NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD
Recently at a family funeral I had the opportunity to visit with some relatives that I had not seen or spoken to for some years. Someone made the comment that, "it's too bad that we only see one another at a funeral." It is certainly true that a funeral is truly an event that brings friends and family together to support one another. It is a time when people share memories and experiences with one another. It is a time that is filled with the whole range of human emotions, such as sadness and melancholy, anger and dismay, as well as hopefulness and peace. The experience of death is one that touches us on the most basic level of our being. When we lose someone who is close to us through death, we come face to face with the reality of our own mortality.
The story of the death of Lazarus is that of any family funeral. Lazarus has died, and his family and friends come together to mourn his loss and support one another in prayer. We can imagine people who have not seen one another for some time coming together to renew relationships and to share stories about Lazarus' life. They send word to Jesus that Lazarus is near death and that he should come to see his friend. Jesus tarries and arrives four days after Lazarus' death. This evokes a variety of emotions in the people. Some are angry because they think that Jesus could have saved Lazarus if he had arrived when he was still alive. However, it was Jesus' intention to wait until Lazarus had died to arrive on the scene and perform this miracle so that those present might see the glory of God revealed and believe in Him.
Jesus challenges Lazarus' sister, Martha, and the others by saying, "I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live." Then Jesus challenges their faith with the question, "Do you believe this?"
Here Jesus asks a seemingly simple question, but one that requires a bit of soul searching in order to answer honestly. Let's imagine Jesus is asking US the question and we must answer. In other words, he is asking us, "Do you believe all those things that you learned in catechism classes, and from your parents and godparents and from homilies in church, etc. about your faith?" "Do you believe in the promise of eternal life?"
As you consider your answer, let's imagine what it must be like INSIDE the tomb, sealed in darkness and silence without air. Then you hear Jesus calling your name from outside and the tomb opens up. The darkness gives way to light streaming in, the silence is broken by the sounds of the world outside, and the stifling lack of air is filled with a cool, refreshing breeze. Jesus calls you out of the tomb into life.
Sometimes our life has elements of the tomb. We experience darkness, loneliness, hopelessness, anger. At times we may not feel that others understand us, or even care how we feel. We may feel taken advantage of or used by others. Or we may even feel abandoned in time of need. But when we feel that life is a weighing us down, we hear Jesus asking us, "Do you believe in the promise of eternal life?"
Just as Jesus said, "Lazarus, come out!" Jesus extends to us the invitation to come out of our darkness into the light of faith. It is no coincidence that the Church gives us this gospel reading just two weeks before Easter, for Easter is the celebration of Jesus' triumph over the grave.
No matter how difficult things get for us in life, we always have the hope that we will have new life with Jesus.

CON DIOS NADA ES IMPOSIBLE
"¿Crees Tú Esto?"
Recientemente, en un sepelio en mi familia, tuve la oportunidad de visitar con unos familiares con los cuales no he comunicado en unos años. Alguien hizo el comentario que, "lástima que sólo nos vemos cuando se muere alguien." Es verdad que un sepelio es un evento que reúne los miembros de una familia para que se apoyen. Es un momento cuando la gente comparte sus memorias y sus experiencias el uno con el otro. Es un momento lleno de todas las emociones humanas, como la tristeza y la melancolía, la ira, hasta la esperanza y la paz. La experiencia de la muerte nos afecta en el nivel más profundo de nuestro ser. Cuando perdemos a un ser querido, nos enfrentamos con la realidad de nuestra propia mortalidad.
La historia de la muerte de Lázaro es la de un sepelio de familia. Lázaro se ha muerto, y su familia y sus amigos se reúnen para apoyarse el uno al otro en la oración. Se puede imaginar los miembros de la familia de Lázaro renovando sus amistades y compartiendo las historias de la vida de Lázaro. Le mandan un mensaje a Jesús que Lázaro está moribundo y que debe venir a ver a su amigo antes de morir. Jesús demora y llega cuatro días después de la muerte de Lázaro. Esto evoca una variedad de emociones entre la gente. Algunos se enojan con Jesús porque piensan que si Jesús hubiera llegado a tiempo hubiera podido salvar a Lázaro. No obstante, fue la intención de Jesús esperar hasta la muerte de Lázaro para mostrar el poder de Dios por este milagro y que se glorificara el nombre de Dios y la gente creyera.
Jesús desafía a Marta, la hermana de Lázaro, y a los demás diciendo, "Yo soy la resurrección y la vida. El que cree en mí, aunque esté muerto, vivirá." Entonces Jesús le presenta con la pregunta, "¿Crees esto?"
Jesús hace una pregunta simple, pero una que necesita un poco de autoestudio para contestar honestamente. Imaginemos que Jesús nos hace la pregunta a NOSOTROS y tenemos que contestar. Mejor dicho nos pregunta, "¿Creen todas esas cosas que aprendieron en sus clases de catecismo, de sus padres y padrinos, en las homilías de la misa, etc. acerca de su fe?" "¿Creen en la promesa de la vida eterna?"
Mientras considera Ud. su respuesta, imaginemos como es ADENTRO de la tumba, sellado en la oscuridad y silencio sin aire. Entonces oye a Jesús llamándole a Ud. desde afuera y la tumba se abre. La oscuridad se llena de luz, el silencio se rompe con los sonidos del mundo afuera, y la tumba sofocada se llena con aire fresco. Jesús le llama a salir de la tumba.
A veces nuestra vida tiene elementos de la tumba. Experimentamos la oscuridad, la soledad, la falta de esperanza, y la ira. A veces nos sentimos como si nadie nos comprende, o que nos toma en cuenta. Nos sentimos manipulados y usados por la gente. Nos sentimos abandonados hasta por Dios. Cuando nos sentimos que la vida nos pesa, oímos a Jesús preguntándonos, "¿Crees en la promesa de la vida eterna?"
Como Jesús le dijo, "Lázaro, sal de ahí," Jesús nos extiende una invitación de salir de la oscuridad y entrar en la luz de la fe. No es una coincidencia que la Iglesia nos da este evangelio dos semanas antes de la Pascua, porque la Pascua es la celebración del triunfo de Jesús sobre la muerte.
No importa que tan difícil las cosas son para nosotros en la vida, siempre tenemos la esperanza de tener nueva vida con Jesús.
