FAMILY-FUN PB & J PARTY! The Commons Community Service Team is holding its first monthly PB & J Party of the year with the after-care students on Wednesday, August 31. You are welcome to join us in making PB&J sandwiches and assembling sack lunches for the homeless and elderly guests of St. Teresa’s Loaves and Fishes Program. We have jobs for toddlers through adults. Kids love pitching in while learning to help others. And what do we do with any leftover sandwiches? Yep, we eat them! This event is in the school cafeteria from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Please direct questions to Donna Czech at 771-271-0377 or donna_czech@yahoo.com; or contact Lisa Krappman at lisa@krappman.com or 773-442-8747.

COLLECTION THROUGH LABOR DAY Needed are travel– and individual-sized toiletries for the Franciscan Outreach Ministry, which runs one of the largest case management programs and shelters for the homeless in Chicago. Larger-sized toiletries are also being collected for Girls and Boys Town, a transitional teen shelter in the Back-of-the-Yards neighborhood. A collection basket is in the Gathering Space at church; donations can also be brought to the Parish Center.

A REFLECTION FROM SSVD... Today we hear Jesus say to us, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” The challenge is to let go so God can lead us. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent dePaul enabled the poor to experience Jesus’ presence by assisting 11 families by providing furniture, special shoes and baby items, $1,050 for housing bills and referrals to needed services. With your help this month, we provided school supplies and backpacks to dozens of children at the start of the school year.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL BOX GONE For many years there has been a St. Vincent DePaul donation box in the parish parking lot. Due to recent problems, the box has been removed. An alternative way for parishioners to help meet the needs of the poor is being considered by the Queen of Angels Conference of the Society of St. Vincent dePaul. Please be respectful of this decision and do not leave anything in the parking lot. Until this situation is resolved, please take your donations elsewhere.

FIRST TARGET, NOW WHOLE FOODS! Whole Foods has joined the Shop With the Angels lineup. For a variety of retail gift cards, stop by the Shop With The Angels table before or after the 8 and 9:30 Masses on Sunday or call the Parish Center at 773-539-7510. Whole Foods cards are available in $25 and $100 denominations.

NICODEMUS MINISTRY When a parishioner dies, the priest celebrates the Mass of Christian Burial. The final Prayers of Commendation at the cemetery are led by a lay person. It is a sign that when a parishioner dies, other members of the parish -— and not just the priest —- pray. Volunteers are needed to minister to grieving families. Follow the kindness of Nicodemus who, with Joseph of Arimathea, buried Jesus.

GALA OF THE ARTS PLANNED The 10th Annual Gala of the Arts will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, September 9 in the Grand Ballroom of Navy Pier. The recent stars of Chicago’s Jersey Boys will perform. The evening features an art show and sale, featuring 16 artists. A portion of the proceeds raised at the Gala will support Catholic Charities’ Emergency Assistance Programs which provide food, shelter, clothing and short-term financial assistance. Reservations begin at $250. Contact Ashley Owen at 312-655-7912.

JANE’S EGG BASKET Our Respect Life Committee and Society of St. Vincent DePaul are hosting the “Jane’s Egg Basket” drive again this year to support the work of the Women’s Center and the teen Parenting ProGRESS outreach at Ravenswood Evangelical Covenant Church. If you picked up a plastic Easter egg from the Jane’s Egg Basket table on Palm Sunday or Easter Sunday, don’t forget to shop for and bring back the donation suggested to you. Please return the requested item(s) to the church gathering space on the next two weekends, May 7-8 and May 14-15.

CHILDREN’S RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Queen of Angels offers Religious Education (CCD) classes for children in Kindergarten through Eighth Grade not attending a Catholic school. We welcome school-age children seeking a closer connection with God and understanding of the Catholic faith. The program is designed for continuous faith formation from one year to the next, and it includes preparation for First Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation. Registration for the 2011-2012 school year is now open, and family registration fees will increase on July 1. To register, please call 773-769-4986 ext. 23.

ELECTIONS FOR ALL BOARDS The School Board, Athletic Board and Commons will follow the same communications, nominations and election processes to solicit and elect new members for each of their boards. The school invites you to consider running for one of several leadership roles that are opening up for election. There are four positions opening on the School Board, six board positions on the Athletic Board and two officer positions open for Commons. Sharing your time and talents with Queen of Angels is a wonderful way to help make the school the best it can be. All candidates must attend at least one meeting of School Board or Athletic Board prior to election. Contact Mrs. Kelly, school principal, at 773-769-4211.

A REFLECTION FROM THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL In the Gospel today, Jesus stands in our midst and says: “Peace be with you!” During Mass we turn to each other and say, “Peace be with you!” As you put your gift into the St. Vincent dePaul box at the top of the stairs, you say “Peace be with you!” to those who are poor and hungry.

TRACK-A-THON SCHEDULED The All School Track-a-Thon will be this Wednesday, May 4. This event is a major fundraiser for our school. Students get sponsorships for running laps in the Guild Hall Gym. THE APOSTLES WORKED MANY WONDERS
“I came to Catholic Charities when I was near death… both from drinking and from an infection I was too far gone to address,” says Brian, a former client in our substance abuse program. “I had no money for insurance, but Catholic Charities accepted me.” Brian’s counselor, a seasoned professional, worked wonders with Brian, who had resisted help from other sources. Somehow, she was able to get through to him. Today, Brian has a radio show where he spreads the “good news” of his recovery to help and inspire others. Your gift to the Catholic Charities Collection on Mother’s Day helps us give critical support to people fighting addiction, particularly the uninsured.

LETTER FROM CARDINAL GEORGE:
CATHOLIC CHARITIES MOTHER’S DAY APPEAL NEXT WEEK

The Season of Easter is a season of hope. This year, the Catholic Charities Collection on Mother’s Day very appropriately occurs during this holy season. The life, death and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ won for us the gifts of salvation and hope. On Mother’s Day, we celebrate the life-giving love and devotion of the heroic women who modeled and passed on to us the gifts of hope and faith.

During the Season of Easter, the readings reiterate themes of the new life that is ours in the Risen Christ. As Catholics, we are people of hope who share this gift with our brothers and sisters of all faiths, especially those who are in need. For 93 years, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago has restored hope to poor or struggling families and individuals, because hope is what matters most to a homeless family with a parent out of work, or a senior on a limited income who lives alone.

Last year, more than a million people of all ages, races and religions received services through Catholic Charities’ 159 programs at 156 sites in Cook and Lake Counties. Seniors, parents and children, pregnant and parenting teens, and hungry and homeless families and individuals come to Catholic Charities hoping to find the basic necessities to maintain life: food, clothing, housing, parenting skills and a renewed sense of dignity. They find professional and compassionate help to ease their anxiety, work their way out of poverty, build healthy family relationships, and solve the problems that keep them from independence and financial self-sufficiency.

From conception to natural death, Catholic Charities strives to maintain the dignity and respect to which every human being is entitled. As our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI stated in his encyclical letter on Christian hope, Spe Salvi: “The one who has hope lives differently; the one who hopes has been granted the gift of a new life.” Thank you for your continued gift of hope, your charity and your willingness to open your hearts in prayerful and practical support of the poor and vulnerable with your gift to the Catholic Charities Collection on Mother’s Day.

May Mary, the Mother of Jesus and of the Church, and her Divine Son bless you and your families with hope, peace and joy as you celebrate Mother’s Day and the Easter Season. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
— Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago

-- Cardenal Francis George, O.M.I., Arzobispo de Chicago

2011 ARCHDIOCESAN ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL BEGINS
Please respond generously to Cardinal George’s Letter
The theme of the 2011 Annual Catholic Appeal is “… seek first the kingdom of God…” (Matthew 6:33). Jesus taught that we are not to worry about the things of this world. Rather, we are to seek the kingdom of God and the Father will reward us. God provides all that we have and all that we are. Stewardship, in part, is the recognition of God’s gifts and the obligation to return a significant portion of our gifts to assist in his work. Our gifts to our parish, to our Archdiocese and the Church throughout the world are given in gratitude for what God has given to us. A gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal helps to provide education, services, and ministry to thousands within and outside of our Archdiocese.
The Appeal supports parish ministries that provide religious education to children, youth and adults in economically disadvantaged communities. It is one of the largest philanthropic sources of financial support for Catholic schools in the Archdiocese. The Appeal funds services that are of great help to the ministries here at Queen of Angels.
Also, when our parish reaches its goal in paid pledges, 100 percent of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our parish. Please prayerfully consider a pledge to the 2011 Annual Catholic Appeal.

TARGET JOINS SWTA LINE UP Target has joined the list of gift certificates available through Shop With the Angels! Stop by the SWTA table before or after the 8 and 9:30 Masses on Sunday or call the Parish Center. You choose whether your profits go to the parish, the Lyman Scholarship Fund or towards a specific school tuition account. Stop by and order from a growing variety of retail gift cards.

Walk down the passage behind the altar and enter the former baptistery where the Eucharist is exposed for veneration. Help us keep vigil with the Lord by making some time on Fridays for these beautiful moments of prayer. This is a wonderful way to feel closer to God. Visitors are asked to register in the sign-in book in the chapel when attending Adoration.

HOPE, RESPONSIBILITY, TRUST The Church as a community of faith necessarily connects us with our spiritual destiny, our future in God. We long for future fulfillment and so we pray, as Jesus taught us, “thy kingdom come.” We pray the Eucharist, and Saint Paul tells us: “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes” (1 Corinthians 11:26). And with Paul we anticipate the great things that God will bring about: “…creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the children of God” (Romans 8:19).
In a world with few signs of genuine, deep-rooted hope, we as Jesus’ disciples lean into the future. We find hope in God’s promise, which has already begun to take hold of this world in Jesus Christ. This hope, however, is not wishful thinking, because believers take responsibility for collaborating and cooperating with God in making a way for the coming of God’s kingdom. In the end, our fundamental connection with the future is trust and surrender into God.
When others desperately cling to possessions and their very own lives in an attempt to survive into the future, believers are free to let go of all things and surrender themselves into the hands of God. Their connection to this world, to their lives, to whatever they hold dear—all this does not bind them. The great community of faith connects us with a promised and assured future, and so we find our freedom to love and to trust God. Ours is a blessed assurance concerning the future: “We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).
People of faith connect with the future not in fear and trepidation but full of hope, in genuine responsibility, and in loving trust.

Volunteers are needed to minister to grieving families. Follow the kindness of Nicodemus who, with Joseph of Arimathea, buried Jesus. Training provided. Call the parish office at 773-539-7510.

2011 ARCHDIOCESAN ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL BEGINS SOON
“...seek first the kingdom of God...” (Matthew 6:33)
Many of our parishioners either have or soon will receive a mailing from Cardinal George. He will ask that you make a pledge to the 2011 Annual Catholic Appeal. Please respond generously.
The Appeal supports parish ministries that provide religious education to children, youth and adults in economically disadvantaged communities. It is also
one of the largest philanthropic sources of financial support for Catholic schools in the Archdiocese. The Appeal also funds services that are of great help to other ministries here in our parish.
This year, the theme of the Appeal is “...seek first the kingdom of God…” (Matthew 6:33).
Our gifts to the parish, to our Archdiocese and the Church throughout the world are given in gratitude for what God has given us. A gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal helps to provide education, services and ministry to thousands within and outside of our Archdiocese.
When our parish reaches its goal in paid pledges, 100 percent of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our parish. We benefitted greatly from the Appeal in 2010 when we were offered a matching grant for all monies over our goal. If you have not yet completed your pledge, please do so. The work at Queen of Angels continues and needs support. Also, please prayerfully consider making a pledge to the 2011 Annual Catholic Appeal.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN SPRED Are you willing to set aside time for a worthwhile evening? In SPRED, adult friends with developmental disabilities are partnered with a volunteer catechist. When we meet with our friends we provide a place of peace to help them discover a sense of personal dignity and develop a spirit of prayer. We spend some time working on activities which settle us and help us to focus on the present. We then retire to the Holy Room, our mini chapel, where we share life stories; listen to the Word of Our Lord; sing and enjoy calming music; and share joyfully in the restful silence. We close our session with a simple sharing of food and fellowship – called Agape. We talk and enjoy the companionship of each other. Sessions have a calming and renewing influence on us as they deepen our awareness of God’s presence and love in our lives. This opportunity is offered only 24 evenings a year. You will be delighted with what we have to offer for you as you give yourself to one of our very special friends. Call Joann Salas at 773-583-1371 or Julia Hess in the SPRED office at 773-539-3634.

Catholic Charities Update on Hurricane Katrina Victims

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago has provided emergency assistance to 450 evacuees who have come to Chicago in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Because Catholic Charities has eight emergency assistance centers in Chicago and its suburbs, the agency was able to begin assisting evacuees as soon as they reached the Chicagoland area.

Catholic Charities has provided shelter to 250 individuals—47 families— both in traditional shelters that we were able to prepare with the help of parishes and volunteers and in apartments that many parishes in the Archdiocese helped sponsor. These individuals have received food, clothing, shelter, counseling and financial assistance from the agency as have another 200 evacuees who came to live with family members in Chicago but came to Catholic Charities in need of other emergency help.

Catholic Charities has received $110,000 through the generosity of donors. It is estimated another $500,000 has been collected by archdiocesan parishes.

Catholic Charities is still in need of funds, gift cards, food and winter coats for our evacuees, who will have ongoing needs in the coming months. To donate, call Catholic Charities’ Disaster Relief Donation Hotline at 312-655-7174. The hotline is update daily to inform donors of evacuees most pressing needs.
