The Revised Roman Missal

www.fortbelvoircatholiccommunity.comA “missal,” from the Latin word for “Mass,” is a book that contains the text (words) and rubrics (directions) for the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy. On Thanksgiving Weekend, the First Sunday of Advent, the Catholic Church in the United States will begin using the Revised Roman Missal with fresh texts for the Mass in English. This new translation has been many years in the making. It will more closely follow the words already in use for Mass in many different parts of the world, bringing us closer in union with the worldwide Church.

At Queen of Angels, there will be lots of help as we make this transition together. Please click the "Understanding the Revised Mass Texts" image in the sidebar or see the items below for some thoughts on the Mass and particular changes, a series which will appear each week in “The Guide” and here on our website.

  • The Introductory Rites
  • The Creed
  • The Eucharistic Prayer and Acclamations (coming soon!)
  • The Sign of Peace
  • The Closing Rites (coming soon!)

NORTH SIDE KAIROS FEATURED ON ARCHDIOCESAN BLOG
If you are a teen who attended Kairos either through North Side Kairos or through a Catholic high school, or a teen or parent wanting to know more about how this retreat can affect young lives, be sure to check out "KAIROS Retreats Helping Teenagers Grow in the Faith," the latest entry on the official blog for the Archdiocese of Chicago.

The North Side Kairos Retreat is a four-day retreat for North Side Chicago teens who have just completed their sophomore, junior or senior years of high school. On Kairos, you are invited to reflect on relationships with yourself, friends, family and God. The four days of Kairos are an opportunity to heal, rejoice, question, explore the Catholic faith, meet new people and have fun. The retreat began in 2000 with co-sponsorship from Queen of Angels and St. Matthias Parishes, St. Ignatius Parish in Rogers Park, and St. Nicholas Parish in Evanston.

NICODEMUS MINISTRY When a parishioner dies, the priest celebrates the Mass of Christian Burial. The final Prayers of Commendation at the cemetery are led by a lay person. Laity are urged to lead their brothers and sisters in prayer. It is a sign that when a parishioner dies, other members of the parish -- and not just the priest -- pray. Volunteers are needed to minister to grieving families. Follow the kindness of Nicodemus who, with Joseph of Arimathea, buried Jesus. Training provided. Call the parish office at 773-539-7510.

SHOP WITH THE ANGELS Target has joined the comprehensive list of retail gift certificates available through Shop With the Angels! Stop by the SWTA table before or after the 8 and 9:30 Masses on Sunday or call the Parish Center. You choose whether your profits go to the parish, the Lyman Scholarship Fund or towards a specific school tuition account. Stop by and order from a growing variety of retail gift cards.

SATURDAY ROSARY Looking to take some time for prayer in your Saturdays? Join us to pray the Rosary after each 9 a.m. Saturday Mass. To volunteer to lead, call Joann at 773-583-1371.

REMEMBER YOUR LOVED ONES Intentions may be offered at weekday, holy day or weekend Mass in the name of friends or relatives, living or deceased, for those in need of extra prayers or in honor of a beloved saint. Birthdays and anniversaries are great times to remember loved ones through the prayers of the Mass. Suggested donation is $10 per Mass. Visit or call the parish office at 773-539-7510.

INTENCIONES DE MISAS Para pedir una intención especial para una misa en inglés o español, por favor visite el Centro Parroquial. La donación sugerida es de $10 por misa. Llame a la oficina al 773-539-3176.

FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Every Friday, the Blessed Sacrament is placed out for veneration and prayer from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. To reach the Adoration Chapel, enter the church through the Claremont door, walk up the stairs, turn to the left and then to the left again. Walk down the passage behind the altar and enter the former baptistery where the Eucharist is exposed for veneration. Help us keep vigil with the Lord by making some time on Fridays for these beautiful moments of prayer. This is a wonderful way to feel closer to God. Visitors are asked to register in the sign-in book in the chapel when attending.

The Saints of October – Our Catholic Identity

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD
October is a month filled with the feast days of remarkable saints of the Church. Saints are men and women raised up by the Church (canonized) as examples of the way to Christ. We unite ourselves to the saints by imitating them, honoring their memory with our prayers confident that they bring our prayers to the Lord Jesus. Here are three October saints and how their lives have formed our identity as Catholics.

October 1- St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus
Saint_terese
She entered the Carmelite Order at a young age and never left her monastery after that. In the monastery she embraced the monotony of life and the simplest tasks as ways of gaining her own self by giving her self for others. She said she had two purposes in life, “to save souls and to pray for priests.” Soon after entering the convent she began the painful road of tuberculosis. Shortly before her death she said, “I would not suffer less.” Whatever she did, she placed herself in union with the whole church around the world and believed that even in her littleness she was part of the Church everywhere. Because of this expansive faith, she is one of the patron saints of missions and missionaries. She died at age 24 in 1897. Theresa’s gift of Catholic identity to us is that no action done in love is too small to being grace. All of us are missionaries even if we never travel far.

FAITH & FOOD—Combating Rural Poverty While Nourishing Ourselves and Those in Need

farm

Wouldn’t it be great to support a struggling family farmer while receiving local, fresh produce and family farm-raised meat for your family? Well, you can. In cooperation with the Heifer Project, (773) 279-9696, Queen of Angels Parish is participating in an initiative to nourish ourselves and those in need while supporting local farmers who steward the earth around us.

farmers_market

With the “Faith and Food” initiative, the Heifer Project works with local congregations to develop markets for meat and produce from small, local family farms. Many of these family farmers have struggled to make a living from their land. Supported by education and grants from Heifer, some farmers have made a transition to sustainable, organic farming, raising food without harmful agricultural chemicals, synthetic growth hormones or antibiotics.

chicken

One group of such family farms supported by Heifer is the Pembroke Farming Family. This group of small landholders is in one of the most economically depressed townships in Illinois. Supported by Heifer, the Pembroke farm families are working to increase their household income and home consumption of healthy food through expansion and diversification of livestock on the family farm. Currently formed of 12 African-American families, this project seeks to add three new types of livestock per family and to increase their knowledge base in environmentally sound livestock care, nutrition and management. These families were unable to afford to maintain their land without selling direct to consumers. This allows them to farm as opposed to collect state money or leave their farms for jobs in town. Also among their goals are to develop a cooperative direct marketing venture for vegetables and meat and a federally-inspected licensed processing facility and to reach out to the youth with organic and sustainable farming trainings with the goal of reducing the flight of the youth to the city.

The Heifer Project and Queen of Angels Parish are participating in this initiative because it meets our goals of combating hunger and poverty by helping rural families support themselves through agriculture. Others supporting this initiative include the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, the Chicago Community Trust, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.

By participating in “Faith and Food” Queen of Angels parishioners and interested neighbors in Ravenswood can purchase meat in a monthly order or purchase weekly "shares" of locally grown seasonal produce for themselves and their families.

wheelbarrow

How does it work? The meat that is produced by these Heifer-sponsored farms is raised without hormones or antibiotics and the animals live a life outdoors in pastures, not in confinement facilities. The prices are comparable to store-bought meat, and the meat is frozen for shipment. If you are interested in purchasing meat from a Heifer-sponsored farm, you can choose what meat you and your family would like each month. A monthly shipment will then be delivered to the church.

If you are interested in produce, you or your family can purchase a 12-week share of organic produce for around $350. This covers the cost of one 3/4 bushel box of produce. This is equivalent to about 1-1/2 regular paper grocery sacks full, typically enough vegetables for the week for five people. Individuals and families who need smaller amounts can purchase half shares or split a box with another individual or family.

Beginning in early August the shares of produce will be delivered to our church once a week. Families then pick up their shares on the day of delivery.

Do you want to sign up or learn more? There are two ways you can learn more. First, contact Cliff McIntosh at 773-278-7625 to discuss participating in the Faith and Food initiative at Queen of Angels. Even better, Heifer-supported farmers in the Peoria area will host a tour from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 12. If you are interested in meeting farmers who are participating in this program, you can contact Gary Kuneen of Seven Generations Ahead at 708-660-9909. You can also contact Sundee Wislow at Heifer directly at (773) 279-9696.

An added benefit. Through the “Faith and Food” initiative, parishioners can also help nourish pregnant teens, low- income families, people infected with HIV and other Chicagoans in need by helping to purchase shares of food to be donated to organizations such as:

--New Moms, Inc. – a Chicago organization that provides education and opportunity for adolescent mothers and their children to gain self-confidence, dignity and hope essential to their self-sufficiency and family stability.

--The Inspiration Café – an Uptown not-for-profit organization that provides restaurant-style meals, housing, job-training, case management and other services to homeless men and women in a therapeutic community of dignity and respect.

To learn more about Faith and Food or to join other parishioners in supporting this simple approach to nourishing ourselves and those in need while supporting local farmers, contact Cliff McIntosh at 773-278-7625.

Queen of Angels Featured as Anchor Institution in Lincoln Square

Here's an excerpt from “Lincoln Square Live”, an article in Chicago Magazine's April 2004 issue:

Lincoln Square’s blend of the tried and the trendy is anchored at its southern end by four institutions. The 19-year-old Sulzer Regional Library (4455 North Lincoln Ave.; 312-744-7616) was designed by Hammond, Beeby and Babka, the same firm that produced downtown’s Harold Washington Library Center in 1993. A quick trip inside reveals the 1922 oval bas-relief of Abraham Lincoln rescued from a neighborhood façade (it’s along the stairway leading to the second floor) and the large lobby painting of Sulzer himself, nattily clad and following the passing parade with a steely blue gaze.

rose_window_detail.jpg

Detail of rose window

Outside the library, the gray spire of Queen of Angels Church (2230 West Sunnyside Ave.; 773-539-7510) beckons, and here again, a peek inside – to glimpse the six colorful angels hovering above the nave or the stained-glass windows depicting events from the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary – pays off. Across the street, Welles Park (2333 W. Sunnyside; 312-742-7511) is a people magnet, with its playgrounds, baseball diamonds, horseshoe pits, and indoor pool. This sports mecca doubles as a cultural gathering place, staging concerts and outdoor movies around a graceful two-year-old gazebo (go to www.ward47.com for more information) and hosting the annual Folk & Roots Festival presented by the Old Town School of Folk Music (held this year July 9-11).
