies, other members of the parish — and not just the priest — pray. Volunteers are needed to minister to grieving families. Follow the kindness of Nicodemus who, with Joseph of Arimathea, buried Jesus. Training provided. Call the parish office at 773-539-7510.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION ON FRIDAYS Every Friday, the Blessed Sacrament is placed out for veneration and prayer from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. To reach the Adoration Chapel, enter the church through the Claremont door, walk up the stairs, turn to the left and then to the left again. Walk down the passage behind the altar and enter the former baptistery where the Eucharist is exposed for veneration. Help us keep vigil with the Lord by making some time on Fridays for these beautiful moments of prayer. This is a wonderful way to begin the New Year. Visitors are asked to register in the sign-in book in the chapel when attending Adoration. Call Christine at 773-561-9072.
