NEW YEAR’S EVE WITH RCYA The Ravenswood Young Adult Catholics group will sponsor a New Year’s Eve Party from 7:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. at Daily Bar and Grill, 4560 N. Lincoln. Tickets are $60 if purchased by December 26 ($70 thereafter) and include open bar, appetizer buffet, champagne toast, favors, DJ and dancing. Tickets may be purchased online at www.rcyachicago.org (click on “Events”). Must be 21 to attend. This is the group’s largest fundraiser. Proceeds will be used for scholarships for parish schools and other activities of the group.

CHORISTERS PERFORM AT CATHOLIC CHARITIES ST. NICHOLAS BALL Our Queen of Angels Choristers, under the direction of Kent Jager and Deborah Beien, sang for Cardinal George and 1,100 guests at the Catholic Charities St. Nicholas Ball. The Choristers prepared Christmas Carols and other sacred music. Wearing red and white, they were joined by 60 children who benefit from a Catholic Charities after-school program. These 90 voices united for the caroling portion of the program.

Thanks to the Choristers for their hard work and diligence! You are a fine asset to our parish community and we are proud of the way you represent us away from the parish. Thanks also to the unsung efforts of parents who continue to help keep their children singing.

The Queen of Angels Choristers sing twice each month, on the second and fourth Sundays at the 9:30 a.m. Mass. Join us at 5 p.m. Mass Christmas Eve and see their red and white surprise, or follow the Choristers on the road again for caroling at noon Monday, December 18 at City Hall. Drop by the lobby’s west end at 121 N. LaSalle and share in the excitement!

CHRISTMAS TREE SALES IN FINAL WEEK! The annual Christmas Tree Sale to benefit Queen of Angels continues. A wide selection of trees and wreaths are available at affordable prices. Trees will be sold weekday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. as well as weekends from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., continuing until Saturday, December 16 if trees are still available.

Volunteers are needed to sell trees. Please give several hours of your time to make this sale a success. Call the Parish Center at 773-539-7510 to volunteer for this effort. Thank you for your help and support!

HEIFER INTERNATIONAL SALES RETURN: GIVE THE GIFT OF HOPE The Peace and Justice Committee is again offering charitable holiday gifts from the Heifer organization. Heifer International provides livestock and training so that families can improve nutrition and earn extra income for health care, shelter and education for children. ADVENT VESPERS DECEMBER 17 You are invited to attend the fourth annual presentation of John Rutter’s Dancing Day, presented by the Queen of Angels Women’s Chorus, with harp accompaniment. The candlelight concert and vespers will be presented at 4 p.m. Sunday, December 17 in the church. The event will be a wonderful way to stop, reflect and enjoy the wait for Christmas. A goodwill offering is welcome.

A Promise

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD

Advent is the Christian’s yearly reminder that the heart of our faith is a  promise.  The textual groupings for the next four Sundays resonate both with the yearnings of Hebrew tradition—made alive in the stories of God’s renewing covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob—and the affirmation of the Christian Gospel that the Christ Child is the fulfillment of that often flickering flame.

You won’t find it in any hymnal, but Stephen Sondheim’s song “Something’s Coming” captures this sense of expectancy at the heart of Advent longing:

Could be! Who knows?
There’s something due any day;
I will know right away,
Soon as it shows.
It may come cannonballing down through the sky
Gleam in its eye
Bright as a rose!

During the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem in 587 B.C., Zedekiah, king of Judah, wearied by Jeremiah’s oracles predicting the royal city’s impending collapse, threw the prophet into prison. When Jeremiah’s cousin Hanamel came to visit, God commanded Jeremiah to buy his cousin’s field in accordance with the ancient law of land redemption (Lev. 25:25-28). This seemed foolish to the prophet: What good would a field be once the land was destroyed and the people exiled? Wouldn’t that be like getting a good price on a few square blocks of downtown New Orleans after the levees broke? He put that question to the Lord.

The Lord replied, “Is anything too hard for me?” (Jer. 32:27). Now there’s a ringing watchword for this Advent season.  Yes, God was going to allow the Babylonians to conquer the city because of its idolatry.  But the day would come when the Lord would restore the exiles to the land, transform them into faithful followers, establish a new covenant with them, and restore their prosperity.  The land may be worthless now, but one day its value would be restored.  Jeremiah’s purchase of the field was an acted parable of living hope, a bold sign of foreshadowing an as-yet unseen future.  Jeremiah was incarnating the spirit of Advent’s promise, and the next stanza of Sondheim’s song:

Who knows?
It’s only just out of reach
Down the block, on a beach,
Under a tree.
I got a feeling there’s a miracle due,
Gonna come true,
Coming to me!

From his prison cell Jeremiah proclaimed this hopeful word: God keeps God’s promises.  Though the lineage of David looked as dead as a chopped-down tree, God would cause a twig to sprout from the hewn trunk, an anointed descendant of David, who would restore justice and righteousness to Israel and safety to Jerusalem. What a powerful image of promise!  The twig-sprouting tree trunk would live as a symbol for the yearning of Hebrew prophets and people.  Remember when Isaiah used this same image?

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse: from his roots a Branch will bear fruit... In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his place of rest will be glorious (Is. 11:1, 10).

Kings came and went. None embodied the hope uttered by Jeremiah. But the people of God never gave up on God’s promise.

Could it be? Yes it could. Something’s coming, something good, If I can wait!

Then Jesus came. All the longing of this holy season is wrapped up in those three words: Then... Jesus... came.  Raised in the home of a carpenter, the Virgin Mary’s miracle of grace, the only begotten of the Father, Jesus was born as the full flowering of the righteous Branch sprouting from David’s tree.  He is the fulfillment of God’s promise, the embodiment of our hope, the human face of God.  On our doubting days, at our darkest “bah humbug” moments, we do well to remember the Lord’s question to Jeremiah: “Is anything too hard for me?” Fellow promise seekers, hear the call to Advent expectation:

The air is humming,
And something great is coming!

UNA PROMESA
CON DIOS NADA ES IMPOSIBLE

Adviento es el recordatorio anual Cristiano de que el corazón de nuestra fe es una promesa.  Los grupos de texto para los próximos cuatro domingos resuenan tanto con los deseos vivos de la tradición hebrea – traída a la vida en las historias de Dios renovando el convenio con Abraham, Isaac y Jacob – y la afirmación del Evangelio Cristiano de que el Niño Jesús es el cumplimiento de esa llama, oscilante a veces.

Usted no la encontrará en ningún libro de himnos, pero la canción de Stephen Sondheim “Algo viene” captura este sentido de expectación en el corazón de los deseos vivos de Adviento:

¡Podrá ser! 
¿Quién sabe?
Hay algo que vendrá cualquier día, lo sabré de inmediato
Tan pronto como llegue
Puede venir como bala de cañón bajando del cielo
Con brillo en su ojo
¡Brillante como una rosa!

Durante el sitio de Babilonia a Jerusalén en el año 587 A.C.  Zedekias, rey de Judea, cansado de los oráculos de Jeremías prediciendo la caída inminente de la ciudad real, aventó al profeta en prisión.  Cuando Hanamel, el primo de Jeremías, vino a visitarlo, Dios ordenó a Jeremías comprar el campo de su primo, de acuerdo con la vieja ley de redención (Lev. 25:25-28).  Esto le parecía tonto al profeta: ¿De que podía servir el campo una vez que la tierra fue destruida y la gente exiliada?  ¿No sería eso como obtener un buen precio en algunas manzanas del centro de Nueva Orleáns después de que los diques se rompieron?

El le hizo esa pregunta al Señor.

El Señor le contestó, “¿Hay algo muy difícil para mi?” (Jer. 32:27). Ahora, para esta temporada de Adviento aquí esta su santo y seña.  Si, Dios iba a permitir a los de Babilonia que conquistaran la ciudad a causa de su idolatría.  Pero el día vendrá cuando el Señor devuelva los exiliados a la tierra, los transforme en seguidores fieles, establezca un nuevo convenio con ellos y les devuelva su prosperidad.  La tierra podrá carecer de valor ahora, pero un día su valor será restaurado.  La compra del campo de Jeremías, fue una parábola actuada de esperanza viva, una señal atrevida de presagio en un futuro todavía incierto.  Jeremías estaba encarnando el espíritu de la promesa de Adviento, y la siguiente estrofa de la canción de Sondheim:

¿Quien sabe?
Es solo que esta fuera de alcance
Calle abajo, en una playa.
Bajo un árbol
Presiento que viene un milagro
Se va a hacer realidad
¡Viene a mí!

Desde su celda en prisión, Jeremías proclamaba esta palabra esperanzada: Dios mantiene las promesas de Dios.  Aun cuando el linaje de David se veía tan muerto como un árbol que ha sido cortado, Dios haría crecer una rama del tronco desbastado, un descendiente ungido de David, quien restauraría la justicia y virtud a Israel y la seguridad a Jerusalén.

¡Que imagen tan ponderosa de una promesa!  El tronco de árbol con su rama naciendo viviría como un símbolo del deseo vivo de la gente y los profetas hebreos.  ¿Recuerda cuando Isaías usaba esta misma imagen? “Un retoño saldrá del tronco de Jesse: de sus raíces una rama dará fruto ... En ese día la Raíz de Jesse se levantará como una bandera para las gentes; las naciones vendrán a el y su lugar de descanso será glorioso.” (Isa. 11:1, 10). Reyes vinieron y se fueron.  Ninguno encarnó la esperanza pronunciada por Jeremías.  Pero la gente de

Dios nunca se dio por vencida en la promesa de Dios.

¿Podría ser?  Si podría.  Algo viene, algo bueno, ¡Si puedo esperar! Entonces vino Jesús.  Todo ese deseo inalcanzable de esta temporada santa se envuelve en esas tres palabras: Entonces ... Jesús ... Vino.  Criado en el hogar de un carpintero, el milagro de la gracia de la Virgen Maria, el único nacido del Padre, Jesús nació como el retoño lleno de flores de la Rama virtuosa saliendo del árbol de David.  El es el cumplimiento de la promesa de Dios, la encarnación de nuestra esperanza, la cara humana de Dios.  En nuestros días de duda, en nuestros momentos mas obscuros, hacemos bien en recordar la pregunta de Dios a Jeremías: ¿Hay algo muy difícil para mi?” Compañeros buscadores de promesas, escuchen el llamado a la expectación de Adviento:

El aire esta tarareando
¡Y algo grande esta llegando!

HOLIDAY ARTS AND CRAFT FAIR A SUCCESS Thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers who helped make the Holiday Arts and Craft Fair a great success this year. We appreciate the generous parents who baked treats for the Little Angels Bakery, prepared delicious entrees for the Cozy Café, donated wonderful items to the North Pole and helped make the fair run smoothly by donating their time. Thank you to all who attended and we’ll see you next year!

Heifer International helps the underprivileged to obtain a sustainable source of food and income. Your gift provides training and animals to children and families. This helps them to become self-reliant farmers and to combat hunger. Sales will be held after all weekend Masses on December 9, 10, 17 and 18.  Monetary donations to the Heifer organization also will be accepted and are very appreciated.

HOUSING NEEDED The Dobinsky-Paral Family have been hosting a Fulbright Exchange teacher from Chile this semester. In January, she will be joined by her sister and they are hoping to rent a bedroom or an apartment in the Lincoln Square area from January through June. A WORD ABOUT PARKING... Please be considerate of others when using the parking lot. The person you block may not be attending the same event and will be trapped in the parking lot until you return.  The parking lot is used for a number of events and activities that take place simultaneously at various parish facilities. The lot is there for all to use, but it is necessary to find street parking when the lot’s designated parking spaces are filled.
