NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE
About five years ago Carol Tipre, one of the past presidents of the
Queen of Angels Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, asked
me if I would consider becoming the spiritual advisor for the group. I
must confess that I really didn’t know much about this old and
prestigious Catholic group other than the fact that their ministry was
directed to helping the poor and needy.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul was founded in 1833 by a young Frenchman named Frederic Ozanam, who was studying law at the Sorbonne in Paris at the time. Frederic, a faithful Catholic, belonged to a discussion group made up of fellow students that would meet on Saturdays to share ideas on many topics. At one particular meeting one of group challenged Frederic and other Catholic members of the group by saying, “I admit that the Catholic Church has done good work in the past, but what do you do now?”
Frederic must have thought that it was a good question because he called a meeting of five Catholic friends at the office of Mr. Emmanuel Bailey, editor of the “Tribune Catholique”, a Catholic newspaper to further discuss the question posed by their non-Catholic friend. At that meeting, Frederic and his friends, along with Mr. Bailey, founded a group dedicated to reaching out to the poor. The date was April 23, 1833, Frederic’s 20th birthday. The original name of the group was the Conference of Charity, which was soon changed to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, after the saint they chose as their patron.
The Society began to spread and similar groups (called conferences) were formed in other countries. Twelve years after its founding, the Society came to the United States. The first conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was founded in 1845 in St. Louis, Missouri at the Basilica of St. Louis, King of France. For those familiar with St. Louis, this is the small church which stands near the south end of the famous Arch. It is popularly known as the “Old Cathedral”.
From these humble beginnings the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has spread throughout the world. Today this includes 875,000 members in 47,000 Conferences (teams) in 131 countries on five continents. in the United States the Society has about 70,000 that helped over 14,000,000 people in 2004. In the United States there are over 70,000 members, who helped almost 14,000,000 people in 2003, mostly through direct, personal encounters of members with those in need.
Our Queen of Angels Conference of the Society is presently active in many ways in our neighborhood. When someone calls our St. Vincent de Paul members to seek some sort of physical or monetary help the caller is initially visited by two or our members. This provides a personal touch, which Frederic Ozanam insisted upon. The visit allows the members of the Society to meet the person and/or family and to assess the needs of the family. It also helps them bring a spiritual element through prayer with the family and also to acquaint them with Queen of Angels parish if they are Catholic. (The Society does not limit its ministry to only Catholics.) The visitors then decide upon what type of help the Society can give the caller. Some examples of types of help that the Queen of Angels conference has given in recent years is help with utility bills, medicine, food, clothing and referrals to other social agencies. In addition to the actual active members of the Society, Queen of Angels Society of St. Vincent de Paul has a host of people who help us with their prayers and financial support.
My Brother’s Kitchen
One ministry that has started in the last year, and sponsored by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, is “My Brother’s Kitchen.” This is a soup kitchen that serves a hot meal to anyone who comes in off the street on any Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The soup kitchen is located at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, at Kedzie and Montrose. Whenever there is a fifth Saturday of the month, our Queen of Angels team shops for the food and prepares the meal, which is served to 70-100 people. St. Vincent de Paul provides the funds to purchase the food for this ministry. This has been a very popular ministry in the last year and has had many volunteers to help feed the hungry. Many of the people that are served are not only off the streets, but families with children who are facing difficult economic times.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is truly an integral part of the whole parish ministry of Queen of Angels parish. It helps us carry out Jesus’ command to reach out to the poor and needy. There are several ways in which you can be part of this ministry:
Become an active member. Meetings are held once a month on the second Thursday. All are welcome to attend a meeting and see what the Society is all about.
Be a prayer supporter. If you can’t get out of the house, this can be done from the comfort of your own home. Prayer for our ministry and for those whom we help.
Offer financial support. The collections at several special masses throughout the year are given to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to enable them to carry out this much-needed ministry. These collections are: Holy Thursday, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Thanksgiving. There are also offering boxes at the top of the stairs on either side when you come into church. You can also place any donations to St. Vincent de Paul in an envelope and place it in the regular Sunday collection at any mass.
Pope John Paul II expressed his love for the special ministry of The Society of St. Vincent de Paul by beatifying Frederic Ozanam in 1997. Beatification is one of the steps toward sainthood. He is now known as Blessed Frederic Ozanam and perhaps he will soon be St. Frederic Ozanam.
Let’s remember these words of Blessed Frederic as we strive to do Jesus’ work in our parish life at Queen of Angels.
What we do for the poor is not something we do for God, our work is what we allow God to do through us.

“La Sociedad de San Viente de Paul”

(Una parte del ministerio a los necesitados de Reina de los Angeles
Hace cinco años que Carol Tipre, una ex-presidente de La Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul de Reina de los Angeles, me preguntó si consideraría ser el director espiritual del grupo. Tengo que admitir que no sabía mucho sobre este antiguo y prestigioso grupo católico más que su ministerio era para ayudar a los pobres.
La Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul fue fundado en 1833 por un francé jóven que se llamabe Frederic Ozanam, que estudiaba la ley en la Universidad del Sorbonne en París. Frederic, un Católico fiel, pertenecía a un grupo de amigos que se reunía los sábados para converar sobre varios temas. En un cierto Sábado un amigo, que no era católico, les dio un desafío a Frederic y otros miembros católicos del grupo. Dijo, “Admito que la Iglesia Católica ha hecho mucho bien en el pasado, pero, ¿Qué hace ahora?”
Frederic pensaba que esto era una buena pregunta porque llamó una reunion de cinco amigos católicos en la oficina del Señor Emanuel Bailey, redactor del “Tribune Catolique”, un periódico católico para hablar más de la pregunta que les hizo su amigo. En esa reunion, Frederic y sus amigos, juntos con el Señor Bailey, fundaron un grupo dedicado a la ayuda de los pobres. La fecha era 23 de abril, 1833, el duodecimo cumpleaño de Frederic. El nombre original del grupo era “Conferencia de la Caridad”, que luego cambiaron a La Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul, nombrado por el santo quien escogieron como su patron.
La Sociedad empezó a extenderse a otros paises. Doce años después de empezar, la Sociedad vino a los Estados Unidos, empezando en St. Louis, MO, en la basilica de San Luis, Rey de Francia. Para los que conocen St. Louis, esta es la iglesia pequeña que se encuentra junto al famoso “Arco”. También se conoce por la “Antigua Catedral”.
De este principio humilde la Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul se ha extendido por todo el mundo. Hoy incluye 875.000 miembros en 47.000 Conferencia (grupos locales) en 131 paises. En los Estados Unidos la Sociedad tiene 70,000 miembros que han ayudado a más de 14.000.000 personas en 2003, por encuentros directos y personales con los necestados que buscaban ayuda.
Nuestra conferencia de Reina de los Angeles es activa en muchas maneras en nuestro barrio. Cuando alguien llama para pedir ayuda La Sociedad manda dos de sus miembros a visitar a la persona y/o familia. Esto provee el toque personal en el cual Frederic Ozanam insistía. La visita les da a los visitants la oportunidad de averiguar las necesidades de la familia y ofrecer apoyo espiritual. Si persona o familia es católica (San Vicente de Paul sirve a todo el mundo, no solo Católicos) los visitantes pueden ofrecer información acerca de la parroquia de Reina de los Angeles. Luego los visitantes deciden que clase de ayuda la Socidad puede ofrecer. Algunos ejemplos de la ayuda que La Sociedad ha dado en recientes años son: cuentas de luz y gas, medicina, comida, ropa. También ayudan a buscar otras agencias sociales que pueden ayudar. Además que los miembros activos de La Sociedad, el grupo tiene muchas personas que ayudan con sus oraciones y su ayuda financiers.
La Cocina de Mi Hermano
Un ministerio que empezó el año pasado, y patrocinado por la Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul, is “La Cocina de Mi Hermano.” Esto es un
comedor público que sirve una comida caliente a quien venga en cualquier Sábado de 11:30 a.m. a 1:00 p.m. El comedor está en la parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced, en la Kedzie y Montrose. Cuando hay un quinto Sábado en un mes, el grupo de San Vicente de Paul de Reina de los Angeles hace las compras y prepara la comida para 70-100 personas. San Vicente de Paul provee los fondos para compara la comida para este ministerio. Esto ha sido un ministerio muy popular durante este ultimo año y ha alimentado a mucha gente. Los que llegan no son
solamente personas que viven en la calle, sino son familias con niños que se encuentran en momentos dificiles.
La Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul is verdaderamente una parte integral de nuestra parroquia de Reina de Los Angeles. Nos ayuda a llevar a cabo el mandato de Jesus de alimentar y ayudar a los pobres. Hay varias maneras en que Ud. puede ser parte de este ministerio:
Ser un miembro activo. Las reuniones del grupo son cada segundo Jueves del mes. Todos están bienvenidos para ver lo que hace la Sociedad.
Ser un “Apoyador en Oración”. Si no puede salir de la casa puede ayudar por orar por los miembros de la Sociedad y por los que ayudan.
Ofrecer apoyo financiero. Las colectas de varias celebraciones del año son para la
Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul para ayudar en su ministerio. Estas colectas son: Jueves Santo, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day y Thanksgiving. Hay también cajas de coleción en la escalera al entrar en la Iglesia. También Ud. puede poner cualquier donación para la Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul en un sobre y dejarlo en la colecta dominical en cualquier misa.
El Papa Juan Pablo II expresó su amor por el ministerio de La Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul cuando beatificó a Frederic Ozanam en 1997. Beatificar a una persona es un paso hacia ser Santo. Ahora se conoce por Beato Frederic Ozanam y tal vez pronto sea San Frederic Ozanam.
Recordemos estas palabras del Beato Frederic mientras tratemos de hacer el trabajo de Jesús en Reina de los Angeles.
Lo que hacemos por los pobres no es algo que hacemos por Dios, sino nuestro trabajo es lo que dejamos que Dios haga por nosotros.
