A CHANCE TO WELOME THOSE WHO HAVE DRIFTED AWAY Perhaps you have heard of the massive outreach to Catholics who have drifted away from the Church. The Archdiocese of Chicago along with the Diocese of Rockford and the Diocese of Joliet are undertaking an evangelization initiative – Catholics Come Home – that invites our sisters and brothers back to the practice of the faith.
This evangelization initiative began this week and will continue through the end of January. Over 2,000 television ads will air on the major area networks in English, Spanish and Polish. These ads encourage those who have drifted away to come back home.
There are 20 million Catholics in the USA who no longer practice the faith or do so sporadically. This is in addition to the 70 million Catholics who are more active. In fact, if one takes the number of those who have drifted away, it adds to the second largest religion in the USA, practicing Catholics being the first. Amazing, isn’t it, that so many have drifted away? We need to invite our brothers and sisters to join us!
The ads airing on television are the first step – inviting – in this evangelization initiative. The other two overlapping steps are welcoming and accompanying. The site www.CatholicsComeHomeCHICAGO.org will help you with additional information.
While ads might help, nothing is more effective than a personal invitation. Invite someone you know to come back home to the Catholic Church. And to anyone reading this bulletin article that is returning to the Church this Christmas season, welcome! Check out the website!

¡Necesitamos invitar a nuestros hermanos y hermanas a unirse a nosotros!

"Welcoming Guests with Joy"

BUILDING ON 100 YEARS OF SHARING AND CARING
One of my favorite Advent hymns is the carol “People, Look East,” which begins:

People, look East. The time is near
Of the crowning of the year.
Make your house fair as you are able,
Trim the hearth and set the table.
People, look East, and sing today:
Love the Guest is on the way.

This bouncy, singable carol speaks to me of the preparations we make in our homes for the coming of Christmas. We put up seasonal decorations such as trees, candles, stockings and wreaths; we prepare to welcome guests by sending invitations, setting out our “good china” and making sure our homes look at their best. Our parish makes similar preparations in the church: the Advent wreath is lit, poinsettias are ordered, the Nativity scene is taken out of storage, the candlesticks are polished and the floors are waxed and shined.

And then we welcome our guests. We greet them at the door of our homes, take their coats, graciously accept their thanks and encourage them: “Please, make yourself at home,” or: “My house is your house.” We listen to what’s been happening in their lives and tell them something about our own. We linger over food and warm drinks; we might sing Christmas carols together or look at photographs and talk about the past. We take great pleasure in giving or receiving “the perfect gift.” Before our guests head home, we make plans with them to get together again very soon.

This Advent, the parishes of the Archdiocese of Chicago will make a unified effort to repeat this welcoming ritual in our churches through a program called Catholics Come Home. This initiative will invite Catholics who have been away from the Church to come back to their faith. Catholics Come Home commercials will air on network TV stations between December 16, 2009 and January 24, 2010. These commercials offer an invitation to those who have been away from the Church to “take another look” and see all that the Catholic faith has to offer. I have shown some of these commercials to our Confirmation candidates and the catechists in our CCD and Confirmation programs. The feedback given by these groups is that the commercials are both welcoming to those who have been away and thought-provoking for all Catholics.

Many preparations have been made for Catholics Come Home. A website has been set up at www.CatholicsComeHomeCHICAGO.org with resources and information. Parishes are asked to make printed materials available in the church and parish office.

However, if this effort is to be a success, it will also need a human touch – it will need us as parishioners of Queen of Angels to reach out in welcome and to be good hosts for the guests we welcome this Advent.

CENTENNIAL SOCK DRIVE THANK YOU
Dear Friends of Queen of Angels,
Thank you for your generous donation of six bags of men’s, women’s and children’s socks to Franciscan Outreach Association for our guests at out emergency overnight shelter, the Franciscan House of Mary & Joseph. Your support makes it possible for us to provide the sustenance that our guests need. We strive to be a consistent, positive presence in the community and in our guests’ lives. We want them to know that they can count on us to support them as they engage in the hard work of improving their lives. Because of wonderful, giving friends like yourself, organizations like ours that depend on donations to help the poor and homeless of Chicago are able to do so. Thank you again for sharing and caring about our guests and us. May God continue to bless you and your loved ones for all the good works you do.
Sincerely, -- Diana J. Faust, S.F.O., Executive Director

SUNG VESPERS ADVENT SERVICE
5:30 p.m. Sunday, December 13
Featuring John Rutter’s Dancing Day
Elizabeth said to Mary: Blessed are you because you have believed!
“You also are blessed because you have heard and believed. A soul that believes both conceives and brings forth the Word of God... Let her spirit be in each [of us] to rejoice in the Lord. Christ has only one mother in the flesh, but we all bring forth Christ in faith.” -- Saint Ambrose of Milan
“Therefore, Advent is... the time of hope, in which believers in Christ are invited to remain in vigilant and active expectation, nourished by prayer and by a concrete commitment of love.” -- Pope Benedict XVI
Come and be nourished by prayer this Advent with the choirs of Queen of Angels, our pastor, friends and fellow parishioners through an evening of reflection as we joyfully await the coming of our Lord, Jesus. A festive fellowship reception will follow.
Childcare will be provided but it is necessary to contact the Parish Center at 773-539-7510 or parish@queenofangelschicago.org to make reservations for the number and ages of children.

REFUGEE HOUSEWARMING A SUCCESS The Commons Community Service team wants to thank everyone who donated to the Exodus project and all those who volunteered. We were able to assemble full welcome packs for three refugee families and collected many additional items. The volunteers made five fleece blankets, ten packets full of Chicago information, and twenty painted pots for additional families. Special thanks go to our coordinators, Lisa Krappman, Laurel McCaleb, Eileen Moran, and Anne Wicker. Thanks again for your generosity, Queen of Angels!

Almighty God, in your love
You bless your Church with priests,
A sign of your faithfulness to your people.
May our prayerful encouragement,
During this year and years to come,
Help them remain faithful to the calling
They have received from you.
As they tend your flock,
grant them a caring heart.
In them may we know the voice of Christ,
Our Good Shepherd, who lives and reigns
With you and the Holy Spirit,
One God forever and ever. Amen.

SUNG VESPERS ADVENT SERVICE
Featuring John Rutter’s Dancing Day
“In her concern for our salvation, our loving mother the Church uses this holy season of Advent to teach us through hymns, canticles and other forms of expression, of voice or ritual, used by the Holy Spirit. She shows us how grateful we should be for so great a blessing, and how to gain its benefit: our hearts should be as much prepared for the coming of Christ as if he were still to come into this world. The same lesson is given us for our imitation by the words and example of the holy men of the Old Testament.” — St. Charles Borromeo
From ancient times the Church has had the custom of celebrating each day the Liturgy of the Hours. Vespers is the great and important prayer of the evening. Come join the choirs of Queen of Angels at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, December 13 for this rich and sacred form of prayer as we anticipate together the coming of our Lord, Jesus. A fellowship reception will follow. Childcare will be provided.

Stop by the Parish Center during the week or at the table in the Gathering Space after the 8 and 9:30 a.m. Masses. Use SWTA to meet your holiday shopping needs. Profits can go to the parish, Lyman Fund or a school tuition account. Thanks for your interest!

WE CAN ALL GIVE TO IGIVE.COM Sign up on www.iGive.com, designate Queen of Angels as your cause and your online purchases lead to rebates to benefit Queen of Angels Parish — at no cost to you! Simply register and any time you shop online, an iGive.com logo appears to remind you a portion of your purchase price is automatically kicked back to the parish. And with several hundred stores registered, this is the easiest way to make a difference. Many gift cards purchased through Shop with the Angels are also valid through iGive.com, meaning the rebated amount to the parish can double!
