Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:
One of the last gifts left to the Church by the late Pope John Paul II was his proclamation of the present Year of the Eucharist. As we all accompanied the Holy Father through the final months of his earthly life, he invited us over and over again to join him in reflecting on the theme of the year. By doing so, he called us all to focus on what is truly the center of our lives — the Body and Blood of Christ — the sacrament which fuels our hope that our intimacy with Christ in the Blessed Sacrament now will come to fulfillment in the life to come.
With this in mind, I invite you to join me and Catholics from across the Archdiocese of Chicago in a major public celebration to honor the Most Blessed Sacrament during the Year of the Eucharist on the afternoon of August 5.
The Knights of Columbus are hosting a national Eucharistic Congress in downtown Chicago on August 4 and 5. At its conclusion, at approximately 1 p.m. on Friday, August 5, the auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Chicago and I will join representatives of the Knights to carry the Blessed Sacrament in procession from the Chicago Hilton Hotel to Chicago’s Petrillo Music Shell (located in Grant Park at the intersection of Columbus Drive and Jackson Boulevard), where a service of adoration and Benediction will be celebrated.
Won’t you consider joining us at 1 p.m. at Buckingham Fountain for the Procession or at the Petrillo Music Shell for adoration and Benediction as a beautiful public testatment of devotion to Our Lord?
Your parish bulletin will soon carry more information about the August 5 Eucharistic Procession and about the Eucharistic Congress, and I urge you to continue to visit the archdiocesan website at www.archchicago.org for more details. This event will have its full spiritual impact if you or a member of your family are able to join us for it.
I know many of you remember fondly the Eucharistic celebration at Soldier Field during the Year 2000 Jubilee. That day, I remember saying something that I know is as true now as it was then:
“In this sacrament [of the Eucharist], we who celebrate and receive also are changed and truly become Christ’s holy people. And in this sacrament, the also is changed. In the course of our history, the Church has grown aware of the fact that celebration of this divine mystery cannot be reduced to an event within the walls of a church, and so we process into the streets of the world. We go forward with hymns and prayers, bearing the sacrament of the Body and Blood of the Lord. We go where the life of the human family is bubbling, where its passions are boiling, where its conflicts explode, where its sufferings are consumed and its hopes flower. We go to give testimony with humble joy that this Eucharistic host is the answer to the most pressing questions, comfort for every pain and sorrow, and a pledge of satisfaction for that burning thirst for happiness and love which lies in the secret of our hearts.”
We are one and free in Christ. Let us go forward to proclaim that unity and that freedom during the Year of the Eucharist by joining together on August 5 in Grant Park to praise Him through a beautiful and prayerful Eucharistic Procession and Benediction.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:
Uno de los últimos regalos a la Iglesia que nuestro finado papa, Juan Pablo II nos dejó, fue la proclamación del presente año como el Año de la Eucaristía. A medida que acompañábamos a nuestro querido Santo Padre en los últimos momentos de su vida, él nos invitaba una y otra vez a
unirnos a él para reflexionar sobre este tema. A la vez, él nos invitaba a concentrarnos en lo que realmente es el centro de nuestras vidas –el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo - el sacramento que nos llena de esperanza para acercarnos más a Cristo en el Sagrado Sacramento que nos prepara para la vida eterna.
Con esto en mente, yo les invito a que se unan a mí y a todos los Católicos de la Arquidiócesis de Chicago en una gran celebración en honor del Más Sagrado Sacramento durante este Año de la Eucaristía en la tarde del 5 de agosto.
Los Caballeros de Colón están auspiciando un Congreso Eucarístico los días 4 y 5 de agosto, en el centro de Chicago. Al final de la actividad, alrededor de la 1:00 de la tarde del viernes 5 de agosto, los obispos auxiliares de la Arquidiócesis de Chicago y yo nos uniremos a los representantes de los Caballeros de Colón para cargar los Sagrados Sacramentos en la procesión desde el Hotel Chicago Hilton hasta la Concha Acústica Petrillo (localizada en Grant Park en la intersección del Columbus Drive y Jackson Blvd), donde celebraremos un servicio de adoración y bendiciones.
¿Considerarías unirte a nosotros ese día a la 1:00 P.M. al frente de la Fuente de Buckingham para la procesión o preferirías asistir a la Adoración y Bendición en la Concha Acústica Petrillo como un bello testimonio de devoción a nuestro Señor?

impacto espiritual tanto en usted como en su familia si pudiera asistir.
Yo sé que muchos de ustedes recuerdan con cariño la celebración de la Eucaristía en el Soldier Field durante el Jubileo del año 2000. Ese día yo recuerdo haber dicho algo que es tan cierto hoy como en aquel entonces:
“En este Sacramento (de la Eucaristía) nosotros los que lo celebramos y recibimos, somos cambiados y nos convertimos en seguidores de Cristo. Y en este sacramento esta ciudad es cambiada. En el curso de nuestra historia, la Iglesia se ha dado cuenta de que la celebración de este divino misterio no se puede reducir a un evento dentro de las paredes de una iglesia, y por ende, nos vamos a las calles del mundo. Marchamos hacia adelante con himnos y oraciones portando el sacramento del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Nuestro Señor. Nosotros vamos donde está la familia, donde las pasiones están presente, donde surgen los conflictos, donde los sufrimentos se consumen y la esperanza florece. Nosotros vamos a dar testimonio con alegría de que la Eucaristía es la respuesta a nuestras preguntas, consuelo a nuestro dolor y penas, un juramento de satisfacción para esa sed que nos quema; nuestra alegría que está en lo más profundo de nuestros corazones.”
Nosotros estamos unidos y libres en Cristo. Sigamos adelante para proclamar la unidad y libertad durante el Año Eucarístico asistiendo a la Procesión Eucarística el 5 de agosto en el Grant Park, donde alabaremos al Señor a través de nuestras oraciones y alabanzas en esta Procesión Eucarística y de Bendiciones.
