A REFLECTION FROM THE SSVD Today as we celebrate the feast of the Ascension we are reminded that Christ’s saving work on earth continues through his disciples... and now through us. When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace and joy into our hearts, into our lives and into the hearts of those who are poor. Interested in making service to the poor part of your spiritual life? Join the members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at our monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 9 in the Upper Voss Center.

CLW ENDS FOR THE SEASON Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLW) will end for the season today, Sunday, June 5 during the 9:30 a.m. Mass. It will resume in the fall. If you are interested in becoming one of the adults who make this possible for our youngest parishioners, please contact Al Ferolie at 773-283-9428 or albertferolie@ferolielaw.com. Please continue to bring your children to church during the summer months. As we know, parents are the best example for children.

COFFEE, JUICE, DONUT? IT MUST BE SUNDAY! Would you care for some coffee, some juice or perhaps a donut? If you attend the Parish Social following the 9:30 a.m. Mass on Sundays, you’ve come to the right place. Are you able to bring baked goods or fruit on any given Sunday? If so, please call the Parish Center and leave your name and phone number. Queen of Angels is always ready for a social gathering so let’s keep the tradition going. Beverages will be provided on Sundays. To lend a hand to these post-Mass socials, contact parishioner Walter Rucker at walt501@juno.com or call the Parish Center at 773-539-7510.

CHILDREN’S RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Queen of Angels offers Religious Education (CCD) classes for children in Kindergarten through Eighth Grade not attending a Catholic school. We welcome school-age children seeking a closer connection with God and understanding of the Catholic faith. The program is designed for continuous faith formation from one year to the next, including preparation for First Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation. Registration for the 2011-2012 school year is now open, and registration fees will increase on July 1. To register, e-mail parish@queenofangelschicago.org or call 773-769-4986 ext. 23.

NOT TOO LATE FOR JANE’S EGG BASKET If you picked up an egg from Jane’s Egg Basket, please return your donations to the Parish Center. If you have any larger, gently used items, please contact Patti Corbitt at 773-450-4978 to make arrangements for pick-up. Every item and every penny collected will go to help local needy moms, kids and families through the Women’s Center of Greater Chicagoland and the Teen ProGRESS teen parenting program of Ravenswood Evangelical Covenant Church. Thank you from the Respect Life Committee and the Society of St. Vincent dePaul.

NICODEMUS MINISTRY When a parishioner dies, the priest celebrates the Mass of Christian Burial. The final Prayers of Commendation at the cemetery are led by a lay person. Laity are urged to lead their brothers and sisters in prayer. It is a sign that when a parishioner dies, other members of the parish —- and not just the priest —- pray. Volunteers are needed to minister to grieving families. Follow the kindness of Nicodemus who, with Joseph of Arimathea, buried Jesus. Training provided. Call the parish office at 773-539-7510.

Children's Liturgy of the Word

9:30 CHILDREN’S LITURGY RETURNS!
Following its summer hiatus, the Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLW) will return to the 9:30 a.m. Mass next Sunday, September 26. As part of Sunday Mass, these liturgies are an opportunity for children to hear the readings and prayers of the Mass in words that are familiar to them. CLW is designed for  children ages 3 through early primary grades. Young children and their catechists have a great time together sharing prayer and reflection on the Sunday readings.

The experience created at the Children’s Liturgy parallels that of all the faithful worshipping at Mass each week. Children are blessed by the priest before the First Reading, walk together downstairs to the Children’s Liturgy chapel space, and return upstairs to their families later in the Mass. The reunion of families in time for the consecration and Communion is a sign of the union of the Church in this holy sacrament.

Volunteers are needed; materials are provided. Please consider this opportunity to guide our young ones and lead them closer to the Lord. Contact Albert Ferolie at 773-283-9428 or albertferolie@ferolielaw.com.

FUND TO HELP FAMILIES IN NEED DEPLETED Once a month, the collection includes the regular weekly offering and the monthly Lyman Scholarship Fund. The Lyman Scholarship Fund was established to help families in need of assistance in making a tuition payment. The school is a very important part of our parish’s mission.
Contributing to the scholarship fund in someone’s name is a wonderful way to remember a loved one. Your generosity will help continue the mission of Queen of Angels in providing a quality Catholic education.
A record number of families benefited from the Lyman Fund last school year, depleting the fund. An even larger number of families this year are seeking assistance. Your help is needed to make sure no child is denied an education at Queen of Angels School because a tuition payment is missed.
Please be as generous as you can. Use the green envelope provided in your envelope pack or simply place your donation in an envelope marked “Lyman Fund.” The Lyman collection is generally the first Sunday of the month but donations are accepted at any time. Helping a family in need continues the mission of our church. The next Lyman Scholarship Fund collection will be Sunday, February 7. Thank you for your generosity and sacrifice.

MEN’S CLUB HOOPS CONTINUES ON THURSDAY Men of the parish are invited to the weekly session of Men’s Club Hoops at 9 p.m. Thursdays in the Guild Hall Gym. Donation is $10 weekly plus an annual Men’s Club membership of $15. Join a bunch of 30-, 40-, 50- and 60-year olds trying to make it up and down the court for a couple hours each week. A liability waiver must be signed prior to lacing up the sneakers. Concessions are served immediately after the grueling play, along with lively discussions around our 62” HDTV!
Men’s Club also meets on the third Thursday of each month at 8 p.m. in the Voss Center. Join us for pizza and beer. There is a $5 donation per meeting. Men’s Club Hoops follows each meeting. Men’s Club events include the Fall Golf Outing, Family Gym Nights, high school scholarship funding, gym improvements, Annual Membership Dinner and the St. Paddy’s Day Party. For more information, call Pat McQuillan at 773-575-4483.

FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Every Friday, the Blessed Sacrament is placed out for veneration and prayer from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. To reach the Adoration Chapel, enter the church through the Claremont door, walk up the stairs, turn to the left and then to the left again. Walk down the passage behind the altar and enter the former baptistery where the Eucharist is exposed for veneration.
At some time during the day, stop by the chapel for some quiet time with the Lord. Help us keep vigil with the Lord by making time on Fridays for these beautiful moments of prayer.
Bring your thoughts and your bible, rosary, and books, or use the prayer resources in the adoration chapel. Spend some time with Jesus in the form of the Blessed Sacrament. Visitors are asked to register attendance in the sign-in book in the chapel when attending Adoration. You may sign up for a particular hour of prayer every week. Call Christine Murphy at 773-561-9072.

CHOIR CD AVAILABLE It’s not too late to get a copy of the new CD, O Magnum Mysterium, featuring the Queen of Angels choirs. The CD features favorite carols and choir anthems of the Christmas Season. The cost is $20. Proceeds support the Music Ministry at Queen of Angels. The CD can be purchased through the Parish Center. Call 773-539-7510.

CHECK OUT MARKET DAY Looking for convenience and high quality in food choices for your family? Market Day fits the bill and helps Queen of Angels School, too! Pick up a Market Day order form in church or school or check out the Market Day website at www.marketday.com to see more than 200 restaurant quality food items. Order deadline is noon, Wednesday, January 27 on the internet. Pick-up is 9:15 a.m. Saturday, January 30 at the Guild Hall Gym. Willing to help? Have questions? Call Nancy at 773-539-7510.

SATURDAY ROSARY Join us to pray the Rosary after each 9 a.m. Saturday Mass. To volunteer to lead the Rosary, contact Joann at 773-583-1371 or green3256@yahoo.com.

NICODEMUS MINISTRY When a parishioner dies, the priest celebrates the Mass of Christian Burial. The final Prayers of Commendation at the cemetery are led by a lay person. Laity are urged to lead their brothers and sisters in prayer. It is a sign that when a parishioner dies, other members of the parish—and not just the priest—pray. Volunteers are needed to minister to grieving families. Follow the kindness of Nicodemus who, with Joseph of Arimathea, buried Jesus. Training is provided. Call 773-539-7510.

Announcements, Week of December 27, 2009

CATHOLICS COME HOME If you’ve been away from the Church, we welcome you and invite you to take a look at all our parish has to offer. See our representative in church at all the weekend Masses or call 773-539-7510. Welcome home!

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Are you willing to set aside time for a worthwhile evening? In SPRED, adult friends with developmental disabilities are partnered with a volunteer catechist. When we meet with our friends we provide a place of peace to help them discover a sense of personal dignity and develop a spirit of prayer. We spend some time working on activities which settle us and help us to focus on the present. We then retire to the Holy Room, our mini chapel, where we share life stories; listen to the Word of Our Lord; sing and enjoy calming music; and share joyfully in the restful silence. We close our session with a simple sharing of food and fellowship – called Agape. We talk and laugh and enjoy the companionship of each other.
Sessions have a calming and renewing influence on all of us as they deepen our awareness of God’s presence and love in our lives. This wonderful opportunity is offered only 24 evenings a year. You will be delighted with what we have to offer for you as you give yourself to one of our very special friends.
To find out more about SPRED, call Joann Salas at 773-583-1371 or Julia Hess in the SPRED office at 773-539-3634. Thank you so much.
—- Mary Murray, a most satisfied volunteer catechist

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD The 9:30 Sunday liturgies offer an opportunity for children to hear the readings and prayers of the Mass in words that are familiar to them. The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is designed for children ages 3 through early primary grades. Volunteers are needed for this ministry. Training and materials are provided. Please consider this opportunity to guide our young ones. For more information, or to volunteer, contact Albert Ferolie at 773-283-9428.

CHOIR CD AVAILABLE It’s not too late to get a copy of the new Christmas CD, O Magnum Mysterium, featuring the Queen of Angels choirs. The CD features favorite carols and choir anthems of the Christmas Season. The cost is $20. Proceeds support the Music Ministry at Queen of Angels. The CD can be purchased through the parish office. Call 773-539-7510.

DO YOU FEEL CALLED TO THE DEACON FORMATION PROGRAM? A deacon is a man who is called by God to a ministry of service. With bishops and priests, the deacon receives the Sacrament of Holy Orders. He is an ordained minister, who may be married and have children. He is living in the lifestyle of the laity. Permanent Deacons are called to a three-fold ministry of service — of the Word, and Charity and Justice and to live out their life in service to Jesus and their brothers and sisters in Christ. Do you believe Jesus may be inviting you to inquire about this ordained ministry? If so, your first step is having a heart-to-heart conversation with your family and Fr. Jim. Review the website at www.usml.edu (select Ministry Formation, then Deacon Formation). Contact Deacon Jim Cozzo, Jr. at 847-837-4563 or at jcozzo@usml.edu and request a pre-application form. The Deacon Formation Program of the Archdiocese of Chicago meets at the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

Guidelines For Children's Liturgy of the Word

Children’s Liturgy of the Word at the 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Masses has been a gift to the Parish and to the families who participate in it. Dedicated catechists lead this age-appropriate time for children to understand the Sunday Scriptures. As with any education program for children, there are a few guidelines.

* Children from ages four through fifth grade only may participate. Three-year-olds and younger cannot participate in the materials used. By the time a child completes fifth grade and enters sixth grade, they should be more attuned to the Mass and can volunteer to be either a Mass server or to assist younger children at the Children’s Liturgy of the Word.

Catechists Needed for 11 M Children's Liturgy of the Word

The future of Children’s Liturgy of the Word at the 11 a.m. Mass is in question. At least three additional catechists are needed for this or we may only be able to offer this liturgy once or twice a month—or discontinue it completely.

What does an adult catechist leader do? The catechist leads the children to the Lower Church. Using age-appropriate translations and resources, the catechist reads the Sunday Gospel, explains it to the children and leads them in a reflection on it as the children view it. An offering for those in need is taken, children are given a worksheet for home use and the children are then returned to the Upper Church for the remainder of the Mass.

Are you interested? Can you help? You do not have to be a Scripture scholar to lead this ministry. A readiness and willingness to explain God’s word is the only qualification required. Orientation and materials are provided. Call Father O’Brien at 773-539-7510 or Deborah Beien at 773-989-9860 to help maintain this vital ministry.
