NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD
The Church ends the Christmas season today with the Feast of the
Baptism of the Lord. Christ appears, now as an adult, and is baptized
by his cousin, John, as the heavens open and a voice speaks, “This is
my Son.” The Spirit descends. Christ Jesus moves from being a private
Jewish believer. He assumes his vocation: the public presence of God in
his life!
Vocation: the public presence of God in my life. Last Tuesday, January 4, the Church marked A Great Saint’s Life…The Feast of St. Elizabeth Seton, the first American born saint. Vocation: the public presence of God in my life. Elizabeth’s vocation….really her vocations – are many and remarkable.
Elizabeth Ann Bailey was born in 1774 to a prominent New York family, baptized and raised a staunch Episcopalian. In 1793, at the age of 19, she married – in the New York wedding of the season with President George and Mrs. Martha Washington among the guests - a wealthy ship builder and businessman, William Seton. They had five children. In late 1801 her husband was diagnosed with cancer. All cures failed. She heard of a convent in Leghorn, Italy where nuns cared for dying cancer victims and their family. William died in 1803 leaving Elizabeth, barely 30 years old, penniless. She called her husband’s final months the “holocaust of my life,” which she faced with faith and, by friends’ accounts, cheerfulness. Vocation: the public presence of God in my life. Elizabeth’s vocations: wife, mother of a family and widow.
Through Catholic friends who directed her to Italy and the sisters themselves, Elizabeth witnessed Catholic action and compassion. She saw three cornerstones to the Catholic faith not present in her Episcopal background: belief in the real presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, devotion to the Blessed Mother, and a conviction that the Catholic Church, historically and in an unbroken line, led back to the apostles and Christ. In March, 1805 she became a Catholic, and was rejected by her family. Vocation: the public presence of God in my life. Elizabeth’s new vocation: convert.
To support her five children, she opened a school in Baltimore. She gathered mothers for prayer and socialization. She felt she could do more with her life. In 1809, with four other women, single or widowed, she formed a religious community. This new order of nuns – some of whom had children – was approved of by the Archbishop of Baltimore and took the name The Sisters of Charity. Vocation: the public presence of God in my life. Elizabeth’s next vocations: educator and mother of a community of religious sisters.
In raising and teaching her own children and students now Sister Elizabeth Seton saw something lacking in schools: religious education. Her Sisters of Charity increased in numbers. Taking her new Sisters, and her own children, she walked from New York, to Baltimore, to Philadelphia to Cincinnati. By the time she died on January 4, 1821, at the young age of 41, she had established dozens of Catholic elementary schools along that route and built over 20 convents to house her sisters as they traveled from school to school. Another vocation: foundress and builder. In a letter to a friend she wrote, “God has given me a great deal to do.” Vocation: the public presence of God in my life. Elizabeth: wife, mother, widow, convert, religious sister, educator, builder, foundress of the Catholic School system in this country!
What’s Your Vocation? Not your job — your vocation. Where is the presence of God publicly seen? Where are the values of faith visible? What are you doing for God and God’s family? What is your holy work? What has God given you to do? The Feast of the Baptism of Christ…Vocation Sunday.
LA FIESTA DEL BAUTISMO DEL SEÑOR
La siguiente es una prédica que dio el Papa Juan Pablo Segundo cuando
visitó la Tierra Santa en la occasion de La Fiesta del Bautismo del
Señor en enero 2001.
Amadísimos hermanos y hermanas:
1. La fiesta de hoy, con la que concluye el tiempo navideño, nos brinda la oportunidad de ir, como peregrinos en espíritu, a las orillas del Jordán, para participar en un acontecimiento misterioso: el bautismo de Jesús por parte de Juan Bautista. Hemos escuchado en la narración evangélica: "mientras Jesús, también bautizado, oraba, se abrió el cielo, bajó el Espíritu Santo sobre él en forma de paloma, y se escuchó una voz del cielo: "Tú eres mi Hijo predilecto, en ti me complazco"" (Lc 3, 21-22).
Por tanto, Jesús se manifiesta como el "Cristo", el Hijo unigénito, objeto de la predilección del Padre. Y así comienza su vida pública. Esta "manifestación" del Señor sigue a la de Nochebuena en la humildad del pesebre y al encuentro de ayer con los Magos, que en el Niño adoran al Rey anunciado por las antiguas Escrituras.
2. También este año tengo la alegría de administrar, en una circunstancia tan significativa, el sacramento del bautismo a algunos recién nacidos. Saludo a los padres, a los padrinos y madrinas, así como a todos los parientes que los han acompañado aquí.
Estos niños se convertirán dentro de poco en miembros vivos de la Iglesia. Serán ungidos con el óleo de los catecúmenos, signo de la suave fuerza de Cristo, que se les infundirá para que luchen contra el mal. Sobre ellos se derramará el agua bendita, signo eficaz de la purificación interior mediante el don del Espíritu Santo. Luego recibirán la unción con el crisma, para indicar que así son consagrados a imagen de Jesús, el Ungido del Padre. La vela encendida en el cirio pascual es símbolo de la luz de la fe que los padres, los padrinos y las madrinas deberán custodiar y alimentar continuamente, con la gracia vivificadora del Espíritu.
Por consiguiente, me dirijo a vosotros, queridos padres, padrinos y madrinas. Hoy tenéis la alegría de dar a estos niños el don más hermoso y valioso: la vida nueva en Jesús, Salvador de toda la humanidad.
A vosotros, padres y madres, que ya habéis colaborado con el Señor al engendrar a estos pequeños, os pide una colaboración ulterior: que secundéis la acción de su palabra salvífica mediante el compromiso de la educación de estos nuevos cristianos. Estad siempre dispuestos a cumplir fielmente esta tarea.
También de vosotros, padrinos y madrinas, Dios espera una cooperación singular, que se expresa en el apoyo que debéis dar a los padres en la educación de estos recién nacidos según las enseñanzas del Evangelio.
3. El bautismo cristiano, corroborado por el sacramento de la confirmación, hace a todos los creyentes, cada uno según su vocación específica, corresponsables de la gran misión de la Iglesia.
Cada uno en su propio campo, con su identidad propia, en comunión con los demás y con la Iglesia, debe sentirse solidario con el único Redentor del género humano.
Esto nos remite a cuanto acabamos de vivir durante el Año jubilar. En él la vitalidad de la Iglesia se ha manifestado a los ojos de todos. Este acontecimiento extraordinario ha legado como herencia al cristiano la tarea de confirmar su fe en el ámbito ordinario de la vida diaria.
Encomendemos a la Virgen santísima a estas criaturas que dan sus primeros pasos en la vida. Pidámosle que nos ayude ante todo a nosotros a caminar de modo coherente con el bautismo que recibimos un día.
Pidámosle, además, que estos pequeños, vestidos de blanco, signo de la nueva dignidad de hijos de Dios, sean durante toda su vida cristianos auténticos y testigos valientes del Evangelio. ¡Alabado sea Jesucristo!
