NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD
The story of Jesus walking on the water that we heard in today’s Gospel reading is certainly one of the most well-known passages of the Bible. Jesus’ disciples find themselves in a precarious situation over which they have no control. The wind on the lake has caused large waves that are battering their boat, and to make the situation even scarier, they are surrounded by the darkness of night. At the moment that they are probably wondering if they will capsize and drown, they see Jesus coming toward them walking on the water. Seeing this seems to push the disciples over the edge of fear to terror. The scripture says that they cried out, “It is a ghost.”
It is Peter who takes a step in faith. He is not entirely sure that he is not seeing a ghost, but cries out faith, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” When he is acting by faith he is able to overcome his fear and walk on the water. However, when he sees that he is doing something that his experience tells him that he should not be able to do, he begins to doubt and sink.
As in all bible stories we must look for the application for our own lives. In this story we can compare our own lives to the rough seas and ourselves to the boat that is afloat. Life can often be like a large sea, sometimes calm and peaceful and at other times disrupted by difficulties and problems. During our moments of prayerful reflection we might ask ourselves what are the “waves” that cause the “sea” that is our live to become rough and toss us about. What are the things that cause us fear and anxiety and make us feel that things are beyond our control, as the disciples felt in the Gospel story?
The way that we respond to the fears and anxieties of our lives can be found in the person of Peter. Do we call out to Jesus as Peter did when he was afraid, or do we doubt the power of Jesus as Peter did when he found himself doing something that was not “normal”? In this story we are confronted with the question, do I believe in the power of my faith in Jesus to help me confront the difficulties and fears of my life with courage and conviction? Do I find truth in the teachings of Jesus that come to me through the Church? Do I believe in the power of prayer? Do I believe that Jesus has the power to calm the storms of my life? Or do I doubt the power of prayer? Do I doubt that faith in Jesus can make a difference in my life?
Once the disciples saw the power of Jesus to calm the sea and calm their fears they proclaimed their faith that Jesus was truly the Son of God.
The Church has used the symbolism of the ship on the sea as a symbol of itself throughout its history. Jesus founded the Church and left us the Sacraments and his Word to help us find strength and guidance through these most difficult and unsure times of our lives. Christ’s Church is like a boat that surrounds us and protects us during both the calm and the stormy times of our lives. The Church is also sometimes symbolized by an anchor. It is the anchor that gives stability to the ship on the water. It holds the ship in place while the waves try to carry it away. Here at Queen of Angels we see this use of nautical symbols high on the main altar above the statues of Sts. Peter and Paul on either side of the large crucifix. There are both anchors and ships carved into the wood by the craftsmen who made our beautiful altar so many years ago. These symbols serve as a constant reminder of the importance of our faith in adding stability to our lives, if we believe in its power. These and other symbols are gifts to us in the beautiful architecture of our church. They are a great testimony to the faith of many of our own families and friends who taught us the faith. I invite you to approach the altar before or after mass to get a closer look at them.
Each time we gather in the church to celebrate the Eucharist, whether it be on Sunday or on a weekday, the Lord Jesus comes to us in the Blessed Sacrament just as he came to the disciples in the boat that day. Whenever we receive Communion, we can call out to Jesus as Peter did, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you...” As we receive the Lord in Communion, he calls to us in response, “Come!”
As we pray to the Lord throughout the ups and the downs of our lives, we pray that we may also come to declare as the disciples declared, “Truly, you are the Son of God!”

“Jesús Calma las Tormentas de la Vida” CON DIOS NADA ES IMPOSIBLE La historia de cuando Jesús camina encima del agua que oímos en el Evangelio de hoy es sin duda una de las mas bien conocidas de la Biblia. Los discípulos de Jesús se encuentran en una situación preocupante sobre la cual no tienen control. El viento ha creado unas olas grandes que están golpeando su barco y es noche. Al momento cuando temían hundirse y ahogarse ven a Jesús acercándose caminando sobre el agua. Al ver esto su miedo se convirtió en un pánico. Las escrituras nos dicen que gritaron, “Es un fantasma.”
Es Pedro que toma un brinco de fe. El no está completamente seguro de que no es un fantasma, pero llama con fe, “Señor, si eres tú, mándame ir a ti caminando sobre el agua.” Cuando actúa con fe puede superar su miedo y caminar sobre el agua. Pero cuando se entera que hace algo que según su experiencia no es algo que debe poder hacer, empieza a dudar y se hunde.
En todas las historias de la Biblia tenemos que buscar un lazo entre la historia y nuestra propia vida. En esta historia podemos comparar nuestras vidas al mar tormentoso y nosotros al barco que está a flote. La vida puede ser como un mar grande, a veces tranquilo y bello y a veces violento por las dificultades y problemas. Durante nuestros momentos de oración podemos preguntarnos que son “las olas” que hace que “el mar” que es nuestra vida a ser violento y golpearnos. ¿Cuáles son las cosas que nos causan miedo y ansiedad y nos hacen sentir que no tenemos control sobre ellas, como se sentían los discípulos de Jesús en el Evangelio de hoy?
La manera en que respondemos a los miedos y preocupaciones de la vida se puede encontrar en la perso- na de Pedro. ¿Llamamos a Jesús como hizo Pedro cuando tenía miedo, o dudamos el poder de Jesús cuando vio que hacía algo que no era “normal”? En esta historia se nos presenta la pregunta, ¿Creo en el poder de mi fe en Jesús a ayudarme a afrontar las dificultades y miedos de mi vida con fuerza y convicción? ¿Encuentro la verdad en las enseñanzas de Jesús que aprendo en la Iglesia? ¿Creo en el poder de la oración? ¿Creo que Jesús tiene el poder para calmar las tormentas de mi vida? O ¿Tengo dudas sobre el poder de la oración? ¿Dudo que la fe en Jesús pueda hacer una diferencia en mi vida?
Cuando los discípulos vieron el poder de Jesús de calmar el mar y calmar sus temores, ellos proclamaron su fe en que Jesús era verdaderamente el Hijo de Dios.
La Iglesia ha usado el simbolismo de un barco en el mar como símbolo de sí mismo por muchos siglos. Jesús fundó la Iglesia y nos dejó los Sacramentos y su Palabra para ayudar a hallar la fuerza y la luz en los momentos más difíciles de nuestras vidas. La Iglesia de Cristo es como un barco que nos envuelve y nos protege tanto durante los momentos tranquilos como los momentos tormentosos de la vida. También la Iglesia usa el símbolo de un ancla. Es el ancla que estabiliza el barco en el agua cuando las olas quieren llevarlo a la deriva. Aquí en Reina de los Ángeles se ve este simbolismo en el altar mayor arriba de las estatuas de Santos Pedro y Pablo en ambos lados del crucifijo. Hay anclas y barcos dibujados en la madera por los artesanos que hicieron el altar hace muchos años. Estos símbolos nos sirven como un recordatorio constante de la importancia de nuestra fe que nos puede estabilizar nuestra vida, si creemos en su poder. Estos y otros símbolos son regalos en la arquitectura bella de nuestra iglesia. Son un legado de las muchas personas que nos han enseñado la fe. Les invito a acercarse al altar antes o después de la misa para verlos más de cerca.
Cada vez que nos reunimos en la iglesia para celebrar la Eucaristía, el Señor Jesús nos viene en el Santísimo Sacramento tal como les vino a los discípulos en el barco esa noche. Cuando recibimos la Comunión podemos llamar a Jesús como Pedro, “Señor, si eres tú, mándame ir a ti...” Cuando recibimos al Señor en la Comunión el nos dice, “¡Ven!”
Cuando oramos al Señor esperamos poder proclamar como los discípulos, “Verdaderamente tú eres el Hijo de Dios.”
