WELCOME, IXALYS! On December 15, our Spanish Choir Director Maria Valdes gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Ixalys Vargas. Ixalys weighed in at a whopping 8 pounds, 5 ounces and was 22 inches long. Congratulations Maria, Danny, Xavier, and Anissa on the new addition to your family!
CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA Next weekend at all Masses a second collection will be taken for the Church in Latin America. Your gift helps fellow Catholics in Latin America and the Caribbean who are rich in spirit—but lacking in material resources—to participate more fully in the life of the Church.
Collection proceeds support training for seminarians and religious men and women; pastoral care of the sick; formation for lay leaders; family and youth ministries; and religious education for all age groups.
For more information, please visit www.usccb.org/ latinamerica. Thank you for your generosity and continuing prayers for our brothers and sisters in faith.
DRIVER NEEDED FOR SPRED SPRED is looking for a driver. Our Wednesday evening SPRED community has a disabled friend who needs transportation to and from our SPRED sessions. This would require driving a woman in her 30s from her home at Kimball and Eastwood to the Voss Parish Center at 4412 N. Western and back home. She has no physical disability and is independent. Hours are from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, with one exception noted. The remaining dates for the current SPRED year are: February 4; February 18; March 4; special session on Thursday, March 19; April 1; April 29; and May 13. If you can help, please contact Joann Salas at 773-583-1371 or jasnetworks@myibocs.com, or Julie Hess at 773-539-3634 or julia.spredcrw@sbcglobal.net. Your help is appreciated!
HAHN TO SPEAK AT OLL Our Lady of Lourdes Parish will host Dr. Scott Hahn for a day of talks Saturday, January 17 in the church at 4640 N. Ashland Ave. The program begins at 10 a.m., with topics Letter and Spirit and First Comes Love at 11:45 a.m., followed by Hail, Holy Queen at 2 p.m.
In Letter and Spirit, Hahn gives thoughtful exploration through the complex relationship between the Bible and the Catholic liturgy. First Comes Love uses the idea of family to explain Catholic thought about the Trinity by speaking of the divine reality in the relationship between the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Hail, Holy Queen focuses on why Mary, the Queen Mother, is an integral part of Christ’s kingdom. Suggested donation is $15.
Seating is limited so registration is necessary. Please register through Our Lady of Lourdes Rectory at 773-561-2141, email sarrenkos@gmail.com or visit www.ololchicago.parishesonline.com.
2008 DONATION STATEMENTS With 2008 behind us, it’s time to look ahead, or at least as far ahead as April 15. To assist you in declaring itemized deductions on your tax return, Queen of Angels can provide a list of your offerings made to the church during 2008.
Statements are available for registered parishioners who use contribution envelopes to give to the parish. Anonymous cash donations cannot be tracked and will not appear on statements. Statements will be available January, 31, 2009.
Request your statement by contacting the parish office at 773-539-7510 or parish@queenofangelschicago.org. We are trying to be more “green,” so we will not send you a statement unless you request one. We can also e-mail a PDF of your statement to you upon request. All you who are thirsty, come to the water! —Isaiah 55:1
GET INVOLVED WITH WINTER TOAST Queen of Angels’ largest annual fundraiser, Winter Toast, is fast approaching. Mark your calendar for an evening of good company for a great cause starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, February 21.
Winter Toast is almost as entertaining to work on as it is to attend, so please join us to put the “fun” in fundraising. We are currently looking for people to swell the ranks of our merry band of volunteers who will be asking for in-kind donations and getting the sponsorships that make Winter Toast possible.
All parishioners have a chance to leave a mark on our centennial’s Winter Toast. Maybe you or someone you know might have something to donate. Here are a few of the things we are seeking: -- Airline miles -- Bears, Bulls, Cubs, White Sox, Blackhawks, theatre, opera and symphony tickets -- Vacation homes, timeshares, hotel and water-park stays -- Golf foursomes -- Gift certificates -- Liquor, wine, beer, champagne -- Anyone with artistic, culinary, home repair, childcare, photography or musical talent
If you love our parish and have anything to donate, or if you would like to join in the Winter Toast fun, please contact the parish office at 773-539-7510 or parish@queenofangelschicago.org. Thanks, and see you at the party! — The Winter Toast Committee
EPIPHANY LESSONS AND CAROLS Parishioners gathered last Sunday afternoon to celebrate the continuing Christmas season with a program of Lessons and Carols hosted by our Music Ministry. The Choristers, Cherub Choir, Singers and Contemporary Choir led those gathered in many of their favorite carols, and members of the Music Ministry shared Scripture passages on light, God’s promises, and the birth of Jesus. Food and fellowship were shared at a reception after the last song was sung. Thank you, volunteers and staff of our Music Ministry, for keeping the joy of Christmas going!
