NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD
As we gather at Mass this morning the Church reminds us of God’s precious gift of life. For over thirty years the Church has dedicated the first Sunday of October as Respect Life Sunday. During the month of October the whole Church celebrates the Creator’s greatest gift – Life. Many of us will remember the first week of October of 1979, when the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II visited the United States and came to Chicago. He had only been Pope for less than a year at the time, and the city was alive with the excitement of his visit. We all felt the joy of being in the presence of such a holy and influential person, and felt a sense of unity with other Catholics and indeed, other faith-filled people, Christian and non-Christian alike. The main event of his visit was a beautiful mass that the Holy Father celebrated in Grant Park attended by almost one million people. During his visit to the United States the Holy Father stated:
“Human life is precious because it is the gift of a God whose love is infinite; and when God gives life, it is forever! Nothing surpasses the greatness or dignity of a human person. All human beings ought to value every person for his or her uniqueness as a creature of God, called to be a brother or sister of Christ by reason of the incarnation and the universal redemption. For us, the sacredness of human life is based on these premises. And it is on these same premises that there is based our celebration of life—all human life. This explains our efforts to defend life against every influence or action that threatens or weakens it, as well as endeavors to make every life more human in all its aspects.”
These words of Pope John Paul II call us all to remember that God is the creator of each and every one of us and each human life is valuable and dignified. All of us: men and women; young and elderly; poor or rich; healthy or ill; hale or handicapped; people from different cultures, languages, social levels, and religious background; we are all called to respect the life of each other and encourage each other to use God’s gifts and to be all that we can be, contributing what we can to the good of society.
In the front of the church near the pulpit there will be a candle burning during mass on all the Sundays during the month of October. It is there to remind us that the Eucharist is a celebration of our life in Christ. It is Jesus’ Body and Blood that is the sacrament of our unity, calling us all together from many different walks of life to celebrate one Faith. When we are at mass and see the candle burning, let us pray in defense of God’s precious gift of life. We pray for the unborn; for the sick, infirm and elderly; for the poor; for those who suffer from injustice; for those whose lives are disrupted by war; for those who suffer from hatred and prejudice; for those who are lonely and forgotten and considered useless by society. Let us pray for our elected officials in government, that they may use their offices for the promotion of peace, justice and dignity of life.
In the gospel reading today the apostles ask Jesus to increase their faith. Jesus replies by telling them that they already have faith, but don’t realize it. He reminds them that if they would discover the faith that the Lord has already put in them, they could do great things. Our level of faith is somewhat paradoxical in that we must ask the Lord each day to increase it, but we must also realize that faith is already in us. We can be assured that, if we remain close to the Lord, our faith is strong and our prayer is efficacious. Father Tom Lamping
CON DIOS NADA ES IMPOSIBLE “La Vida – Un Regalo Precioso de Dios” Mientras nos reunimos en la misa la Iglesia nos recuerda del regalo precioso de Dios que es nuestra vida. Por más de treinta años la Iglesia en Estados Unidos ha dedicado el primer domingo del mes de octubre como El Domingo de Respeto a La Vida. Durante el mes de octubre la Iglesia entera celebra el regalo del Creador más precioso – La Vida. Muchos de nosotros recordamos la primera semana de octubre de 1979, cuando el Santo Padre Juan Pablo II visitó Estados Unidos y vino a Chicago. Era el papa por solo un año y la ciudad estaba viva con la energía de su visita. Sentimos la alegría de estar en la presencia de una persona tan santa y influyente. Sentíamos la unidad con otros católicos y otras personas cristianas y de otras religiones. El evento principal de la visita del papa fue una misa celebrada en Grant Park a la cual asistieron más de un millón de personas. Durante su visita a Estados Unidos dijo el Santo Padre:
“¡La vida humana es preciosa porque es un don de Dios cuyo amor es infinito; y cuando Dios da la vida, es para siempre! Nada sobrepasa la grandeza y la dignidad de la persona humana. Todos los seres humanos deben de valorar a cada persona porque es una criatura única de Dios, llamada a ser una hermano o hermana de Cristo por razón de la encarnación y la redención universal. Para nosotros, la santidad de la vida humana se basa estas premisas. Y también por estas mismas premisas que celebramos la vida – Toda La Vida Humana. Esto explica nuestros esfuerzos de defenderla de toda las influencias o acciones que la amenaza o la debilita, tanto como nuestros esfuerzos de hacer cada vida más humana en todos los aspectos.”
Estas palabras del Papa Juan Pablo II nos recuerdan que Dios es el Creador de cada uno de nosotros y que cada vida humana tiene valor y dignidad. Todos de nosotros: hombres y mujeres; jóvenes y ancianos; sanos y enfermos; fuertes o discapacitados; gente de diferentes culturas, lenguas, niveles sociales, y religiones; somos llamados a respetar la vida de cado uno y animarnos el uno al otro para usar los dones de Dios y ser todo lo que podemos ser, contribuyendo lo que podemos al bien de la sociedad.
En frente de la Iglesia por el púlpito habrá un vela encendida durante todas las misas durante el mes de octubre. Está allí para recordarnos que la Eucaristía es una celebración de nuestra vida en Cristo. Es el Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo que es el sacramento de nuestra unidad, llamándonos de todos los rincones del mundo a celebrar una sola Fe. Cuando estamos en misa y vemos la vela encendida, oremos en defensa del regalo de Dios más precioso que es la vida. Oremos por los no nacidos; por los enfermos y los ancianos; por los pobres; por los que sufren la injusticia; por los que sufren en las guerras; por los que sufren el odio y el prejuicio; por los que se sienten solos y olvidados y juzgados sin valor por la sociedad. Oremos por nuestros oficiales elegidos en el gobierno que usen sus posiciones para promover la paz y la justicia y la dignidad de la vida.
En el evangelio de hoy los apóstoles le piden a Jesús que se les aumente la fe. Jesús les responde por decirles que ya tiene fe, pero no se dan cuento de ella. Les recuerda que si descubrirían la fe que el Señor ya les había puesto podrían hacer maravillas. Nuestra fe es complicada. Le pedimos a Dios cada día que se la aumente en nosotros, pero a la vez ya la tenemos. Podemos estar seguros de que, si nos quedamos cerca al Señor, nuestra fe es fuerte y nuestra oración es eficaz.
