FAIR TRADE GOURMET COFFEE SALE
9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, September 24 at the Guild Hall
As part of its commitment to affirming the dignity of human labor, Queen of Angels Parish is encouraging the use of fairly traded coffee in parish activities and in the homes of parishioners. The Queen of Angels Peace and Justice Committee will support this effort by offering fairly trade coffee for sale from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, September 24, at the Guild Hall.
Fair Trade & The Option for the Poor. Our faith calls us to demonstrate a special concern for the most vulnerable members of the human family through action on behalf of the poor. Many of us make an “option for the poor” through occasional acts of generosity, such as donations to the church or other organizations working to alleviate poverty and promote economic justice. These acts are noble, but isolated. Fair Trade provides us with the opportunity to integrate our principles with our purchasing patterns—the opportunity to exercise an option for the poor every day through the choices we make about what to eat, drink and buy. By purchasing fairly traded items, we make a conscious choice to buy from poor people in a way that promises to help lift them out of poverty.
During Market Day pick-up on Saturday, September 24, twelve-ounce bags of fair trade coffee will be available for purchase for $6.50 each. Choose from several different varieties, including whole bean, ground, flavored and decaffeinated coffees. Your purchase helps support Catholic Relief Services and its aid projects with small farmers. Come early and buy while supplies last! Serve up a cup of justice when you join in fellowship with others.
Visit Catholic Relief Services’ fair trade website at www.crsfairtrade.org or the parish peace & justice website at www.peaceandjusticechicago.com. “As followers of Christ, we are challenged to make a fundamental ‘option for the poor’—to speak for the voiceless, to defend the defenseless, to assess life styles, policies, and social institutions in terms of their impact on the poor...As Christians, we are called to respond to the needs of all our brothers and sisters, but those with the greatest needs require the greatest response.” —U.S. Catholic Bishops in Economic Justice for All

Quality vs Quantity: Life & Death, a Catholic Perspective will be the subject of the next Life Logic meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 28 in the Lower Voss Center. The evening will feature Family Practitioner Dr. George Dietz, Catholic ethicist Monsignor Robert Dempsy and Mr. Tom Brejcha of the Thomas More Society, a panel of experts in the area of medical, spiritual and legal life decision-making. They will hold an in depth round table discussion on such topics as tube feeding, disability, living wills, DNR and the “vegetative state.”
We are also excited to announce that this evening’s program will be moderated by Mr. John Morales of Relevant Radio. The Queen of Angels Respect Life Committee is pleased about this opportunity to offer a deeper look at the life and death decisions we all need to face, how to prepare to meet them and the point at which logic and faith converge. SPRED WELCOMES NEW VOLUNTEERS
It is that wonderful time of year when Spred communities throughout the archdiocese are offering an opportunity to all parishioners to become a member of a small community of faith welcoming people with special needs. Spred is an archdiocesan program based in many parishes embracing a unique mission: to provide appropriate and meaningful experiences of faith formation, sacramental preparation and worship for children and adults with developmental disabilities (including, but not exclusive of cerebral palsy, autism, seizure disorders, learning disabilities or attention deficit disorder, behavior or emotional challenges, Down syndrome or other genetic disorders).
There are 126 Spred communities located in various parishes. Some host children, 6-10; some host teens, 11-16; others host young adults, 17-21; while some groups welcome adults, 22 and older. You can choose the age group that you would like to participate in. All groups will welcome you warmly.
Spred is not a teaching method – we are not looking for special degrees or qualifications. We invite ordinary people who enjoy friendship and laughter; who are open to meaningful relationships; who value the dignity of all people; who appreciate sacred and prayerful experiences; who are looking for a place of peace, security and love. Spred offers all of this and more to both the volunteer and the special friend.
If you are just a little bit curious … please call the Spred office at Queen of Angels parish to make an appointment to learn more. We will schedule a meeting at your convenience. Taking a look does not commit you to the program, it simply affords you the opportunity to learn a little about this beautiful ministry and tour a Spred meeting room. If it is not for you … that is fine. If it is for you … you will know, and we will find the best fit for you. Please take this invitation seriously. Spred is a very special gift just waiting to be shared with more people.
