NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD
When I read today’s gospel, one thought that occurred to me is that the story of the loaves and fish can easily be applied to our current economic situation. There are people who presently are experiencing hard times and they may feel very much like being in a desert, similar to the place which Jesus resorted in the gospel of today’s liturgy. The desert was Jesus’ refuge in trying to evade the evil plans of Herod after the latter had taken John the Baptist’s life.
Herod’s aim was to pursue Jesus also because his teachings challenged Herod. Apparently he did not want to put energy into going after Jesus in the desert. Instead, we see the people following Jesus into this desolate place. They so hungered for the Word that came from Jesus’ lips. Jesus had a very calming presence in the lives of people amidst the troubles and anxieties they experienced.
A dilemma presents itself as the crowds are gathered in the desert. It is toward evening and the people are getting hungry. The disciples have only one way of solving the situation—send the people away to the market where they can buy whatever they need. The disciples do not focus on what they have, five loaves and two fish. Rather, the solution was to send the crowd home or to stop in a nearby town on the way.
We soon learn that Jesus has a different twist in handling the situation. He comes at it from the angle of emphasizing what is available and how it can be utilized at the moment. This is a much more positive and creative approach. From Jesus’ perspective, the food on hand was seen as a gift and he sets an example of utilizing its use to everyone’s satisfaction.
In the miracle of loaves and fish which we read about today, Jesus highlights the value of coming together around the table to share a meal and to share life. How often do we find ourselves victims, as it were, of speed and convenience when it comes to the key meal of the day? A “drive up” in the neighborhood might serve as a substitute for the family gathering around the table at home. Have we given thought to the fact that resorting to fast food deprives us of the intimacy of sharing a meal with another person or with the family?
There are always exceptions but we don’t want to lose the precious moments that provide some exchange of how the day was for us as we gather for an evening meal. All kinds of celebrations occur around the table... birthdays and holidays or honoring a person at a banquet for some great accomplishment. This tells us that more than eating occurs when we gather at a table for meals. The love and friendship we have for one another is especially honored and respected on such occasions.
The beginning words of the first reading from Isaiah, “All you who are thirsty, come” also sets the tone for communal sharing around the table. It is not only food that refreshes us but the companionship and goodness of those with whom we choose to share life.
Another aspect of today’s gospel account that strikes me is that it is not only Jesus who shares food with the people gathered but they, in turn, follow his example. One gives to the other, who gives to the next, and so on. It turns out that sharing of food is sharing life with one another. And the human exchange grows and expands. My guess is that Jesus utilized this gathering of many folks as a means of giving an example. With whatever resources we may be blessed, it behooves us to share our goods with others.
After having considered the words of today’s readings, we might look at our own lives and ask ourselves— what might we do that can make meals and gatherings with family and friends more meaningful? Do we take the time to be together a few times a week? If sharing meals and life with one another is of value and importance, what changes may need to be made to allow this to happen on a regular basis?
It is in the breaking of bread at each Eucharist that we hear the words, “Do this in remembrance of me.” I invite you to accept not only Jesus’ challenge to share bread, but to share your very self with others, your family, your neighbors and the faith community of Queen of Angels.

“¿Como Compartimos?” CON DIOS NADA ES IMPOSIBLE:
Cuando leí el Evangelio de hoy, un pensamiento que se me ocurrió es que la historia de las hogazas de pan y el pescado puede fácilmente ser aplicada a nuestra situación económica actual. Hay gente que en este momento esta experimentando tiempos difíciles y pueden sentirse bastante como estar en un desierto, similar al lugar al cual Jesús recurrió en el evangelio de la liturgia de hoy. El desierto era el refugio de Jesús al tratar de evadir los planes diabólicos de Herodes después de que Herodes había tomado la vida de Juan el Bautista.
La tirada de Herodes todavía era también perseguir a Jesús porque sus enseñanzas retaban a Herodes. Aparentemente el no quería poner su energía en perseguir a Jesús en el desierto. En vez de eso, vemos que la gente seguía a Jesús a este lugar desolado. Tanta era su hambre por la Palabra que salía de los labios de Jesús. Jesús tenía una presencia muy pacificadora en las vidas de la gente entre los problemas y ansiedades que ellos experimentaban.
Un dilema se presenta al estar la multitud reunida en el desierto. Esta llegando la tarde y la gente tiene hambre. Los discípulos tienen solamente un modo de solucionar la situación. Enviar a la gente al mercado donde ellos pueden comprar cualquier cosa que necesiten. Los discípulos no se enfocan en lo que ellos tienen, cinco panes y dos pescados. En su lugar, su solución era enviar a la multitud a su casa o a comprar en algún pueblo cercano por el camino.
Pronto aprendemos que Jesús tiene un modo diferente de manejar la situación. El llega desde el ángulo de enfatizar lo que esta disponible y como puede ser utilizado en ese momento. Esto es un modo mucho más positivo y creativo de llegar al problema. Desde la perspectiva de Jesús, la comida a la mano era vista como un regalo y el pone el ejemplo de utilizar eso para la satisfacción de todos.
En el milagro de las hogazas de pan y el pescado del cual hemos leído hoy, Jesús subraya el valor de reunirse alrededor de la mesa para compartir una comida y compartir la vida. ¿Con que frecuencia nos encontramos a nosotros mismos como victimas, por así decirlo, de la rapidez y conveniencia cuando llega la hora de la comida mas importante del día? Pasar manejando por la ventanilla del restaurante local puede servir de substituto de la reunión familiar alrededor de la mesa en el hogar. ¿Hemos pensado un poco en el hecho de que recurriendo a la comida rápida nos priva de la intimidad de compartir una comida con otra persona o con la familia?
Siempre hay excepciones pero no queremos perder esos momentos preciosos para proveer un intercambio de los eventos del día al reunirnos para la cena. Toda clase de celebraciones ocurren alrededor de la mesa... cumpleaños y días festivos o un banquete para celebrar una persona por algún gran logro. Esto nos dice que lo que ocurre cuando nos reunimos a la mesa para alguna comida es mas que solamente consumir alimentos. El amor y la amistad que sentimos unos por otros es especialmente honrado y respetado en esas ocasiones.
Las palabras al principio de la primera lectura de Isaías, “Todos ustedes, los que tienen sed, vengan” también marca el tono para una celebración comunal alrededor de la mesa. No es solamente la comida lo que nos refresca, sino también la compañía y la bondad de aquellos con quienes escogemos compartir la vida.
Otro aspecto del relato del Evangelio de hoy que me llama la atención es que no es solamente Jesús quien comparte la comida con la gente reunida pero ellos, a su vez, siguen su ejemplo. Uno le da al otro, quien le da al que sigue y así por el estilo. Resulta que compartir la comida es compartir la vida unos con otros. Y la relación humana crece y se expande. Me supongo que Jesús utilizaba estas reuniones de mucha gente como un medio de darles el ejemplo. Con cualesquier recursos con que podamos ser bendecidos, nos corresponde a nosotros compartir nuestros bienes con otros.
Después de haber considerado las palabras de las lecturas de hoy podríamos mirar a nuestras propias vidas y preguntarnos – ¿que podríamos hacer que puedan hacer las comidas con familia y amigos mas significativas? ¿Nos tomamos el tiempo para estar juntos varias veces a la semana? ¿Si compartir la vida unos con otros es de valor e importancia, que cambios debemos hacer para permitir que esto suceda regularmente?
Es al partir el pan en cada Eucaristía que escuchamos las palabras, “Hagan esto en conmemoración mía.” Les invito a aceptar no solo el reto de Jesús de compartir el pan, sino también compartir de nosotros mismos con los demás, sus familias, sus vecinos y la comunidad de fe de Reina de los Ángeles.
