The Twelve Days of Christmas

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD
We are all aware that the celebration of the Christmas holidays begins earlier and earlier each year in our consumer oriented society. Christmas is big business! The Christmas trees show up in the stores before Thanksgiving now with an accompanying push to shop. There is non-stop Christmas music on the radio 24/7 beginning on November 1. The Post Office and parcel delivery services go into overtime to deliver the many cards and packages being sent to loved ones and friends. The food stores are filled with special holiday delicacies and restaurants and caterers offer special holiday meals for parties and family gatherings. Then, at the stroke of midnight on Dec. 26, it all seems to end.

While this Christmas frenzy is going on around us, the Church is involved in the counter-cultural activity of attempting to maintain the Advent season of preparation for the celebration of Christ’s birth. The Church uses special Advent symbols to accomplish this; i.e. the Advent wreath; purple vestments and altar cloths; subdued music in the liturgy, including the absence of the Gloria; special readings at Mass which focus on preparing the way for the coming of Jesus. In the Church’s liturgical calendar, the celebration of the birth of Christ really does not begin until December 25 and continues through the celebration of Epiphany (Jan. 6) and the Baptism of our Lord, which marks the end of the Christmas season and our Ordinary Time begins once again. When the Advent season ends and we celebrate the birth of Christ on December 25, the Church uses a whole new set of symbols to emphasize that the time of preparation is over: i.e. the purple gives way to white vestments and altar cloths; the Advent wreath disappears, or, as is the case in our parish, is adorned with flowers and the candles are replaced with Christmas colors; the Gloria returns to the liturgy with great splendor and the music takes on a triumphant tone; the Christmas crib or crèche appears in church and is a focal point of the liturgies.

While the secular world is quickly winding down from its Christmas celebrations, the Church begins to celebrate the Twelve Days of Christmas. This period of the twelve days is often much misunderstood by Catholics, and indeed all Christians, everywhere. Contrary to popular belief, these twelve days are not the days before Christmas, but rather the days between the celebration of Christmas Day and Epiphany.

The origin of these Twelve Days of Christmas is rooted in the difference between the calendars that are used by the Western (Roman) Church and the Eastern (Orthodox) Church. Our Western Church celebrates the birth of Christ on December 25 and the coming of the Three Kings (Epiphany) on January 6. The Eastern Orthodox Church, following a different calendar, celebrates the birth of Christ on January 7 and the coming of the Three Kings (Epiphany) on January 19.

By the 16th century there were many customs that had become associated with the Twelve Days of Christmas. For example: the English celebration of Boxing Day takes place the day after Christmas. On this day the master and the servants change places for a day in accordance with Christ’s command to serve others. The celebration of Twelfth Night (January 5) was a night of feasting, which included the sharing of a king’s cake to commemorate the coming of the Three Kings.

In Hispanic countries January 6 has been the traditional day for gift giving, rather than December 25. The day of Los Reyes Magos (The Three Kings) is a day of gifts and celebrating, including a cake called a rosca, which has a small porcelain figure of the baby Jesus baked into it. The person who finds the figure in his or her piece of cake when it is cut is obliged to host a party on Candlemas Day (February 2).

As we celebrate the Christmas season let us remember the Twelve Days of Christmas and that the mystery of Christmas really lasts throughout the year. May the peace of the newborn Jesus remain in our hearts and unite our families in His love. Here is a special Christmas prayer that you can pray with your families throughout the Christmas season.

Los Doce Días de Navidad
CON DIOS NADA ES IMPOSIBLE

Todos estamos conscientes del hecho de que la celebración de las festividades Navideñas empieza mas temprano cada año en nuestra sociedad orientada al consumismo. ¡La Navidad es un gran negocio! Los árboles de Navidad se muestran en las tiendas antes del día de Acción de Gracias ahora, empujándonos a comprarlos. Hay música Navideña constante en la radio, 24 horas al día, 7 días a la semana empezando el 1o de Noviembre. La Oficina Postal y los servicios de entrega de paquetería ofrecen trabajar tiempo extra para entregar las muchas tarjetas y paquetes enviados a seres queridos y amigos. Los supermercados están llenos de comidas especiales para las festividades y los restaurantes y negocios de banquetes ofrecen comidas festivas para fiestas y reuniones familiares. Entonces, al llegar la medianoche el día 26 de Diciembre, todo parece terminar.

Mientras que esta locura de Navidad se está llevando a cabo a nuestro alrededor, la Iglesia está envuelta en la actividad contra-cultural de tratar de mantener la temporada de Adviento en preparación para la celebración del nacimiento de Jesús. La Iglesia usa símbolos de Adviento especiales para llevar esto a cabo, por ejemplo: la corona de Adviento, vestimentas y adornos para el altar color morado, música tranquila en la liturgia, incluyendo la ausencia del Gloria, lecturas especiales en misa que se enfocan en preparar el camino para la llegada de Jesús. En el calendario litúrgico de la Iglesia, la celebración del nacimiento de Cristo de verdad no empieza hasta Diciembre 25 y continua a través de la celebración de la Epifanía (Enero 6) y el Bautizo de nuestro Señor, el cual marca el final de la temporada de Navidad y el principio del Tiempo Ordinario otra vez. Para el Siglo XVI había muchas costumbres que estaban asociadas con los Doce Días de Navidad. Por ejemplo: La celebración inglesa de “Boxing Day” se lleva a cabo el día después de Navidad. En este día el patrón y los sirvientes cambian lugares por un día, de acuerdo con el mandamiento de Jesús de servir a otros. La celebración de la Doceava Noche (Enero 5) era una noche de fiesta, que incluía compartir el pastel del rey para conmemorar la llegada de los Tres Reyes.

En los países de habla Hispana, el 6 de Enero ha sido el día tradicional para dar regalos, en vez de Diciembre 25. El Día de los Reyes Magos es un día de regalos y celebración, incluyendo un pastel llamado La Rosca, el cual tiene dentro una pequeña figura de porcelana del niño Jesús. La persona que encuentra la figura en su pedazo de pastel cuando éste es cortado, está obligada a ofrecer una fiesta el Día de la Candelaria (Febrero 2).

Al celebrar la temporada Navideña, recordemos los Doce Días de Navidad y que el misterio de Navidad realmente dura todo el año. Que la paz del recién nacido Niño Jesús permanezca en nuestros corazones y una nuestras familias en Su amor. Esta es una oración especial de Navidad que ustedes pueden rezar con sus familias a través de la temporada Navideña.

A Christmas Message from the Pastor

Dear Parishioners,
As we look forward with great expectation and anticipation to Christmas Day, let us rejoice that our newborn Savior Jesus Christ is “God with us.” He lived among us so that we could enter into this most intimate relationship with Him.

Jesus became one with us so that we could become one with Him. As we share during this Advent and Christmas season in our beautiful liturgies, good feelings, delicious meals and kind words to one another let us acknowledge that in everything we say and do that Jesus is our refuge, our shepherd, our love—Emmanuel (God with us).

May our newborn Savior always be that radiant light that gives us hope even in the dark moments of our lives.

2007 MASS BOOK OPEN The Book of Mass Intentions for the calendar year 2007 is now open. To request a special intention for a Mass in English or Spanish, please visit the Parish Center during normal business hours. Intentions will be offered at your chosen weekday, Sunday, Holy Day or holiday Masses throughout the year. Suggested donation is $10 per Mass.

NEW YEAR’S EVE WITH RCYA The Ravenswood Young Adult Catholics group will sponsor a New Year’s Eve Party from 7:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. at Daily Bar and Grill, 4560 N. Lincoln. Tickets are $60 if purchased by December 26 ($70 thereafter) and include open bar, appetizer buffet, champagne toast, favors, DJ and dancing. CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT TEST JANAURY 13 At 8 a.m. Saturday, January 13, Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic high schools will administer the annual placement tests. Elementary school eighth grade students who plan to attend Archdiocesan high schools beginning in Fall 2007 should report to the high school they wish to attend to take the test.

Students must bring two No. 2 pencils and a check or money order for the $25 exam fee made payable to the school.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Every Friday, the Blessed Sacrament is placed out for veneration and prayer from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. To reach the Adoration Chapel, enter the church through the Claremont door, walk up the stairs, turn to your left and then to your left again. Walk down the passage behind the altar and enter the former baptistery, where the Eucharist is exposed for veneration.

Feel free to bring your bible, rosary, books and thoughts. Spend some time with Jesus in the form of the Blessed Sacrament. Visitors are asked to register their attendance in the sign-in book when attending Adoration. The book is located in the chapel. You may sign up for a particular hour of prayer every week. Posadas: La Virtud de Hospitalidad

Cuando estamos esperando un invitado necesitamos hacer preparativos; limpiar, comprar cualquier cosa que sea necesaria.  Muchas veces estas tareas son placenteras porque se hacen en anticipación de la llegada de un ser amado.  La hospitalidad es mucho mas fácil cuando uno sabe cuando llegará el visitante.  Es aun más fácil cuando el visitante es un ser querido.  Y aun así, las visitas inesperadas sacuden nuestras vidas, cambian el ritmo y nos hacen llevar a cabo cosas que no habíamos planeado.  El asunto se complica aun más cuando es un extraño quien toca a nuestra puerta.

Pensándolo bien, los encargados de la celebración de Posadas quienes no quieren abrir la puerta a María y José tienen cierta razón.  ¿Porqué abrir la puerta a perfectos extraños, quienes pudieran ser criminales?

Continuamos teniendo las mismas dudas en nuestras vidas diarias.  ¿Por qué deberíamos ayudar a alguien quien quizás no lo merezca o quien nos ocasiona cierto temor?  Con frecuencia escuchamos de casos de personas que engañan a otros o abusan de la bondad de los demás.  ¿Que podemos hacer?

Dar la bienvenida a los demás no es fácil.  Tememos a lo desconocido y algunas veces los estilos culturales son diferentes de los nuestros.  En el caso de inmigrantes, los grupos pueden ser muy diferentes y algunas veces no comparten el mismo idioma, creando un problema de comunicación.  Los posaderos no son diferentes de nosotros. Pero, cuando pueden reconocer a sus visitantes, ellos abren sus puertas proclamando la gracia y bendición que les traería el recibir a esa familia.

La historia de las Posadas nos dice que con frecuencia, aun si no podemos verlo todo al principio, los visitantes vienen de Dios.  Lo que algunas veces rechazamos instintivamente podría ser una bendición para nosotros.  La celebración de las Posadas nos invita a reconocer a otros como gente enviada por Dios, posiblemente como visitas de Dios a nuestras vidas.

Lo mismo se podría decir acerca de personas recién llegadas a nuestros vecindarios y comunidades. Algunas veces se dice que en algunos lugares diferentes grupos (mexicanos, puertorriqueños, anglos, cubanos, etc.) no pueden lidiar unos con otros.  ¿Y si el contacto con estos grupos proveyera luz y gracia de Dios y nuestras vidas fueran enriquecidas?  Ellos podrían haber sido enviados a nosotros por Dios.

Posadas: The Virtue of Hospitality
NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD
When we wait for a guest we need to make preparations, clean, buy whatever is necessary.  Many times these tasks are pleasant because they are done in anticipation of the arrival of a loved one.  Hospitality is much easier when one knows when the visitor will come.  It is even easier when the visitor is a loved one.  And yet, unexpected visits shake our lives, change the rhythm, and make us do things we had not planned.  The issue is further complicated when it is a stranger who knocks on our door.

Come to think of it, the innkeepers of Posadas celebrations who don’t want to open the door to Mary and Joseph have a point.  Why open the door to perfect strangers who could be criminals?

We continue to have the same questions in our daily lives.  Why should we help someone who perhaps does not deserve it, or who causes us some fear?  We often hear cases of people who deceive others or abuse the goodness of others.  What can we do?

Welcoming others is not easy.  We fear the unknown, and sometimes the cultural styles are different from ours.  In the case of immigrants, the groups could be very different and sometimes not share the same language, creating a problem of communication.  The innkeepers are no different from us.  But, when they are able to recognize the visitors, they open their doors, proclaiming the grace and blessing that receiving such a family would bring them.

The story of Posadas tells us that often, even if we are not able to see it at first, visitors come from God. What we sometimes instinctively reject could be a blessing for us.  The celebration of Posadas invites us to recognize others as people sent by God, possibly as visits of God to our lives.

The same could be said about the newly arrived to our neighborhoods and communities.  Sometimes it is said that in some places different groups (Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Anglos, Cubans, etc.) cannot deal with one another.  What if the contact with these groups provided light and graces from God and our lives were enriched? They could have been sent by God to us.

BRIGHTER THANKSGIVING FOR AREA FAMILIES The St. Vincent DePaul Society sincerely thanks all who donated food, contributed monetarily, gave their time and energy to sort and pack food and then deliver it.  Forty families in the area benefited from this year’s Thanksgiving Food Drive.

FAIR TRADE COFFEE SALE As part of its commitment to affirming the dignity of human labor, Queen of Angels Parish is encouraging the use of fairly traded coffee in parish activities and in the homes of parishioners.  The Queen of Angels Peace and Justice Committee supports this effort by offering a limited amount of fair trade coffee for sale from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, December 23, at the Guild Hall.

Twelve ounce bags of  coffee are $7 each.  We also have a limited supply of Fair Trade hot chocolate—great for the holidays!  Come early and buy while supplies last.  Serve up a  cup of justice when you join in fellowship with others.

MISSION APPEAL THANK YOU Dear Father Kaczorowski,

Today we received a check from the mission office in Chicago —the result of the appeal made at Queen of Angels Parish the weekend of August 6 on behalf of the missionary work of the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus.  We were informed your people generously donated $2,261.00 in that collection. With their sacrifices, your people united themselves with the missionary work of the Church.

The Sisters of the Holy Child accept this donation with grateful hearts, realizing that any donation means a sacrifice on the part of the donor.  The money will go far in our work with the poor.  Let your people know that every penny of that gift goes to the missions!

You and your parishioners will be remembered every time Mass is celebrated at our Dalton Center. NEW YEAR’S EVE WITH RCYA The Ravenswood Young Adult Catholics group will sponsor a New Year’s Eve Party from 7:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. at Daily Bar and Grill, 4560 N. Lincoln. Tickets are $60 if purchased by December 26 ($70 thereafter) and include open bar, appetizer buffet, champagne toast, favors, DJ and dancing.  Tickets may be purchased online at www.rcyachicago.org (click on “Events”).  Must be 21 to attend.  This is the group’s largest fundraiser.  Proceeds will be used for scholarships for parish schools and other activities of the group.

CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT TEST JANAURY 13 At 8 a.m. Saturday, January 13, Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic high schools will administer the annual placement tests. Elementary school eighth grade students who plan to attend Archdiocesan high schools beginning in Fall 2007 should report to the high school they wish to attend to take the test.

Students must bring two No. 2 pencils and a check or money order for the $25 exam fee made payable to the school.

TIME IS RUNNING OUT: PLEASE HONOR YOUR PLEDGE! As the Archdiocesan Annual Catholic Appeal draws to a close for this year, it is essential for all those who made a pledge to make every effort to complete their obligation. If it is at all possible for you to honor your pledge, please do so.  Our goal has been met and, as promised, all additional funds will be rebated to Queen of Angels for use in the parish. We expect higher heating bills this winter season to keep our facilities up and running.

Please prayerfully consider fulfilling your commitment so Queen of Angels will receive these much-needed funds. At this point, more than $6,200 is still outstanding. That money would be used for roof repairs and heating bills. We need your support to keep the mission of Queen of Angels alive and thriving.

NICODEMUS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED When a parishioner dies, the priest leads the wake, or vigil service, and celebrates the Mass of Christian Burial. However, the final Prayers of Commendation at the cemetery are led by a lay person.  Why?  Laity are encouraged to lead their brothers and sisters in prayer. It is a sign that when a parishioner dies, other members in the parish—and not just the priest—pray.  This is a ministry of tenderness to a family in sadness and also one of personal fulfillment.  Can you make time for this effort?  Volunteers are needed, especially those available for Saturday morning funerals.  With fellow parishioners, follow the kindness of Nicodemus who, with Joseph of Arimathea, buried Jesus.  Formation, orientation and manual provided. The Story of St. Nicholas of Myra

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD

In our modern times the celebration of Christmas is a mixture of Christian and secular elements. Growing pressure from secular and non-Christian influences continue to attempt to emphasize Christmas as a holiday devoid of Christ. What would our celebration of Christmas be without Santa Claus? However, the origins of Santa Claus, a non-religious figure, are rooted deeply in the life of an early Christian martyr. The following is an excerpt of an article about St. Nicholas, bishop of Myra, who is the original Santa Claus.

The true story of Santa Claus begins with Nicholas, who was born during the third century in the village of Patara. At the time the area was Greek and is now on the southern coast of Turkey. His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor," Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to the those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships.

Under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who ruthlessly persecuted Christians, Bishop Nicholas suffered for his faith, was exiled and imprisoned. The prisons were so full of bishops, priests, and deacons, there was no room for the real criminals—murderers, thieves and robbers. After his release, Nicholas attended the Council of Nicaea in AD 325. He died December 6, 343 AD in Myra and was buried in his cathedral church, where a unique relic, called manna, formed in his grave. This liquid substance, said to have healing powers, fostered the growth of devotion to Nicholas. The anniversary of his death became a day of celebration, St. Nicholas Day. Through the centuries many stories and legends have been told of St. Nicholas' life and deeds. These accounts help us understand his extraordinary character and why he is so beloved and revered as protector and helper of those in need.

One story tells of a poor man with three daughters. In those days a young woman's father had to offer prospective husbands something of value—a dowry. The larger the dowry, the better the chance that a young woman would find a good husband. Without a dowry, a woman was unlikely to marry. This poor man's daughters, without dowries, were therefore destined to be sold into slavery. Mysteriously, on three different occasions, a bag of gold appeared in their home—providing the needed dowries. The bags of gold, tossed through an open window, are said to have landed in stockings or shoes left before the fire to dry. This led to the custom of children hanging stockings or putting out shoes, eagerly awaiting gifts from Saint Nicholas. Sometimes the story is told with gold balls instead of bags of gold. That is why three gold balls, sometimes represented as oranges, are one of the symbols for St. Nicholas. And so St. Nicholas is a gift-giver.

One of the oldest stories showing St. Nicholas as a protector of children takes place long after his death. The townspeople of Myra were celebrating the good saint on the eve of his feast day when a band of Arab pirates from Crete came into the district. They stole treasures from the Church of Saint Nicholas to take away as booty. As they were leaving town, they snatched a young boy, Basilios, to make into a slave. The emir, or ruler, selected Basilios to be his personal cupbearer, as not knowing the language, Basilios would not understand what the king said to those around him. So, for the next year Basilios waited on the king, bringing his wine in a beautiful golden cup. For Basilios' parents, devastated at the loss of their only child, the year passed slowly, filled with grief. As the next St. Nicholas' feast day approached, Basilios' mother would not join in the festivity, as it was now a day of tragedy. However, she was persuaded to have a simple observance at home—with quiet prayers for Basilios' safekeeping. Meanwhile, as Basilios was fulfilling his tasks serving the emir, he was suddenly whisked up and away. St. Nicholas appeared to the terrified boy, blessed him, and set him down at his home back in Myra. Imagine the joy and wonderment when Basilios amazingly appeared before his parents, still holding the king's golden cup. This is the first story told of St. Nicholas protecting children—which became his primary role in the West. Nicholas' tomb in Myra became a popular place of pilgrimage. Because of the many wars and attacks in the region, some

Christians were concerned that access to the tomb might become difficult. For both the religious and commercial advantages of a major pilgrimage site, the Italian cities of Venice and Bari vied to get the relics of St. Nicholas. In the spring of 1087, sailors from Bari succeeded in spiriting away the bones, bringing them to Bari, a seaport on the southeast coast of Italy. An impressive church was built over St. Nicholas' crypt and many faithful journeyed to honor the saint who had rescued children, prisoners, sailors, famine victims, and many others through his compassion, generosity, and the countless miracles attributed to his intercession. The Nicholas shrine in Bari was one of medieval Europe's great pilgrimage centers and Nicholas became known as the "Saint in Bari." To this day pilgrims and tourists visit Bari's great Basilica di San Nicola.

Through the centuries St. Nicholas has continued to be venerated by Catholics and Orthodox and honored by Protestants.

By his example of generosity to those in need, especially children, St. Nicholas continues to be a model for the compassionate life. Widely celebrated in Europe, St. Nicholas' feast day, December 6, kept alive the stories of his goodness and generosity. In Germany and Poland, boys dressed as bishops begged alms for the poor—and sometimes for themselves! In the Netherlands and Belgium, St. Nicholas arrived on a steamship from Spain to ride a white horse on his gift-giving rounds. December 6 is still the main day for gift giving and merrymaking in much of Europe. For example, in the Netherlands St. Nicholas Day is celebrated with the sharing of candies (thrown in the door), chocolate initial letters, small gifts, and riddles. Dutch children leave carrots and hay in their shoes for the horse, hoping St. Nicholas will exchange them for small gifts. Simple gift-giving in early Advent helps preserve a Christmas Day focus on the Christ Child.

Más y más hay presión de la sociedad a enfatizar la Navidad como una fiesta seglar sin Cristo. ¿Qué sería nuestra celebración de Navidad sin Santa Claus? Lo siguiente es una parte de un artículo sobre la vida de San Nicolás, obispo de Myra, quien es el Santa Claus original.

A través de los siglos se han contado muchas historias y leyendas de la vida de San Nicolás. Estas historias nos ayudan a entender el carácter extraordinario de este santo y porque él es tan querido y respetado como el protector de los necesitados.

Una historia habla de un pobre que tenía tres hijas. En esos tiempos el padre de una mujer joven tenía que ofrecerle a su novio algo de valor – una dote. La más grande la dote, mejor la posibilidad de encontrar un buen esposo para sus hijas. Sin una dote fue improbable que una mujer se casara. Estos hijas del hombre pobre, sin dotes, fueron destinadas a vivir una vida de servidumbre sin casarse. Misteriosamente, en tres diferentes ocasiones, una bolsa de oro apareció en su casa proviendo las dotes necesarias. Se dice que las bolas de oro, tirades por una ventana, cayeron en unos calcetines o unos zapatos dejados cerca del fuego para secar. Esto dio principio a la costumbre de colgar sus calcetines o dejar sus zapatos para recibir regalos de San Nicolás. Y por eso uno de los símbolos de San Nicolás es tres bolas color de oro, a veces representadas con naranjas. Por eso San Nicolás era uno que daba regalos.

Una de las historias más antiguas de San Nicolás como un protector de niños toma lugar muchos años después de su muerte. La gente de Myra estaban celebrando el santo del Santo cuando una banda de piratas árabes de Grecia llegaron en su distrito. Robaron unos tesoros de la Iglesia de San Nicolás. Al dejar el pueblo, raptaron a un muchacho llamado, Basilios, para hacerlo esclavo. Su jefe escogió a Basilios como su sirviente. Por un año Basilios servía al rey árabe, pero no entendía lo que el rey decía porque Basilios no entendía la lengua árabe. Los padres de Basilios sufrían mucho por la falta de su hijo, y cuando llegó el próximo Día de San Nicolás su madre no asistía a las festividades. En vez de festejar ella tenía oraciones por Basilios en su casa. Mientras Basilios cumplía sus quehaceres del rey, de repente fue llevada al aire y se le apareció San Nicolás. El santo lo bendijo y los regresó a sus casa en Myra. Imagínense la alegría cuando Basilios apareció ante sus papas con la copa del rey todavía en su mano. Esta es la primera historia que habla de San Nicolás como un protector de niños.

A través de los siglos San Nicolás se ha venerado por los Católicos y los Ortodoxos, y honrado por Protestantes. Por su ejemplo de generosidad a los con necesidad, especialmente a los niños, San Nicolás continua ser una figura de compasión.

El Día de San Nicolás, 6 de diciembre, se celebra por todo Europa. En Alemania y Polonia, muchachos se visten de obispos y piden limosna por los pobres – ¡y a veces por ellos mismos! En Holanda y en Bélgica, San Nicolás llega en un barco de España y monta un caballo blanco para entregar sus regalos. El 6 de diciembre todavía es el día cuando se dan regalos en Europa. Por ejemplo, en Holanda el Día de San Nicolás se celebra por compartir dulces (tirados por la puerta), chocolate, regalitos y juegos. Los niños holandeses dejan zanahorias y pasto en sus zapatos para el caballo, esperando que San Nicolás los cambiarán pos regalos. Dando regalos en el principio de Adviento (Dic. 6) preserva el Día de Navidad como un día para enfocarnos en el Niño Jesús.
