Dear Friend in Christ:
Our Catholic faith is a priceless gift from God. For most of us, that gift was passed on to us by our parents and family and nurtured in Catholic schools or through religious education programs. It is strengthened and renewed through the sacraments and through our parish life. It teaches us how to celebrate and to grieve. It inspires hope and dispels fear. It brings us the promise of salvation and eternal life. It is a gift beyond price, beyond measure.

We are called by God to share this gift and to experience the miracle that this gift is never diminished when we share it. This gift increases when we share it with others. Through the support given to the Annual Catholic Appeal, the gift of our Catholic faith is able to be shared in many ways.

Reserve Your Seat at The Table for the Lenten Hunger Banquet

Beginning this weekend, you can reserve your place at the Lenten Hunger Banquet. Reservations can be made after masses in the Gathering Space. Reservations are required and our suggested donation of $2 will be given to organizations that fight hunger here and abroad.

With 840 million people worldwide suffering from hunger, the problem of hunger is one that transcends national boundaries. While conditions are much better in the United States than in many other countries, hunger continues to be very real for many Americans. To be poor in our country is far different from being poor in sub-Saharan Africa, but poverty still diminishes the lives and undermines the dignity of many families who live in our midst. According to a U.S. Department of Agriculture report from the end of 2003 (PDF, 782):

The Wednesday night SPRED group is in desperate need of a helper catechist. We have a disabled friend who is ready to begin but we need to find a catechist for her. SPRED is a wonderful way to spend your Wednesday evenings connecting with a small faith community. We promise you will get more out of it than you put into it. Please help us complete our group. Lenten Mission Hunger Banquet, Tuesday, March 1, 2005

Oh, Dios, a los que tienen hambre, dales pan y a los que tienen pan dales hambre de justicia. --Oración Latinoamericana

El hambe continúa siendo una plaga en nuestro mundo porque la gente no tiene acceso a los alimentos o no pueden comprar los alimentos que están disponibles. Más de 840 millones de personas alrededor del mundo reciben nutrición insuficiente – cerca de las tres cuartas partes de ellos viven en comunidades agrícolas rurales. Eso es alrededor de la población entera del hemisferio occidental. Uno de cada cinco personas padeciendo hambre son niños y 6 millones de niños menores de cinco años mueren cada año como resultado del hambre. La mayoría de esta gente no son víctimas de las hambrunas que aparecen tanto en las noticias, sino que sufren de una “hambruna escondida” una hambre crónica que detiene el crecimiento, drenando la energía y potencial. Las raíces del hambre se encuentran en la pobreza, guerra, patrones desiguales de tratados de comercio, ignorancia y enfermedad.

Noticias De "La Cocina de mi Hermano"

En el septiembre pasado Reina de los Angeles, junto con varias otras parroquias, formó un comedor público que se llama “La Cocina de Mi Hermano”. Este comedor, localizado en la parroquia Nuestra Señora de la Merced en la Kedzie y Montrose, sirve comidas gratis cada Sábado de las 11:30 a.m. hasta la 1:00 p.m. Las comidas se preparan por grupos de varias parroquias, incluyendo Reina de los Angeles. A nuestra parroquia nos toca el quinto sábado de los meses que tienen cinco semanas. El Sábado pasado, 29 de enero, nuestro grupo sirvió una comida de tacos a 45 adultos y 16 niños. No todas las personas son desalojadas, sino familias que se encuentran en tiempos difíciles. El trabajo incluye planear el menú, hacer las compras, cocinar, poner las mesas, servir la comida y limpiar. Era bueno ver a tantos feligreses entusiásticos, incluyendo algunos de nuestros jóvenes, trabajando juntos para alimentar a los pobres, y divirtiéndose a la vez.

The Tuesdays of Lent – Annual Parish Mission Shared With St. Matthias Parish
Let’s address something that many of us can say about handing over four Tuesdays to Lenten reflection, “I don’t have time for that because there is so much on my plate.” That is the precise reason why we must hand over these four Tuesdays. There is so much on our plate that, for many of us, faith and God are on the fringe of the plate! Each Lenten Tuesday will be a different experience or way for each of us to find God. Try them! All evenings begin at 7 p.m.

Hunger can be hard to swallow:

• 842 million people worldwide are plagued by hunger
• 1.2 billion people—that’s 1 in 5—live on less than $1 a day
• Every year, 6 million children under the age of 5 die as a result of hunger
• In sub-Saharan Africa, 1 in 3 people are malnourished; about half live on less than $1 a day.
• More than 40 million people required emergency food aid in 2003
• Nearly 35 million Americans live below the poverty line

Statistics indicate the magnitude of the problem of hunger, but these are not just statistics. They are sisters and brothers, members of our one human family.

El Viacrucis Cuaresmal

La costumbre de rezar el Viacrucis durante el tiempo de Cuaresma es una tradición de la Iglesia muy antigua. Rezar el Viacrucis es recordar el camino que Cristo caminó con su cruz a cuestas y los sufrimientos que aguantó por nosotros. Ud. está invitado a rezar esta oración antigua cada Viernes durante la Cuaresma en la iglesia comenzando a las 7:30 p.m. Haga esto una parte de su oración cuaresmal.

¿QUÉ ES LA CUARESMA?

La Cuaresma es el tiempo litúrgico de conversión, que marca la Iglesia para prepararnos a la gran fiesta de la Pascua. Es tiempo para arrepentirnos de nuestros pecados y de cambiar algo de nosotros para ser mejores y poder vivir más cerca de Cristo.     La Cuaresma dura 40 días; comienza el Miércoles de Ceniza y termina el Domingo de Ramos, día que se inicia la Semana Santa. A lo largo de este tiempo, sobre todo en la liturgia del domingo, hacemos un esfuerzo por recuperar el ritmo y estilo de verdaderos creyentes que debemos vivir como hijos de Dios.
