Lent 2011: Feed your Body, Feed your Soul

LENTEN COMMUNITY BUILDING DINNER
Join Queen of Angels parishioners for dinner at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 15. Groups of eight will mix and mingle and share a meatless Friday night dinner in a fellow parishioner’s home. Sign up as a guest, or sign up as host, but don’t miss the chance to meet new people, build community and break bread with your parish family. Adults only, please.

Please sign up by April 8! Host families will be contacted on April 10. To sign up, fill out a form in the back of church and turn it in the collection basket or return to the Parish Center. Questions? Contact Amy Odwarka at 847-736-5446 or amyodwarka@hotmail.com.

LENTEN POTLUCK, SERVICE PROJECT FRIDAY
All parishioners, students and staff are invited to enjoy a meatless potluck supper together while helping our neighbors in need. Join us from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 1 in the Lower Church.

Participants are invited to bring dishes such as soup (in a crockpot), macaroni and cheese, rolls, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, vegetable trays, cheese and crackers or dessert. Water and juice boxes will be provided.

We ask you to consider bringing one of the items listed in today’s Lenten Food Drive article to support the Society of Saint Vincent DePaul’s (SVDP) Annual Lenten Food Drive.  A representative from the SVDP will talk about the work they do and the needs in our community. We will then sort the collected items, decorate delivery bags, make friendship boxes for homes with children and more. All ages are welcome.

To participate, contact Commons Community Service at 773-271-0377 or donna_czech@yahoo.com. Please state what dish you are bringing and how many family members are participating. This event is co-sponsored by Commons and the Society of Saint Vincent DePaul. Please join us for this collaborative effort!

Harvest Jam 2009

HARVEST JAM PROMISES GOOD OLD FASHIONED FUN
There’s nothing like a festival to celebrate the end of summer and all of the great things that come with fall. This year, North Side families can experience a good old-fashioned church festival at the Harvest Jam Fest celebrating the 100th anniversary of Queen of Angels Parish.

The Harvest Jam Fest will offer locals all of the traditional festival experiences plus a few modern additions. From start to finish this is an event that will truly celebrate the people and culture of this North Side community parish.

  • Food from local restaurants like Jury's and Merle’s will be available.
  • Get ready for an outstanding line up of bands, including Jacob Lee Band and Supernaut.
  • A little healthy neighborhood competition is planned in the form of a grill-off, a chili cook-off, and an apple pie baking contest for the adults (see entry forms below), and a Karaoke contest and Guitar Hero face-off for the kids.
  • Don’t miss the carnival games, including the Bingo tent! We’ll have three large jumping jacks for the kids and Pop-a-Shot and Skee Ball for the young at heart.

Your help is needed! Our annual Harvest Jam festival is made possible by the generous donations of local businesses and Queen of Angels families. We would greatly appreciate any donations to help underwrite our costs of hosting the festival. Families often choose to “sponsor” an area of the event, such as the popcorn machines we rent or the jumping jacks for the Kids Korner, which range in cost from $50 to $200. If you would like to make a donation, please make your check payable to Queen of Angels and mail or drop it off at the school office: Queen of Angels, c/o Donna Kalom 4520 N. Western Ave., Chicago, IL 60625. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Please volunteer at Harvest Jam! We're looking for helpers who are willing to work a two-hour shift on either September 19 from 1 to 10 p.m. or Sunday, September 20 between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. There are also early morning and late night set-up and take-down shifts, if you are interested. Please consider donating your time to help us run an enjoyable and successful event again this year. Contact Lisa Borelli at 773-474-2305 or Eileen Rochford at 312-953-3305 to volunteer, or download the volunteer form and return to the school or parish office or by e-mail to eileenr@theharbingergroup.com.

If you read this list from top to bottom and you volunteer but discover that we missed listing your ministry, please plan to come anyway. All attendees must RSVP by Wednesday, August 19 to the Parish Office so we can plan for this event. Please RSVP to 773-539-7510 or parish@queenofangelschicago.org.
