The Girl Scout organization has implemented a new program called Journeys. Journeys provide an important foundation for each level in Girl Scouting for girls and volunteers and have been created to provide meaningful experiences centered on the three keys to leadership for all girls.
The Journeys program engages girls in discovering self, connecting with others, and taking action to make the world a better place. Discover, Connect, and Take Action are the three keys to Leadership. Discover: Girls understand themselves and their values and use their knowledge and skills to explore the world. Connect: Girls care about, inspire, and team with others locally and globally. Take Action: Girls act to make the world a better place.
In Girl Scouting, Discover + Connect + Take Action = Leadership.
The end result for Daisy Troop 20034 was planting flowers in the parish parking lot. For Brownie Troop 20092 the journey concluded with the making of pillows for an orphanage. The journey for Junior Troop 21397 concluded by making stepping stones for the church garden, planted on the corner of Sunnyside and Claremont. For all journeys, the girls played an active role in planning and decision making leading up to the completion of their particular Journey.
Troop 20221, a combined Cadette, Senior and Ambassador troop, did various service projects throughout the year. They coordinated the pinwheel peace project, a supply drive for the Anti-Cruelty Society, helped with a charity event, helped at Harvest Jam and other projects. As the girls move up through the different levels in the program, more work is involved to earn their respective awards. In the spirit of celebrating the 100th year anniversary of Queen of Angels parish, please let us know if a parish organization has a project where Girl Scouts can assist (we are talented in many aspects)!
Special thanks to school principal Mrs. Julia Kelly for allowing the Daisies to plant flowers; Shelley Lewis for supervising the making of the stones; Jane Bishop Lillegard and Laura Cwikowski for facilitating the end result; and Fr. Jim for sponsoring the group.
