Thank you to all who supported the Night Ministry through our Santa Shoppe charity sale and who contacted legislators about protecting quality care in nursing homes. Please continue to pray for those in nursing homes and for the people suffering in Syria. Please note that our St. Vincent de Paul clothing donation box has been relocated to the St. Matthias parking lot.
NURSING HOME CARE UPDATE
At the end of Masses on the weekend of March 3 and 4, parishioners were asked to contact legislators in Springfield about the need for direct care by Registered Nurses in Illinois nursing homes. Higher percentages of care from R.N. staff mean a higher quality of life for our seniors in assisted living facilities. Legislative committee members from the north side of Chicago and nearby suburbs who were to vote on R.N. staff levels in Illinois nursing homes were asked to vote for 20% R.N. care. Many, many thanks for all parishioners' prayers and for their phone calls to legislators. A large group of seniors went with JASC by train to Springfield to observe the vote March 6. The legislators then postponed the vote until April 17! So we will keep working, and we ask you to keep praying. -- Patricia Drennan, parishioner, and the Jane Addams Senior Caucus
SANTA SHOPPE THANK YOU
The Commons Community Service Team organized a sale of tea and hot chocolate mix, with the proceeds benefitting The Night Ministry. Volunteer children, teens and parents from the parish and school helped assemble the gift packages in the Lower Voss and the items were sold at the school’s Santa Shoppe.
Thank you for the donation and wonderful card. Please extend my thanks to all of the students who participated in the hot chocolate sale. It was a wonderful idea and the packages looked really neat. We will make sure that the donation is put to good use, to help those on the streets. Thanks, students! — Paul Hamann, President, The Night Ministry
REMINDER: SSVD BOX RELOCATED
Due to problems with the St. Vincent dePaul donation box, it was removed from the Queen of Angels parking lot in August. The box has been relocated to the parking lot at St. Matthias Parish, 4934 N. Claremont. Your donations of clothing, shoes and small household items help the Society of St. Vincent DePaul to meet the needs of the poor in our community. The Parish Center can no longer accept items meant for the St. Vincent dePaul box. Please take any items you wish to donate to the box in the St. Matthias parking lot. Thank you and God bless.
PRAY FOR THE PEOPLE OF SYRIA
In response to the humanitarian crisis in Syria, Cardinal George is asking the faithful of the archdiocese to pray for the suffering people of Syria. These members of our human family who are hungry, injured and dying are our global neighbors whom Jesus taught us to love. Like the Holy Family who fled to Egypt, thousands of Syrians have left their homeland as refugees from violence. In addition to prayer, Cardinal George encourages Catholics to donate to the Catholic Near East Welfare Association which provides aid to Syria. To give, visit www.cnewa.org or mail checks to the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, 1011 First Avenue, New York, NY 10022-4195. Mark donations for Syrian relief. The Archdiocese of Chicago made a donation to the Syrian American Medical Society whose president, Dr. Zaher Sahloul, is chair of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago, an interfaith partner of the archdiocese.
