SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEK
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Although Latin America is home to the largest number of Catholics in the world, the Church is experiencing an alarming decline in membership, for a variety of complex reasons. The unstable global economy has played a part, as has a low priest-to-parishioner ratio that makes it difficult to teach the faith and make the sacraments available in a consistent matter. Additionally, migration across the region has ruptured the bonds of family and community in which the Catholic faith is supported and passed down from generation to generation.
This year’s Collection for the Church in Latin America will be directed towards a comprehensive evangelization effort, as well as towards the formation of seminarians, catechists, and lay ministers in more than 200 dioceses. So many are attuned to alleviating material poverty, which is of course necessary and a part of the Church’s efforts anywhere she is present. However, as Mother Teresa once pointed out, life without God is a much greater poverty than any material deprivation.
Through your generous support of this collection, you will help the Church to rebuild her strong presence in Latin America. Your contribution will ensure that millions of people can come to experience the Lord’s love in the sacraments and in strong local parish communities.
I am grateful for all you do to support your local parish, as well as the Church in other parts of the world. May God, who is never outdone in generosity, bless you and your loved ones in this New Year.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
-- Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago

-- Cardenal Francis George, O.M.I., Arzobispo de Chicago

MASS FOR KATHY COLE On November 22, 2009, SPRED friend and Queen of Angels parishioner Kathy Cole passed away. Her life will be celebrated at the 9 a.m. Mass Saturday, January 16, 2010.
Perhaps you were unable to attend the funeral or did not hear of her passing. Perhaps you were present at the funeral but welcome another opportunity to share the beauty of Kathy’s life. Whatever the reason, please attend this memorial Mass for our friend, Kathy Cole.

A PRAYER FOR OUR PRIESTS As the Church celebrates the Year of the Priest through June 19, 2010, let us pause during the week to give thanks and remember Fr. Jim Kaczorowski and Fr. John Griffiths for all they do to make God alive at Queen of Angels Parish.
Almighty God, in your love
You bless your Church with priests,
A sign of your faithfulness to your people.
May our prayerful encouragement,
During this year and years to come,
Help them remain faithful to the calling
They have received from you.
As they tend your flock, grant them a caring heart.
In them may we know the voice of Christ,
Our Good Shepherd, who lives and reigns
With you and the Holy Spirit,
One God forever and ever. Amen.

GREAT THINGS AT SCHOOL
There are great things happening at Queen of Angels School. This recent letter from Joan Franklin Smutny of National-Louis University provides affirmation of the strides being made in gifted education.
Dear Mrs. Kelly,
Thank you for the opportunity to bring gifted to Queen of Angels. May I share with you a few insights about your school? Queen of Angels is an extraordinary place for students, teachers and staff. Your leadership has effected an academic excellence and creativity that pervade the school. I have delighted in my association as I continue to bring activities and materials to the teachers and students.
Queen of Angels clearly expresses an excellence in the classroom and in the kinds of challenges given to students. It offers a distinct vision for advancing and enhancing all the children. They are highly motivated to succeed and so are the teachers.
May I especially thank you for initiating and implementing a quality of thought and atmosphere that is so consistently affirmative. Children and young people thrive in a milieu that enables them to move forward positively as individuals and as learners.
Creativity is the highest form of mental functioning. Queen of Angels embodies and imparts that quality. Creativity is inherent in meeting perceptively the needs of bright, talented children and all children. It is my privilege to be supportive of your school’s forward steps in effecting this result.
Very sincerely, -- Joan Franklin Smutny, Director of the Center for Gifted, National-Louis University

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Are you willing to set aside time for a worthwhile evening? In SPRED, adult friends with developmental disabilities are partnered with a volunteer catechist. When we meet with our friends we provide a place of peace to help them discover a sense of personal dignity and develop a spirit of prayer. We spend some time working on activities which settle us and help us to focus on the present. We then retire to the Holy Room, our mini chapel, where we share life stories; listen to the Word of Our Lord; sing and enjoy calming music; and share joyfully in the restful silence. We close our session with a simple sharing of food and fellowship -- called Agape. We talk and laugh and enjoy the companionship of each other.
Sessions have a calming and renewing influence on all of us as they deepen our awareness of God’s presence and love in our lives. This wonderful opportunity is offered only 24 evenings a year. You will be delighted with what we have to offer for you as you give yourself to one of our very special friends.
To find out more about SPRED, call Joann Salas at 773- 583-1371 or Julia Hess at the SPRED Office, 773-539-3634. Thank you so much, -- Mary Murray, a most satisfied volunteer catechist

RELIGIOUS RETIREMENT COLLECTION
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The annual Retirement Fund for Religious Appeal has provided much needed assistance to women and men religious who have spent their lives serving our church and our world. They ministered in our schools, hospitals, parishes and charitable agencies, asking for little in return. They invested, not in pension plans, but in people, in service and in the future of the Church they served.
The people of the Archdiocese of Chicago have always responded very generously to this yearly appeal, contributing over $1 million last year alone. In these challenging economic times, I ask you to simply give what you can. I am very proud of your willingness to share in the care of our aging women and men religious.
I thank you for your support of this appeal and ask you to keep our religious sisters, brothers and priests in your thoughts and in your prayers. In our often troubled world, they remain a visible sign of Christ’s love. During this Advent season, when we prepare for the birth of Christ, I ask you to remember the love of those who taught us all about our Catholic faith: the men and women religious who served our Archdiocese.
May God bless you and your loved ones.
Sincerely yours in Christ,  -- Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago

FUND TO HELP FAMILIES IN NEED Once a month, the collection includes the regular weekly offering and the monthly Lyman Scholarship Fund. The Lyman Scholarship Fund was established to help families in need of assistance in making a tuition payment. And the school is a very important part of our parish’s mission.
Contributing to the scholarship fund in someone’s name is a wonderful way to remember a loved one. Your generosity will help continue the mission of Queen of Angels in providing a quality Catholic education.
A record number of families benefited from the Lyman Fund last school year, depleting the fund. And an even larger number of families this year are seeking assistance. Your help is needed to make sure no child is denied an education at Queen of Angels School.
Please be as generous as you can. Use the green envelope provided in your envelope pack or simply place your donation in an envelope marked “Lyman Fund.” The Lyman collection is generally the first Sunday of the month but donations are accepted at any time. Helping a family in need ensures the future of our church. The next Lyman Scholarship Fund collection will be next Sunday, December 6.
Thank you for your generosity and sacrifice.

Seminaries Collection

Gracias.

Fraternalmente suyo en Cristo, Cardenal Francis George, OMI Arzobispo de Chicago

SEMINARIES COLLECTION Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Next weekend we again celebrate Seminary Sunday in all the parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. In fact, we celebrate the lives of the many priests who serve you so faithfully each day and those who are preparing to serve you with that same charity in the future. The love of a priest for his people makes present Christ’s love for His Church.

The seminary is the place where the vocation to the priesthood is nourished and grown. Pope Benedict XVI, in a message to seminarians at World Youth Day in 2005, captures the essence of what we celebrate this Seminary Sunday:

“Dear friends, this is the mystery of God’s call, the mystery of vocation. It is part of the life of every Christian, but it is particularly evident in those whom Christ asks to leave everything in order to follow him more closely. The seminarian experiences the beauty of that call in a moment of grace which could be defined as ‘falling in love.’ His soul is filled with amazement, which makes him ask in prayer: ‘Lord, why me?’ But love knows no ‘why’; it is a free gift to which one responds with the gift of self.

“The seminary years are a time of journeying, of exploration, but above all of discovering Christ. It is only when a young man has had a personal experience of Christ that he can truly understand the Lord’s will and consequently his own vocation. The better you know Jesus the more his mystery attracts you. The more you discover him, the more you are moved to seek him. This is a movement of the spirit which lasts throughout life, and which makes the seminary a time of immense promise, a true ‘springtime.’”

As our seminarians spend years in formation and discernment, I thank you for your financial contributions which provide them with the environment to “prepare well” to serve God’s faithful for years to come. I ask you to pray for them and for those whom God is now calling to the ordained priesthood from among our families and friends.

Finally, I pray that God will continue to bestow on you and your families His choicest blessings for your generosity to the seminarians. You are in my prayers, and I ask you to remember me and our Archdiocese in your prayers each day. Thank you.

Gratefully yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, OMI Archbishop of Chicago

LETTER FROM THE CARDINAL

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In the midst of a lengthy political campaign, matters of public policy that are also moral issues sometimes are misrepresented or are presented in a partial or manipulative fashion. While everyone could be expected to know the Church’s position on the immorality of abortion and the role of law in protecting unborn children, it seems some profess not to know it and others, even in the Church, dispute it. Since this teaching has recently been falsely presented, the following clarification may be helpful.

The Catholic Church, from its first dates, condemned the aborting of unborn children as gravely sinful. Not only Scripture’s teaching about God’s protection of life in the womb (consider the prophets and the psalms and the Gospel stories about John the Baptist and Jesus himself in Mary’s womb) but also the first century catechism (the Didache or Teaching of the Twelve Apostles) said: “You shall not slay the child by abortions. You shall not kill what is generated.” The teaching of the Church was clear in a Roman Empire that permitted abortion. This same teaching has been constantly reiterated in every place and time up to Vatican II, which condemned abortion as a “heinous crime.” This is true today and will be so tomorrow. Any other comments, by politicians, professors, pundits or the occasional priest, are erroneous and cannot be proposed in good faith.

This teaching has consequences for those charged with caring for the common good, those who hold public office. The unborn child, who is alive and is a member of the human family, cannot defend himself or herself. Good law defends the defenseless. Our present laws permit unborn children to be privately killed. Laws that place unborn children outside the protection of law destroy both the children killed and the common good, which is the controlling principle of Catholic social teaching. One cannot favor the legal status quo on abortion and also be working for the common good.

This explains why the abortion issue will not disappear and why it is central to the Church’s teaching on a just social order. The Church does not endorse candidates for office, but she does teach the principles according to which Catholics should form their social consciences. The teaching, which covers intrinsic evils such as abortion and many other issues that are matters of prudential judgment, could not be clearer; the practice often falls short because we are all sinners. There is no room for self-righteousness in Catholic moral teaching.

All of us should keep our country and all the candidates for office in the next election in our prayers. God bless you and your families. Sincerely yours in Christ, +Francis Cardinal George, OMI Archbishop of Chicago

CHRIST OUR HOPE Dear Brothers and Sister in Christ,

Each year the annual Peter’s Pence Collection in support of the works of the Holy Father is held in parishes throughout the world. The proceeds from this collection fund emergency relief assistance to those who suffer from war, oppression, disease and natural disaster. Through works of charity, Catholics stand in solidarity with the weak, the defenseless, and the voiceless, and they sustain those who suffer.

The theme for this year’s collection echoes that of the Holy Father’s apostolic journey to the United States in April 2008—Christ Our Hope. The theme reflects the message of Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical Spe Salvi: an invitation for people to encounter Jesus Christ personally. In the encyclical, Pope Benedict said that faith in Christ brings well-founded hope in eternal salvation, the “great hope” that can sustain people through the trials of this world.

As we participate in this special appeal, we join Catholics worldwide in a loving expression of solidarity. We share in the concern of the successor of Peter for the many different needs of the universal Church and for the relief of those most in need around the globe.

This year, the collection in our diocese is scheduled for the weekend of June 28-29.

I ask you to consider contributing to the collection this year, and I am grateful for your generosity. Together let us ask the Lord to bless the Holy Father and us, as well as those in need throughout the world.

Sincerely yours in Christ, +Francis Cardinal George Archbishop of Chicago

Sinceramente suyo en Cristo, Cardenal Francis George, O.M.I. Arzobispo de Chicago

CARDINAL ADDRESSES GIFT OF CATHOLIC CHARITIES Dear Friends in Christ,

On this Feast of Pentecost, we celebrate the love of God poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. We also celebrate Mother’s Day and gratefully honor our mothers and all women who, in their magnanimous love, have shared the gift of life with their children.

There are many ministries in the Church and many gifts of the Spirit that manifest God’s love. The gift of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago is to “hear the cry of the poor” and reach out to heal Christ’s body through compassionate service to those in need.

From generation to generation, for more than 90 years, Catholic Charities has cared with the love of a mother for poor and vulnerable families, children, seniors and hungry and homeless people. Last year, Catholic Charities in Cook and Lake counties touched the lives of 1.1 million people in need—of all generations, faiths, ethnic and racial backgrounds.

Over the past year, Catholic Charities nurtured 2,235 children in caring child development centers; provided nutritious food for tens of thousands of infants, children and pregnant mothers in low-income neighborhoods; provided maternity and adoption services; and counseled hundreds of pregnant and parenting teens.

How else is Catholic Charities caring for the vulnerable? Homeless families suffering from a lack of affordable housing, education or job skills are healed and strengthened by emergency services or comprehensive, long-term family self-sufficiency programs that assure a future of hope for thousands of mothers and children each year. The dignity and independence of elderly people are advanced at Catholic Charities’ twenty affordable senior residences, at senior and adult day care centers, and through in-home care and meal services.

The mothers helped by Catholic Charities are young and old, married and single, healthy and in need of healing, and Catholic Charities cares for each one with respect and compassion. Trusting in the spirit of God who binds the Church together in the unity of charity, I ask you today to offer what you can to assist Catholic Charities in its mission of charity to the next generation of mothers and children.

May Mary, Mother of the Church, bless your generosity to this appeal. On this Mother’s Day, you and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago

Peter's Pence Collection Next Week

Let us make sure that none of God’s children ever feels alone. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Each year, the annual Peter’s Pence Collection, in support of the works of the Holy Father, is held in parishes throughout the world. The proceeds from this Collection fund emergency relief assistance to those who suffer from war, oppression, disease and natural disasters. Through works of charity, Catholics provide a powerful witness of love and deeds to empower the weak, the defenseless, and the voiceless, and to sustain those who suffer.

The theme for this year’s collection is Let us make sure that none of God’s children ever feels alone. The theme is based on a September 2006 homily given by Pope Benedict XVI, in which he explained how those who are baptized create one family of believers who are never alone.

As we participate in this special appeal, we join more than one billion Catholics worldwide in a loving expression of solidarity. We share in the concern of the successor of Peter for the many different needs of the universal Church and for the relief of those most in need around the globe.
