TRAIN AS A LECTOR OR COMMUNION MINISTER
If you have been Confirmed and are a practicing Catholic, you are eligible to serve as an Extraordinary Minister of Communion or a Lector at Queen of Angels. Teens and adults are needed to serve as liturgical ministers at Masses.
Lectors read aloud the First and Second Readings or Prayers of the Faithful, and Extraordinary Ministers of Communion help distribute Holy Communion. As you think about these ministries, consider that you will get back as much as you give. As you prepare to proclaim a reading, the Word of God will become more intimately a part of your life, and as you share the Eucharist you will begin to see Jesus more clearly in the people you welcome to the table of the Lord.
A training session is available for each type of ministry, and each session lasts just a few hours. Only after you have received training will you be asked if you want to make a commitment to the ministry. If you say yes, you will then get a chance to set your schedule. You may serve as a Lector or Minister of Communion once a month, or more or less frequently — you decide. You can also see what Mass time you want and what times of year to serve.
If you are interested in exploring these ministries, reserve your spot at a training session by contacting Jim Hohner at jimhohner@sbcglobal.net or by reaching Rachel Hohner at rhohner@queenofangelschicago.org or at the Parish Center 773-539-7510. .Attending separate trainings for each type of service is necessary if you want to check out both ministries.
Not only is Lector training a spiritual opportunity for you to learn more about the Scriptures, but you will have a chance to develop as a public speaker. Communion Ministers are able to share Jesus with others by welcoming them to the table of the Lord.
We especially call teens and young adults to get involved in these ministries. Exercise your rights to participate as an adult in the liturgy as a Confirmed Catholic. Renew your Confirmation commitment to God by serving God's people as a liturgical minister.
