SPRED: PETER NEEDS A FRIEND Catechists and friends of the three Queen of Angels SPRED communities are now basking in the joy of our SPRED family mass last weekend. The experience of the welcoming parish community and the memory of the liturgical celebration will enrich our sharing as we gather in coming weeks. A good experience of catechesis is grounded in rich liturgical experience. Our parish and our Pastor make those experiences a wonderful reality for us.
We hope the experience has touched many of you who were present. We hope the joy of our friends has touched your heart and perhaps moved you to consider becoming a participant in this program. One friend in our Thursday evening group is without a partner. Peter has been in SPRED for many years. He is discovering the value of lasting friendships as he lives with a disability that will challenge him for the rest of his life. Peter needs a partner who will show him respect and honor his life experiences. He needs someone who will walk in faith and help him to become more certain that God is with him always in his journey.
Come to the Parish Center one evening to observe what we do as we gather for our SPRED sessions with our friends. You will know right away if this is a program for you. Watch the session through a one-way window. No commitment is necessary until you have had time to see a session, meet some volunteers, meet Peter and pray about it.
We also have groups on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and we are always looking for new volunteers as people’s lives change and commitments end. Please call now to observe a session on March 1, 2 or 3, or March 15, 16, or 17. Please contact Julie Hess at julia.spredcrw@sbcglobal.net or 773-539-3634.

GREEN TEAM SHOUT OUT FOR GREEN AWARD TO CUB SCOUTS Great work, Scouts! The Green Committee wants to give a big shout out to Cub Scout Pack 3894 and their Blue and Gold organizers. The Scouts showed their respect for our planet by switching to cloth tablecloths, buying metal utensils to be used at Pack events, bringing water bottles to use and recycling what they could. They really showed leadership and forward-thinking. We commend their efforts! If you know of another Queen of Angels group deserving a “Green” award, please contact the school.
The next Trash Free Tuesday is March 1. Get ready to go trash free and feel to practice with trash free lunches between now and then.

KNIGHTS KNEWS The Pep Rally and Pack the Gym Nights were very successful. Thanks to all of those who came out and cheered on our Knights. Your support gives a boost of confidence to our student athletes. There are still games left so please make time to come out and see our athletes do their best to represent Queen of Angels. It’s also the perfect time to check out the new gym floor, made possible through the efforts of all who contributed to the 2010 Annual Catholic Appeal with the support of the Athletic Board.

ONE DIME AT A TIME Did you know that each Box Tops coupon is worth a dime to Queen of Angels students? Last spring, our school earned more than $400 for our school library and classrooms through this program. Please clip Box Tops coupons from hundreds of products from Cheerios®, Betty Crocker®, Pillsbury®, Ziploc®, Kleenex®, Juicy Juice® and more. Drop off your coupons in the boxes outside the school office or at the back of church. Contact Mrs. Allen at aallen@queenofangelschicago.org or Mrs. Diaz at gdiaz@queenofangelschicago.org.

LABELS FOR EDUCATION The Labels for Education program is a great way to earn FREE merchandise for Queen of Angels School, and label collection and redemption is so easy. Participation in the program is simple! Save labels from eligible Campbell products and send them to the school. Let’s amplify our efforts by asking friends and family to collect labels on behalf of our school! Visit www.labelsforeducation.ca for a complete listing of eligible products and more information about the program. You can drop off labels at the school office or at the back of church. Thank you for your ongoing support. For more information, contact Mrs. Ami Allen at aallen@queenofangelschicago.org.

Stop by the SWTA table before or after the 8 and 9:30 Masses on Sunday or call the Parish Center. HARVEST JAM PROMISES GOOD OLD FASHIONED FUN
There’s nothing like a festival to celebrate the end of summer and all of the great things that come with fall. This year, North Side families can experience a good old-fashioned church festival at the Harvest Jam Fest celebrating the 100th anniversary of Queen of Angels Parish.

The Harvest Jam Fest will offer locals all of the traditional festival experiences plus a few modern additions. From start to finish this is an event that will truly celebrate the people and culture of this North Side community parish.

  • Food from local restaurants like Jury's and Merle’s will be available.
  • Get ready for an outstanding line up of bands, including Jacob Lee Band and Supernaut.
  • A little healthy neighborhood competition is planned in the form of a grill-off, a chili cook-off, and an apple pie baking contest for the adults (see entry forms below), and a Karaoke contest and Guitar Hero face-off for the kids.
  • Don’t miss the carnival games, including the Bingo tent! We’ll have three large jumping jacks for the kids and Pop-a-Shot and Skee Ball for the young at heart.

Your help is needed! Our annual Harvest Jam festival is made possible by the generous donations of local businesses and Queen of Angels families. We would greatly appreciate any donations to help underwrite our costs of hosting the festival. Families often choose to “sponsor” an area of the event, such as the popcorn machines we rent or the jumping jacks for the Kids Korner, which range in cost from $50 to $200. If you would like to make a donation, please make your check payable to Queen of Angels and mail or drop it off at the school office: Queen of Angels, c/o Donna Kalom 4520 N. Western Ave., Chicago, IL 60625. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Please volunteer at Harvest Jam! We're looking for helpers who are willing to work a two-hour shift on either September 19 from 1 to 10 p.m. or Sunday, September 20 between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. There are also early morning and late night set-up and take-down shifts, if you are interested. Please consider donating your time to help us run an enjoyable and successful event again this year. Contact Lisa Borelli at 773-474-2305 or Eileen Rochford at 312-953-3305 to volunteer, or download the volunteer form and return to the school or parish office or by e-mail to eileenr@theharbingergroup.com.

FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Every Friday, the Blessed Sacrament is placed out for veneration and prayer from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. To reach the Adoration Chapel, enter the church through the Claremont door, walk up the stairs, turn to the left and then to the left again. Walk down the passage behind the altar and enter the former baptistery where the Eucharist is exposed for veneration. Bring your thoughts and your bible, rosary, and books, or use the prayer resources in the adoration chapel. Spend some time with Jesus in the form of the Blessed Sacrament.
This is an excellent way to build special devotions into your week. Visitors are asked to register their attendance in the sign-in book in the chapel when attending Adoration. You may sign up for a particular hour of prayer every week. At some time during the day, before or after work, while out running errands, stop by the chapel for some quiet time with the Lord. Help us keep vigil with the Lord by making time on Fridays for these beautiful moments of prayer. Call Christine Murphy at 773-561-9072.

DO YOU FEEL CALLED TO THE DEACON FORMATION PROGRAM? A deacon is a man called by God to a ministry of service. With bishops and priests, the deacon receives the Sacrament of Holy Orders. He is an ordained minister, who may be married and have children. He is living in the lifestyle of the laity. Permanent Deacons are called to a three-fold ministry of service — of the Word, Charity and Justice and to live out their life in service to Jesus and their brothers and sisters in Christ. Do you believe Jesus may be inviting you to inquire about this ordained ministry? If so, your first step is having a heart-to-heart conversation with your family and Fr. Jim. Review the website at www.usml.edu (select Ministry Formation, then Deacon Formation). Contact Deacon Jim Cozzo, Jr. at 847-837-4563 or at jcozzo@usml.edu and request a pre-application form. Deacon Formation Program of the Archdiocese of Chicago meets at the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

SATURDAY ROSARY Join us to pray the Rosary after each 9 a.m. Saturday Mass. To lead the Rosary, please contact Joann at 773-583-1371 or green3256@yahoo.com.

IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO REGISTER FOR CHILDREN’S RELIGIOUS ED Children not attending a Catholic school may be registered for Sunday Morning Religious Education Classes (Kindergarten through Level 7) and Confirmation Preparation (eighth grade through high school). While sacramental preparation is a part of this program, it is not designed for sacrament preparation only. Classes are structured to help children learn and grow in their faith during each successive year.
Sunday morning classes begin next Sunday, September 13, at 10:45 a.m. in the school. Next week there will be an important meeting for parents of Confirmation candidates. In order to ensure that your child does not miss any classes or information, it is important to register before classes begin.
Registration for either program can be completed during normal business hours at the parish office or by calling the Religious Education office at 773-769-4986, ext. 23.

RCIA—AN INVITATION TO COME AND SEE! RCIA stands for Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. It is an opportunity for those who have never been baptized, or baptized with little or no affiliation or religious training in the Catholic religion, to learn and ask questions about the Catholic faith. This includes those who may have been baptized Catholic, but have not yet received their First Communion or Confirmation. Sometimes after the information meetings, prayer and reflection, participants choose to begin the process for becoming Catholic or coming into full Communion. It is important to note, however, that no commitment is expected of participants at this time.
Sometimes those of us who have been Catholic our whole lives forget to offer this invitation to others interested in becoming Catholic. We just assume that if they are interested, they will find their own way. Sharing with others, in a gentle way, the information about RCIA may be just what some of our relatives, friends and neighbors would welcome. They may be waiting for just such an opportunity or invitation.
RCIA sessions will begin September 22 and will meet on Tuesday evenings. Please call the Parish Center at 773-539-7510 and leave your name and number. We will contact you with further information.

RACHEL’S VINEYARDS RETREATS Rachel’s Vineyard is a weekend retreat program that offers healing to any woman or man who has struggled with the emotional or spiritual pain of abortion. The retreat is a chance to get away  from the daily pressures of work and family, to focus on a painful time in life and to begin healing.
Many experience an initial sense of relief after an abortion. Later, however, emotional problems can surface that may include depression, anger, flashbacks, emptiness, anxiety and unresolved grief. The retreat provides an opportunity to release repressed feelings in a non-judgmental atmosphere.
The next retreat program will be October 2 to 4 at the Fullerton Cenacle, 513 W. Fullerton in Chicago. Fee is $150. Contact Catherine Rennert at 815-968-1157 or cathy.rennert@gmail.com.
