"Venga, y puestos de rodillas, adoremos y bendigamos
al Señor, que nos hizo."
— Salmo 95:6

TEAM WORK WORKS! We are many parts but one Body, thanks to the love of our Lord Jesus Christ!
-- Thanks to the Comite Guadalupano (Guadalupan Committee) of Queen of Angels for raising more than $470.00 for Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Our Lady of Guadalupe) festivities. The patron saint of Mexico was honored at Mass and a reception on December 12.
-- Jesús de Gran Poder (Jesus of Great Power), a festival of the Ecuadorian Community at Queen of Angels, raised more than $1,600.00 and brought many together on December 4 during Mass, the following reception and a raffle.
-- Nuestro Señor de Esquipulas (Our Lord of Esquipulas) was honored during a Mass and celebration on January 15 hosted by members of the Guatemalan community. The group gave $181.00 to the parish as a result.
These “fund”raisers did more than raise much-needed and even more appreciated money: they also provided a great deal of fun, prayer and celebration for all members of Queen of Angels. God bless you all for your kindness and generosity.

FOR UN“COMMON”LY GOOD FUN...
-- Valentine’s Day Dance. Join us for the Valentine’s Day Dance from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, February 11 in the Guild Hall Gym. This Queen of Angels tradition, sponsored by Commons, will feature a pot luck meal with fellow parishioners, dance contests, cake walk and more! A $10 donation per family is asked to help defray costs. E-mail donna_czech@yahoo.com if you have questions or would like to help.
-- PB&J Party. The Commons Community Service Team will hold the monthly PB&J Party with the after-care students from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 1 in the school lunchroom. Join us in making sandwiches and assembling sack lunches for the homeless and elderly guests of St. Teresa’s Loaves and Fishes program. There are jobs for everyone, toddler to adult. We could use a few more junior high or high school students or adults to help supervise the younger children. Thanks to Harvestime grocery store for continuing to donate the produce for this event. Want to help or need more info? Please direct questions to Julie Buckert at jules76_00@yahoo.com or 773-562-4625.

2012 Annual Catholic AppealACA 2012: “BE IMITATORS OF CHRIST”
The 2012 Annual Catholic Appeal is underway. Thank you to all who have responded to Cardinal George’s mailing. If you have received it and have not yet responded, please consider making a pledge to the appeal by mail.

This year, the theme of the Appeal is: “Be Imitators of Christ”. We are all challenged to try to live our lives using the life of Christ as an example. Christ gave us the path to eternal life. His love for each of us cannot be taken lightly. As we contemplate His gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work of our parish, our Archdiocese and the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude.

Our faith is lived in schools and parishes, soup kitchens and counseling centers, on street corners and in churches, where people of all backgrounds in every neighborhood of the Archdiocese of Chicago are served. Your gift to the Appeal helps to sustain Catholic schools, religious education, ministerial formation, and initiatives for life, peace and justice. Through its support of Catholic Relief Services, the Appeal serves people worldwide, without regard for religious affiliation, whose lives are devastated by natural disasters, illnesses, wars and famines.

Please make a pledge to the 2012 Annual Catholic Appeal. Any funds raised are carefully spent; it is money for God’s work, and we will use it accordingly. Your generosity makes a difference in the lives of many.

LAST CHANCE TO PATICIPATE IN SURVEY FOR PARENTS The Archdiocese of Chicago would like to understand how parents in our area make elementary school decisions for their children. We would appreciate your input through a brief online survey. Many factors go into these important decisions and the Archdiocese respects all of the different choices you have made. Understanding your views will help the Archdiocese improve the local Catholic school program and will also enable us to understand the perspectives and needs of those who have not chosen Catholic school. We would greatly appreciate your help with the survey whether or not your children attend a Catholic school. While the survey is offered by the Archdiocese of Chicago, the response will be specific to each school so that it is possible to better understand parents’ views in our specific community.
To access the survey, please visit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SchoolSurveyEnglish. For Spanish, go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SchoolSurveySpanish. The survey will be available until February 6. Thank you for your participation!

In today’s Gospel John the Baptist says, “I am the voice of one crying in the desert; make straight the way of the Lord.” As we prepare for Christmas let us ask for the grace to help others to know the love of the Lord. Christmas is a time of love and gift-giving. Please share your abundance by giving a gift to the Society of St. Vincent dePaul so that those who do not have clothes and food can share in the blessings of Christmas. Donations marked “St. Vincent de Paul” can be placed in the collection basket or in the Poor Box.

HOPE: AN IMMIGRANT STORY
“I was a stranger and you welcomed me...” (Matt 25:35)
Maria is a mother of four young children: ages 6, 4, 2 and an infant. While she was still pregnant with the infant, her husband, and father of her children, left on a Monday morning to work in the fields of Michigan. He never returned home that Friday. He had been detained for a very minor traffic offense. Despite his hard work, being in the United States for nine years and having four young children born in the U.S., he was deported before Maria could even locate him. Maria had no source of income, nowhere to turn, and so she turned to the Church.
Pastoral Migratoria provided assistance to pay rent and other necessary expenses. Also with the assistance of one of the priests at the church, they were able to find a place for her children at the parish school.
How could we accompany this family? Action: Join us at 7 a.m. Friday, December 16 at 101 W. Congress for the Posada Pilgrimage. For more information, contact Elena Segura in the Office for Immigrant Affairs and Immigration Education, 3525 S. Lake Park Ave., Chicago IL 60653 at esegura@archchicago.org or 312-534-5333.

ESPERANZA: UNA HISTORIA MIGRANTE
“Fuí forastero y ustedes me recibieron...” (Mateo 25:35)
Él nunca volvió a casa aquel viernes.

EXPLORING PRIESTHOOD WEEKEND “Make straight the way of the Lord.” In today’s Gospel John urges us to recognize the God that walks with us and calls us to serve him. How are you called to serve the Lord? Men of college-age and older are invited to an Exploring Priesthood Weekend (EPW) retreat to learn about, reflect on, and discuss with seminarians and priests the possibilities of diocesan priesthood in Chicago. The next EPW is January 13-15. To register contact Father Brian Welter at 312-534-8298 or bwelter@archchicago.org. See www.ChicagoPriest for more details.

MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER DATES SET “I am the voice of one crying in the desert, make straight the way of the Lord” (today’s Gospel). Are we taking time to put the way of the Lord in our marriage? SHARE OUR AMERICAN FREEDOMS In 2010, a total of 619,913 people who came to this country as immigrants swore the oath of allegiance and became U.S. Citizens. Requirements in this process include multiple applications, interviews and tests, in order to ensure that naturalized citizens have familiarity with American government and history, a working knowledge of the English language and good moral character.
The road to citizenship can be long and difficult. At Queen of Angels, a ministry exists to help our brothers and sisters who have begun this process and are studying for the interviews and examinations. Help is needed to lead these classes, which are offered free of charge as a service to the community.
Volunteers must be patient, caring and able to keep up on current events and changes in immigration regulations. Internet access, teaching skills, or competence in a foreign language can be helpful but are not necessary. Most important is a love of the United States and the freedoms that we enjoy, including the freedom to adopt this country as one’s own. Training is available from Deacon Ben Nieves, who has taught the class for 14 years.
U.S. Citizenship Classes are held from 6:30 p.m.to 8 p.m. on Wednesday evenings at the Parish Center. For more information, to volunteer or sign up for the class, please call the parish office at 773-539-7510.

WILL YOU ASSIST THE LYMAN FUND? On the first Sunday of each month, the collection includes the monthly Lyman Scholarship Fund. Use the green envelope provided in your envelope packet or place your donation in any envelope marked “Lyman Fund.” The next Lyman collection will be the weekend of December 3-4 but donations are accepted at any time. Helping a family in need continues the mission of our church. Thank you.

Our parish’s Guatemalan community recently hosted a reception and through their group efforts, donated $327.50 to the parish community. We thank them for their generosity and bless them for their efforts.

THE GOD WHO CREATES Creation is the sensible, concrete praise of Jesus to His Father outside the intimate life of the Trinity. Jesus is the living praise of the Father. All creation is but a reflection of the being of God and though outside the Trinity, it reproduces the interior movement within the Trinity.
In the choir of praise to the Father each creature translates the praise of the Son to the Father and thus reveals one aspect of God’s glory. Creation not only affirms the existence of God, it helps us to communicate with God in the mystery that He is. When we come together in our SPRED groups, we reflect on our life experiences and the world around us. We share those memories with one another in our SPRED community. We find that by taking time to look at Creation, of which we are all an integral part, it helps our SPRED friends penetrate the mystery of Christ and his revelation of the Father. All become aware of belonging to God’s family, the reflection of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Created by God we invite you to join one of our SPRED groups as a catechist -- a faith partner for one of our friends -- and discover this reflected movement of the Trinity in your own life.
For more information or to observe a SPRED session, please contact Julia Hess at the SPRED office by phone at 773-539-3634 or by e-mail at julia.spredcrw@sbcglobal.net.

FROM THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL In the Gospel today we hear the Beatitudes and we find the blessing of Jesus standing with those who are poor, hungry and weeping. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent dePaul was able to assist individuals and families who are struggling to meet their daily needs due to job losses, illness and injuries. Thank you!

STEWARDSHIP, CREATIVITY, WORK Many people think that a spiritual life is in conflict or in contradiction to a life in the world. For some spiritualities, that may be the case. In the community of discipleship of Jesus and in the connection with that community in the Church, there is no contradiction between a spiritual life and a life in the world. In fact, faith defines and strengthens believers’ connection with the world.
In John’s gospel, Jesus prays for his disciples. He anticipates his departure from the world and their continued presence in the world. He addresses his heavenly Father and says: I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one… As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth (John 17:15, 18-19).
A faith commitment lived out in the Church defines and strengthens believers’ relationship and connection to the world by giving believers a purpose or mission in the world. Believers are sent, as Jesus was sent. They exercise stewardship or responsibility for the world. This stewardship extends, of course, to the physical resources upon which we depend for sustaining life on this planet, our ecological responsibility. Beyond that, stewardship involves a responsibility for the specifically human ecology embedded in the political order and the quest for justice and peace.
Believers are also connected to the world by their sharing in the creative energy of the creator through their work for the world’s transformation. Again, this includes not only the physical dimensions of earthly existence but also the cultivation of art and beauty and the creation of a more humane world through work, the labor of our hands and minds.
In and through the Church as a community of faithful disciples of Jesus, believers find themselves more intensely connected and committed to the fate of the earth on which they dwell in all its physical and human dimensions.

CAN YOU HELP THE LYMAN FUND? Once a month, the collection includes the monthly Lyman Scholarship Fund. The Lyman Scholarship Fund was established to help families in need of assistance in making a tuition payment. We are united by our commitment to “the sharing of faith and knowledge,” as our Parish Mission Statement declares, even in the face of economic uncertainty and the costs of educating a child.
A growing number of families need assistance from the Lyman Fund. Your help is needed to make sure no child is denied an education at Queen of Angels School because a tuition payment is missed.
Use the green envelope provided in your envelope packet or place your donation in an envelope marked “Lyman Fund.” The Lyman collection is generally the first Sunday of the month but donations are accepted at any time. A collection will be taken Sunday, January 2, 2011. Helping a family in need continues the purpose of our church. Thank you for your generosity.
