NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD:
In today’s gospel reading from St. Matthew, Jesus tells us a parable intended to help us understand the Kingdom of God. In the Parable of the Talents, a man, who is going on a journey, leaves his wealth in the care of his servants. He distributes his wealth among the servants, giving to each one a different amount. To one he gives five talents, to another two talents, and to another he gives one talent. Each is expected to invest the talents, each according to his ability, and to do something positive with them.
As in all of Jesus’ parables, this story is an illustration which is meant to teach us about the Kingdom of God and our relationship with Our Lord and one another. In this case, it is God (the man going on the journey) who bestows talents on his servants (us). He bestows each of us with different talents and in different amounts. For instance, some people are able to draw, or sing, or write, and others cannot. Some people are good teachers, group leaders, counselors, and others are not. Some people are shy but are good companions and share their gifts one-on-one. Some people are good leaders by inspiring others, and others are good by lending a hand to the leaders. The list of talents goes on and on.
The two wise servants in the parable who take their money and attempt to make something of it by investing it are symbolic of those who try to discover their talents and develop them in life by using them to do good works and benefit others.
Then there is the one servant who does not invest his one talent and incurs the anger of his master because he digs a hole in the ground and hides it. One can only imagine why he felt it necessary to hide his master’s money. He may have been afraid because he feared his master has little confidence in him because he only got one talent while the others got more. Perhaps he did not appreciate the true value of his one talent and the possibilities that he had to make it multiply. I think that many people have reasons that they do not take the talents given them and develop them. Sometimes we are afraid to let our talents show because we are afraid that others might not appreciate them or find us lacking. They might even laugh and make fun of us, so we keep them inside. Sometimes others discourage us from developing our talents by putting us down or making us feel that we don’t really have talents. Some people just allow themselves to be too busy to think about using their talents for the good of others. And some people allow selfishness to prevent them from thinking about others. I believe that Jesus intends this last servant in the parable as a reminder that even if we feel we have few talents, they are still important and can be developed for the good of his Kingdom.
There is an old saying that is a bit cliché, but nevertheless is apropos here: “Our talents and gifts are God’s gift to us. What we do with them is our gift to God.” Many people erroneously think that they have nothing to offer, or that what they have to offer isn’t good enough. One of the beauties of God not giving each of us equal gifts is that we have to depend on others to help us in the ways that we are lacking. Whenever we are in need of help we will seek out someone who has the expertise or the training to help us. Conversely, we must be ready to help others when they come to us seeking our expertise.
Here in the parish we have to do this every day. We have many talented and dedicated people who help the parish carry out its mission of teaching the gospel. We have dedicated musicians, liturgists, artists, teachers, and organization leaders. We have ministers who visit the sick and help the needy of our area. We have ministers of communion and lectors, ushers, choir members, and liturgical artists to help us pray well. We have dedicated maintenance people, construction people, painters, and masons etc. who clean and repair the church. We have many dedicated parishioners who help organize parish functions, as well as dedicated office personnel who answer the phone, balance the books, pay the bills, make copies and do the myriad duties of the parish office each day. What makes our parish work is the talent of many people who join their talents together and help wherever they can.
The idea of working together to build the Kingdom of God is as important now as it was in the time of Jesus and the Apostles when they were laying the foundation of the Church. Each time someone chooses to not offer their talent to the community, it is diminished and some of the work of building God’s Kingdom is left undone. To build the Kingdom of God we must all encourage one another to work together in developing our talents.
The parable teaches us that each of us is important to God and that even though we may be like the servant with only one talent, we can offer it to help build something great.
May the Lord bless us in the centennial year of our parish and may we all come together to give thanks to God for our parish and work together to continue God’s good work here at Queen of Angels.

CON DIOS NADA ES IMPOSIBLE: “Los Talentos del Señor” En el evangelio de hoy de San Mateo, Jesús nos dice una parábola que nos enseña sobre el Reino de Dios. En la Parábola de los Talentos un hombre, quien va a salir de viaje, deja su riqueza en las manos de sus sirvientes. Distribuye sus talentos entre sus sirvientes dándole a cada uno una cantidad diferente. A uno le da cinco talentos, a otro le da dos, y a otro sólo uno. Se les espera a cada uno que inviertan sus talentos, cada uno según su habilidad, y hacer algo bueno con ellos.
Como todas las parábolas de Jesús, la historia es una ilustración que nos enseña sobre el Reino de Dios y nuestra relación con Nuestro Señor y con nuestro prójimo. En este caso, es Dios (el hombre que va de viaje) quien les da a sus sirvientes (nosotros) los talentos. Le da a cada uno diferentes talentos y en varias cantidades. Por ejemplo: algunas personas pueden dibujar, o cantar, o componer y otros no. Algunas personas son buenos maestros, líderes de grupos, consejeros y otros no. Algunas personas son tímidas pero son buenos compañeros y comparten sus dones con una persona a la vez. Otras personas son buenos líderes que inspiran a otros, y otros son buenos para ayudar a los líderes ayudándolos a llevar a cabo sus trabajos. La lista de talentos es muy larga.
Los dos sirvientes sabios que toman su dinero y tratan de hacer algo bueno con el son simbólicos de los que tratan de descubrir sus talentos y desarrollarlos por hacer buenas obras que benefician a otras personas.
Luego, hay el sirviente que no invierte su único talento y recibe la ira de su dueño porque entierra su talento en un hoyo. Sólo se puede imaginar porqué se sentía necesario esconder el dinero de su dueño. Quizá tenía miedo porque pensaba que su dueño le tenía poca confianza porque le dio sólo un talento mientras los otros recibieron más. Quizá no apreciaba el verdadero valor de su talento y las posibilidades que tenía para invertirlo y hacerlo multiplicarse. Creo que la gente tiene sus razones para no desarrollar sus talentos. A veces tenemos miedo de demostrar nuestros talentos porque pensamos que otros no los vayan a apreciar. Es posible que se rían y se burlan de nosotros. A veces otros nos tratan con desprecio y nos hacen sentir que no tenemos talentos. Algunas personas se permiten a estar demasiados ocupados y no tienen tiempo para usar sus talentos para el bien de la comunidad. Y otros dejan que el egoísmo los consuma y no piensan en otros. Creo que Jesús intenta que el tercer sirviente con un solo talento sirva para recordarnos que aún nos sintamos que tenemos pocos talentos es importante que usemos ese para el bien del Reino de Dios.
Hay un dicho que dice: “Nuestros talentos son el don de Dios para nosotros. Lo que hacemos con ellos es nuestro don para Dios.” Mucha gente piensa erróneamente que no tienen nada para ofrecer, o lo que tiene para ofrecer no vale. Dios da diferentes talentos a cada persona porque quiere que dependamos el uno del otro buscando en otros lo que no podemos hacer nosotros mismos. Cuando necesitamos ayuda buscamos a alguien que tenga la experiencia y el conocimiento para ayudarnos. También tenemos que estar listos para ayudar a otros cuando nos piden nuestra ayuda.
Aquí en la parroquia tenemos que hacer esto cada día. Tenemos mucha gente dedicada que nos ayuda en la misión de enseñar el evangelio. Tenemos músicos, liturgistas, artistas, maestros y líderes de organizaciones dedicados. Tenemos ministros que visitan a los enfermos y ayudan a los necesitados de nuestra área. Hay ministros de comunión y lectores, ujieres, miembros del coro y artistas litúrgicas para ayudarnos a orar. Hay personas que limpian y mantienen la iglesia tanto como constructores, pintores y masones que reparan los edificios. Tenemos muchos feligreses dedicados que ayudan a organizar funciones parroquiales, tanto como personas que trabajan en la oficina contestando el teléfono, balanceando los libros, pagando las cuentas, haciendo copias y otras miles de cosas de la oficina que hacen todos los días. Son los esfuerzos de muchas personas que usan sus talentos y habilidades que hace que nuestra parroquia funcione.
La idea de trabajar juntos para construir el Reino de Dios es tan importante ahora como era en los tiempos de Jesús y los Apóstoles cuando construían los cimientos de la Iglesia. Cada vez que alguien decide no ofrecer sus talentos a la comunidad, es disminuida y una parte del trabajo de Dios no se hace. Para construir el Reino de Dios tenemos que apoyarnos el uno al otro para desarrollar nuestros talentos.
Esta parábola nos enseña que cada uno de nosotros es importante en los ojos de Dios y aunque somos como el sirviente que sólo tenía un talento, lo podemos ofrecer para ayudar a construir algo grande.
Que el Señor bendiga nuestra parroquia en nuestro año centenario y que todos trabajemos juntos para dar gracias a Dios por nuestra parroquia y que trabajemos juntos para continuar el buen trabajo aquí en Reina de los Ángeles.
