"The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?"
-- Psalm 27:1

SSVD REFLECTION... In today’s Gospel, Jesus overcomes the temptations to wealth and power and esteem. As we begin Lent, may we open our hearts to the grace of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. In the month of February, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent dePaul was able to assist eight families, providing referrals to services and $1,700 for food, legal assistance, transportation, utility and rent bills. Thank you!

"Sell what you have and... follow me" -- Mark 10:21

INTERESTED IN THE CATHOLIC FAITH? TIME TO CHECK OUT RCIA
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is an opportunity to learn more about the Catholic faith. It is designed for those who have never been baptized or baptized with little or no affiliation or religious training in the Catholic faith; or those who were raised with no formal faith; or with faith from a religion other than Catholicism. Weekly sessions are from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays (see complete schedule here), and continue through the Easter Vigil, Saturday, March 30. The program is done in partnership with St. Matthias. Early sessions are informational meetings and no commitment is required. To register or for information, e-mail parish@queenofangelschicago.org or call 773-539-7510.

A REFLECTION FROM SSVD... In today’s Gospel today Jesus says: “Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then, come follow me.” Your donation in the Poor Box helps the Society of St. Vincent dePaul meet the needs of the poor in our  community. May God bless your generosity to the poor.

FOUND FAMILIES MASS NOVEMBER 4
As part of National Adoption Month in November, Queen of Angels will celebrate the annual Found Families Mass at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, November 4. If your family is the result of adoption or the foster system, we invite you to come to this mass for a special pre-Thanksgiving blessing in recognition of your commitment to each other. By your loving example, may others also be inspired to open their hearts and homes to all children in need.

COME SING WITH US! If you love to sing and have a passion for sacred music, please consider auditioning for the Queen of Angels Adult Choir. As we celebrate the Choir’s 40th anniversary, we are looking to expand our voices and we are currently seeking volunteers from the congregation. The Choir will sing three Sundays each month. Rehearsals are conducted before and after Mass so there is a minimal time commitment. And if singing is not so much your thing but you still have a passion for music and some spare time on your hands, then join our supporting staff. We are always in need of extra hands to help organize our choir banquets, promote choir functions, and assist with the basic weekly needs of the many choirs at Queen of Angels Parish. To schedule an audition or to sign up as a non-singing volunteer, please contact Kent Jager at kjager@queenofangelschicago.org or call 773-719-1701. We would love to have you join us in music and fellowship this season.

ANKLEBITERS ON MONDAYS Are you a parent or caregiver of a small child? Join us at 10 a.m. on Mondays (when school is in session) in the school basement. Use the north play lot entrance and arrive by 10:30 a.m. to sign in. This group is for parents, caregivers and their children ages 3 and younger. For more information, contact Angie Foeller at 773-655-5843 or angie.foeller@gmail.com.

ALL ARE WELCOME! Are you new to our parish community? Welcome! Have you recently moved? May God bless your new home! Please visit or contact the parish office at 773-539-7510 or parish@queenofangelschicago.org to introduce yourself, register or adjust your existing registration. Thank you!

HOPE: AN IMMIGRANT STORY
“I was a stranger and you welcomed me...” (Matthew 25:35)
In immigrant parishes throughout the Archdiocese, Immigrant-to-Immigrant/Pastoral Migratoria leaders provide lay leadership who are walking with Catholic DREAMers as they apply for Deferred Action status. Pastoral Migratoria agents like Nancy of Blue Island walk with DREAMers. She shares, “I feel the trust of the DREAMers. My church has instilled in me a greater commitment to serve.” DREAMers know they are supported by their families and their communities. With the help of others, they are one step closer to receiving Deferred Action Status. How can we support Catholic DREAMers in the Archdiocese of Chicago? Pray for Catholic DREAMers and learn more about the Pastoral Migratoria program:

ESPERANZA: UNA HISTORIA INMIGRANTE
“Yo fui un extraño y tu me acogiste...” (Mateo 25:35)

WORD OF LIFE...
"For most industries, it’s the bottom line that really matters. Abortions represented over 51 percent of Planned Parenthood’s clinic income (even though they calculate abortion as a mere 3 percent of services provided). And we as taxpayers are providing most of the rest of their income, as 46.5 percent of their revenues ($487 million in 2010) come from government grants and Medicaid, Title X and similar funding." -- Margaret H. Hartshorn, PhD., “Life Matters: Responding to Unplanned Pregnancy”, Respect Life Program 2012

COMING HOME: ST. PAUL'S HOUSE Coming Home, an evening to benefit St. Paul’s House, 3831 N. California Ave., will be from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, November 10. The event will honor the heritage of the Lutheran Life Community designed to serve older adults since 1921. Included will be fellowship, food and an inspirational message shared by Reverend Matt Fitzgerald of Saint Paul’s Church. All proceeds will benefit charitable care for St. Paul’s House residents. No St. Paul’s resident is turned away when their private income is depleted. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.StPaulsHouse.org or call Paddy Homan at 847-571-0291. Please give serious consideration to supporting the nursing home many of our own parishioners use following hospitalization or during their final days.

A REFLECTION FROM SSVD... If so, who are they, and what reason do they have to be there? Knowing the answers to these questions will help you to keep your kids safe even when you are not with them. NOTES ON THE ORGAN There is still time to donate to the restoration work for the Moller organ that has graced Queen of Angels for decades. Donation envelopes were included in last week’s Guide. Or simply place your donation in an envelope marked “Organ Fund.” The releathering project is designed to breathe new life into parts of the organ that are showing signs of wear and tear. This is not a cosmetic upgrade. This is a vital necessity to keep the organ from losing the ability to create specific notes. Several notes are already “missing” and we don’t want to compromise the integrity of the musical instrument at all. It is a classic and needs to remain so. There are so many causes that require financial assistance and support. When deciding where your charitable dollars go, please consider a lasting treasure like the Moller organ. Thank you for your generosity. (If you would prefer using a credit card, please call the Parish Center at 773-539-7510 or click the “Donate Now” button on our parish website, parish.queenofangelschicago.org, to donate online through GiveCentral.org.)

THANKS FROM TRANSFIGURATION
On behalf of the parish clergy, staff and parishioners of Transfiguration of Our Lord Parish, thank you for the Thanksgiving food donated to our church. We and the poor beneficiaries of the food you gave were happy and grateful for your thoughtfulness and kindness.

Rest assured of my personal prayers for you -- for good health and a successful pastorate -- almost every day at Mass and in my private prayers.

Again, thank you for your generosity. Please accept my apologies for the long delay in sending this letter!

-- Rev. Alfredo Salera, Pastor, Transfiguration of Our Lord

P.S. Special thanks to Ann McCormick and Roine and Scott Michaels.

SSVD REFLECTS... In the Gospel today, we find that Jesus would rise very early before dawn and go to a deserted place to pray and then he went out to preach and to heal. Praying for the poor can bring the love and peace of Jesus to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread.

Teens and Young Adults Update

Year of Teens and Young AdultsIn this Year of Teens and Young Adults, we continue to recognize and celebrate the gifts of young Catholics while calling them to greater participation in the life of the parish. Teen parishioners prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation, receive honors from their Catholic high schools, and lead their peers on Kairos retreats. Young adults are invited to take part in a Super Bowl Party at neighboring St. Benedict Parish.

Announcements, Week of January 8, 2012

All kings shall pay him homage, all nations shall serve him. — Psalm 72:11
— Salmo 72:11

PROMISE FULFILLED Isaiah reminds the people of God that the land shall be restored to their possession, they shall rejoice to see their people return from the bondage of exile, and they shall be a light to the nations. In other words, through the people of Israel, the Savior shall come to all people who seek God with a sincere heart. This brings joy and the radiance of God’s glory to all the world and to all people everywhere. Through the fidelity of the people of God, and through God’s fidelity to them, all people shall become God’s children and rejoice in the fulfillment of God’s promise to Israel.

HELP YOURSELF TO MARKET DAY Market Day provides restaurant quality results and helps Queen of Angels School, too! Pick up a Market Day order form in church or school or visit www.marketday.com to see more than 200 quality food items. Market Day has healthy snacks, quick entrees, and a long line of convenience foods. Market Day has been a long-time presence at Queen of Angels for a reason: the items are high quality and the profits go directly to the school. Make a difference and do some grocery shopping along the way. This is a great way to help Queen of Angels School with very little effort. Online Market Day orders are due by 11 p.m. Wednesday, January 25. Pick-up will be 9:15 a.m. Saturday, January 28 at the Guild Hall. If you would like to help, call Nancy at 773-539-7510.

HOSTS NEEDED The Parish Social following the 9:30 a.m. Mass needs people willing to help host these gatherings. Would you care for some coffee, some juice or a donut? If you attend the Parish Social on Sundays, you know you’re at the right place. Gather in the Lower Church and visit with friends while having a light snack. Are you able to bring baked goods or fruit on any given Sunday? If so, please call the Parish Center and leave your name and phone number. Organizations and ministries of the parish are urged to help in this effort. Beverages will be provided. Contact Walter Rucker, walt501@juno.com, or call 773-539-7510.

PLEASE COLLECT THOSE BOXTOPS! Each Box Tops coupon is worth a dime to Queen of Angels students. Local grocer Jewel-Osco is currently offering bonus Box Top coupons this week that can help the school earn even more money. Last year, our school earned more than $300 for our school library and classrooms through this program. Please clip Box Tops coupons from products including Cheerios®, Betty Crocker®, Pillsbury®, Juicy Juice®, Kleenex® and more. Drop coupons in boxes outside the school office or at the back of church. Contact Mrs. Allen at aallen@queenofangelschicago.org or Mrs. Diaz at gdiaz@queenofangelschicago.org for more information.

ALL ARE WELCOME! Are you new to our parish community? Welcome! Have you recently moved? May God bless your new home! Please visit or contact the parish office at parish@queenofangelschicago.org or 773-539-7510 to introduce yourself, register or adjust your existing registration. Thanks!

MINISTERS NEEDED FOR FAMILIES The shortest verse in the entire Bible is: “And Jesus wept” (John 11:35). Why does that short sentence merit its own verse? Perhaps it is because at that moment, Jesus does what we all may do when someone we love dies: he grieves for a friend. Will you volunteer to help a grieving family by praying with them at their loved one’s final resting place? The consolation and prayers you offer are a sign of the parish’s love and support. Follow the kindness of Nicodemus who, with Joseph of Arimathea, buried Jesus. Training is provided. The need is especially urgent for a Nicodemus Minister who speaks Spanish. This ministry may be a good fit for a parishioner who is retired, works from home, or has flexible time during the late morning and early afternoon hours any day Monday through Saturday. Call 773-539-7510.

WILL YOU ASSIST THE LYMAN FUND? Once a month, the collection includes the monthly Lyman Scholarship Fund. The Lyman Scholarship Fund was established to help families in need of assistance in making a tuition payment. We are united by our commitment to “the sharing of faith and knowledge,” as our Parish Mission Statement declares, even in the face of economic uncertainty and the rising costs of educating a child. A growing number of families need assistance from the Lyman Fund. Use the green envelope provided in your envelope packet or place your donation in any envelope marked “Lyman Fund.” The Lyman collection is the first Sunday of the month but donations are accepted at any time. Helping a family in need continues the purpose of our church. Thank you.

READY FOR ANKLEBITERS? Are you a parent of a small child? Join us Mondays when school is in session at 10 a.m. in the school basement. Enter using the north play lot entrance and arrive no later than 10:30 a.m. to sign in. This group is for parents, caregivers and their children aged 3 and under. Call 773-255-8133.

ESPERANZA: UNA HISTORIA MIGRANTE “Fuí forastero y ustedes me recibieron...” (Mateo 25:35). Él nunca volvió a casa aquel viernes.
