FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK: STATE OF THE PARISH
It is hard to believe I have been at Queen of Angels for more than seven months. I am grateful for being assigned as pastor to this parish. As a priest it is my calling to serve God’s people in this parish family where our common Catholic beliefs are shared. Together we can grow in Christ’s love so that God’s reign continues to flourish in this parish community and neighborhood.
While making the transition from the Vicar for Priests Office, I’m becoming more acquainted with Queen of Angels, its past and present. The stewardship you, as parishioners, exercise in this parish is to be commended. Since October, office manager Marilyn Woodruff and business manager Ed Forester have retired. Lifelong parishioners have filled their positions. Rachel Hohner joined the staff as office manager, and Pat Krier has become volunteer part-time business manager. We are grateful for the skills and talents they bring to the management of this parish.
Overall, the parish is in good shape. Our Parish Mission during Lent prepared us for the spiritual rebirth of Easter through prayer, thoughtful discussion, penance and fellowship with one another. Young people were well-prepared by teachers and parish catechists for the gifts of Confirmation, First Reconciliation and First Communion received in recent months. Though we ultimately share in one Eucharist, I have come to know the different character of each of our Sunday and weekday Masses. I have seen a cooperative spirit at work in the many fundraising efforts coordinated by parish and school organizations. Our parishioners support the dignity of human life through outreach to the poor, to the hungry, to immigrants, to the disabled and to the unborn.
One of the key components in making a parish run efficiently are effective advisory bodies: the Parish Pastoral Council, the Finance Council, School Board and Parish Staff. I’ve met with the leadership of these groups and am grateful for their dedication to Queen of Angels and their wise counsel. With the work that lies ahead, I look forward to their input and guidance. There are some building repairs that need to be addressed, including the continuing leak in the upper church near the first station of the cross. The Parish Center also has a leak in the roof. We’ve started on the final project for Sharing Christ’s Gifts, the chapel in the lower church.
We still struggle financially, but if we work together as a community and trust in God’s help we will succeed. In January, an archdiocesan audit was conducted at the parish. No significant findings were discovered. Compliance with Best Practices will continue. The audit provides a great springboard for Parish Staff and Finance Council to maintain their focus on parish needs.
Looking ahead, we will mark our Parish Centennial in 2009. We need to be ready to start our second century as a parish community. The fulfillment of the last major restoration project of our parish facilities, the gym, will bring to completion the goals of bringing parish buildings up to par.
The “State of Queen of Angels” is more than its physical and financial condition. Our main thrust is to ensure a truly Catholic, faith-based community at Queen of Angels. Let us together exercise a stewardship of parish resources that employs our time, talent, and treasure in living the Gospel fully.

DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR: ESTADO DE LA PARROQUIA
Es difícil creer que he estado en Queen of Angels por mas de siete meses. Estoy agradecido de haber sido asignado como pastor de esta parroquia. Como sacerdote es mi llamado servir a la gente de Dios en esta familia parroquial donde nuestras creencias católicas comunes son compartidas. Juntos podemos crecer en el amor de Cristo para que el reino de Dios continúe floreciendo en esta comunidad y vecindario parroquial.
Al ir haciendo la transición de la oficina del Vicario para Sacerdotes, me estoy familiarizando mas con Queen of Angels, su pasado y su presente. La administración que ustedes ejercitan, como miembros de esta parroquia, debe ser aplaudida. Desde Octubre a la fecha, la gerente de la oficina, Marilyn Woodruff y el gerente de negocios, Ed Forester se retiraron. Miembros de la parroquia de toda la vida han ocupado sus posiciones. Rachel Hohner se unió al personal de la oficina como gerente de oficina y Pat Krier se volvió gerente de negocios voluntario de medio tiempo. Estamos agradecidos por las habilidades y talentos que ellos han venido a traer a la administración de la parroquia.
En general, la parroquia esta en buena forma. Nuestra misión parroquial durante la Cuaresma nos preparó para el renacimiento espiritual de Pascua a través de la oración, discusión considerada, penitencia y camaradería de unos con otros. Los jóvenes fueron bien preparados por maestros y catequistas de la parroquia para los regalos de Confirmación, Primera Reconciliación y Primera Comunión que fueron recibidos en meses recientes. Aun cuando ultimadamente compartimos una Eucaristía, he llegado a conocer el diferente carácter de cada una de nuestras misas de Domingo y de entre semana. He llegado a ver un espíritu cooperativo trabajando en los muchos esfuerzos para recabar fondos coordinados por organizaciones de la parroquia y la escuela. Los miembros de nuestra parroquia apoyan la dignidad de la vida humana a través de sus esfuerzos por ayudar a los pobres, los que tienen hambre, los inmigrantes, los discapacitados y los que están por nacer.
Uno de los componentes clave en hacer que una parroquia funcione eficientemente son los cuerpos de consejo efectivos: El Consejo Pastoral de la Parroquia, el Consejo Financiero, el Consejo Administrativo de la Escuela y el Personal de la Parroquia. Me he reunido con los líderes de estos grupos y estoy agradecido por su dedicación a Queen of Angels y sus consejos sabios. Con el trabajo que tenemos adelante, espero recibir su aportación y guía.
Hay algunas reparaciones al edificio que tienen que ser discutidas, incluyendo la gotera que aun continua en la iglesia, cerca de la primera estación de la cruz. El Centro Parroquial también tiene una gotera en el techo. Hemos empezado el proyecto final de Compartiendo los Regalos de Cristo, la capilla en la parte de debajo de la iglesia. Todavía luchamos económicamente, pero si trabajamos juntos como una comunidad y confiamos en la ayuda de Dios, tendremos éxito. En Enero se hizo una auditoría arquidiocesana en la parroquia. No se encontró nada significativo. Continuaremos cumpliendo con las Buenas Prácticas. La auditoría provee un gran punto de impulso para que el Personal de la Parroquia y el Consejo Financiero mantengan su enfoque en las necesidades de la parroquia.
Viendo hacia delante, marcaremos el Centenario Parroquial en el 2009. Necesitamos estar listos para empezar nuestro segundo siglo como una comunidad parroquial. El cumplimiento del último proyecto de restauración mayor de las instalaciones parroquiales, el gimnasio, vendrá a completar las metas de tener todos los edificios de la parroquia igualmente funcionales.
El “Estado de Queen of Angels” es mas que su condición física y financiera. Nuestro mayor empuje es asegurar una verdadera comunidad Católica basada en la fe en Queen of Angels. Ejerzamos juntos una administración de los recursos de la parroquia que emplea nuestro tiempo, talento y tesoro al vivir el Evangelio.
