NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD
A few weeks ago I was having a conversation with a friend about how one integrates faith into their everyday lives. In the course of the conversation the topic of The Golden Rule was mentioned. My friend said her early faith formation had revolved around this simple moral code, and asked me if I too had been taught it in school. She mentioned that she had not heard the term in many years. I had to agree in that I hadn’t heard the term used in many years. However, as I thought about it, it seems that even though the term “The Golden Rule” may not be used much these days, the concept is valid and deserves a bit of attention.
In our modern parlance “The Golden Rule” is “Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You” or “The Ethic of Reciprocity.” It is a simple code by which we Christians must live our faith. In Part 1 of this article, which appeared a few weeks ago in The Guide, Jesus illustrates this concept of “The Golden Rule” in his parable of the Good Samaritan. In the story there is a wounded man who is in need of care and attention because robbers had attacked him. Several people walk by and decide that they don’t want to get involved and help the wounded man. Their reasons for walking by and not helping are many. Perhaps one was just too busy to bother, perhaps another didn’t like to sight of the wounds of the man, or perhaps since the wounded man was unknown to those who passed by they did not feel an “obligation” to help him. It was the Samaritan who came by who truly acted like Christ. He was able to put aside his own agenda because he was able to imagine himself as the wounded man and imagined how it would feel to have everyone look at him and then walk on by. He goes out of his way to help the man by bringing him to an inn and paying for his care. His kindness doesn’t end there as he promises to stop at the inn on his way back and check in on the man.
Jesus presents us with this parable of the Good Samaritan in response to a question asked by a lawyer. The lawyer asks Jesus, “What must I do to attain eternal life?” Jesus answers, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” It is when the lawyer asks, “Who is my neighbor?” that Jesus presents him with the parable of the Good Samaritan. We all know what it feels like to be ignored and passed over when we want to someone to listen to us. We all know what it feels like to have a need and no one seems interested in helping. Jesus teaches us that the way to God is to reach out to others. He tells the lawyer in the parable to go and treat others in the same way as the Samaritan treated the wounded man.
The concept of The Golden Rule teaches us to reach out to others and “put ourselves in their shoes.” It forces us to look beyond ourselves and to see that there are others around us with whom we need to relate. That is exactly what Jesus did when he reached out to the poor, the sick, the disenfranchised, those who were rejected by society. He calls these people “blessed” by God.
In our modern society which tends to be more and more “Me” centered, we would do well to consider The Golden Rule. To be aware of others around us and to reach out to them teaches us a lot about ourselves and the love of God.
To practice The Golden Rule also helps us look inside of ourselves. It invites us to reflect on our own wounds, both physical and spiritual, and our need to be healed. Jesus, as the Good Samaritan, reaches out to all of us with His immeasurable love and seeks to heal us of our brokenness. We cannot reach out and help others as Jesus asks of us until we have first come to know God’s love ourselves. The gospel of the Good Samaritan invites us all to meditate on how God has touched us in the past and also on how we need to feel God’s loving touch now. If we can open ourselves to receive God’s healing power, then we are free to do as Jesus asks us in the gospels: “Go and do the same.” The Golden Rule can serve as a sort of “spiritual compass” pointing us in the direction of a closer relationship with God. By asking ourselves if we are treating others as we want to be treated we can know better if our actions are directed outward toward others, as Jesus commands us to do.

“La Regla de Oro, Segunda Parte ” CON DIOS NADA ES IMPOSIBLE
Hace unas semanas estaba platicando con una amiga acerca de cómo uno integra la fe en sus vidas diarias. Durante la conversación se mencionó el tema de la Regla de Oro. Mi amiga dijo que su formación temprana había girado alrededor de este simple código moral y me preguntó si yo también la había aprendido en la escuela. Ella mencionó que no había oído ese término en muchos años. Tuve que estar de acuerdo en que no había escuchado ese término en muchos años. Sin embargo, mientras pensaba en eso, parecía que aunque el término “La Regla de Oro” puede no ser usado mucho en estos días, el concepto es válido y merece un poco de atención.
En nuestro lenguaje moderno “La Regla de Oro” es “Haz por los otros lo que quisieras que hagan por ti” o “La Ética de Reciprocidad.” Es un código simple mediante el cual nosotros como cristianos debemos vivir nuestra fe. En la Parte 1 de este artículo, la cual apareció hace unas semanas en “La Guía” (The Guide), Jesús ilustra este concepto de “La Regla de Oro” en su parábola del Buen Samaritano. En la historia hay un hombre herido quien necesita cuidado y atención porque unos ladrones lo habían atacado. Varias personas pasan cerca de el y deciden que no quieren involucrarse y ayudar al hombre herido. Sus razones por pasar por ahí y no ayudarlo son muchas. Quizás una de ellas es que están muy ocupados para molestarse, quizás a otro no le gustó como se veían las heridas del hombre o tal vez como el hombre herido era un desconocido para aquellos que pasaban, ellos no sentían ninguna “obligación” de ayudarlo. Era el samaritano quien llegó que verdaderamente actuó como Cristo. El pudo poner a un lado su propia agenda porque el se podía imaginar a si mismo como el hombre herido y pensaba como se sentiría ver a la gente que lo miraba y seguían caminando. El se sale de su camino para ayudar al hombre llevándolo a una posada y pagando por su cuidado. Su gentileza no termina ahí y le promete llegar a la posada en su camino de regreso y ver como sigue.
Jesús nos presenta con esta parábola del Buen Samaritano en respuesta a una pregunta que hizo un abogado. El abogado le pregunta a Jesús, “¿Que debo hacer para tener vida eterna?” Jesús le responde, “Debes amar al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, con toda tu fuerza y con toda tu mente; y a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.” Es cuando el abogado pregunta “¿Quien es mi prójimo?” Entonces Jesús le presenta la parábola del Buen Samaritano.
Todo nosotros sabemos lo que se siente ser ignorado y que pasen a uno cuando queremos que alguien nos escuche. Todos sabemos lo que se siente tener una necesidad y ver que nadie parece interesado en ayudar. Jesús nos enseña que el camino a Dios es ayudar a los demás. El le dice al abogado en la parábola ir y tratar a los demás del mismo modo que el Samaritano trató al hombre herido.
El concepto de La Regla de Oro nos enseña como ayudar a otros y “ponernos en sus zapatos.” Nos fuerza a ver más allá de nosotros mismos y ver que hay otros alrededor de nosotros con quienes tenemos que relacionarnos. Eso es exactamente lo que Jesús hizo cuando ayudó a los pobres, los enfermos, los desamparados, aquellos que eran rechazados por la sociedad. El llama esta gente “benditos” por Dios.
En nuestra sociedad moderna tiende a haber más y más “Yo” centrado, haríamos bien en considerar La Regla de Oro. Estar alerto a los demás alrededor de nosotros y ayudarlos nos enseña mucho de nosotros mismos y del amor de Dios.
El practicar La Regla de Oro también nos ayuda a ver dentro de nosotros. Nos invita a reflexionar en nuestras propias heridas, tanto físicas como espirituales y nuestra necesidad de ser sanados. Jesús, como el Buen Samaritano, nos ayuda a todos nosotros con Su amor sin medida y busca sanarnos de nuestras faltas. No podemos salir y ayudar a otros como Jesús nos pide hacerlo hasta haber primero conocido el amor de Dios nosotros mismos. El evangelio del Buen Samaritano nos invita a meditar en como Dios nos ha tocado en el pasado y también en como necesitamos sentir el toque amoroso de Dios ahora. Si podemos abrirnos a recibir el poder sanador de Dios, entonces somos libres de hacer lo que Jesús nos pide en los evangelios: “Ve y haz lo mismo.”
La Regla de Oro puede servir como un cierto “compás espiritual” señalándonos la dirección de una relación mas cercana a Dios. Al preguntarnos si estamos tratando a otros como queremos ser tratados podemos saber si nuestras acciones se dirigen hacia otros, como Jesús nos manda hacerlo.
