The newly-formed Peace & Justice Committee at Queen of Angels has launched a new website, www.peaceandjusticechicago.com, to help spread the word and do the work of their ministry. Here are a few of the initiatives the committee is working on:

Before and after 9:30, 11 and 12:30 masses, the Peace and Justice Committee will provide information and resources on how Queen of Angels parishioners can support Fair Trade. Parishioners may also buy bags of fair trade coffee before and after these masses. Go here for more.

The second of a series of articles in anticipation of Cover the Uninsured Week (May 10 to 16), an effort to raise awareness about the problems of the uninsured and to offer a chance for parishioners to reflect on issues of faith, health and justice.

Thank you for Making our Sunday School Students' Work with Heifer a Success

The Queen of Angels Religious Education program and the parish peace and justice committee would like to say thank you to all the CCD students and their family and friends for their generous donations to the Heifer Project’s efforts to fight poverty and hunger. The students raised over $475 and this amount was doubled through a matching grant.

“OLIVER!” AT ROOSEVELT H.S.
The Fine Arts Department of Theodore Roosevelt High School will present the musical “Oliver!” at 7 p.m., Thursday, May 6 and Friday, May 7 in the school auditorium at 3436 W. Wilson Ave. The school is presenting the musical as an invitation to neighbors and the community to see the new and inviting spirit of Roosevelt H.S.

POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION FORUM
A forum for Postpartum Depression will be presented from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6 at St Martha Parish, 8523 Georgiana Ave., Morton Grove. Learn about this illness, signs to watch for, and what to do if someone seems affected. Hear from medical, community and pastoral personnel on their response to this problem. Call 312-751-8351.

HRAIL PROGRAM OFFERED TO SENIORS
(Home Repairs for Accessible Independent Living)
The Ravenswood Community Council (RCC) is looking for senior neighborhood residents age 60 and older who are in need of minor home repairs. Through this City program, the RCC works with contractors who perform bathroom repairs such as installing grab bars, transfer benches, handheld showers and other installations to make the bathroom safer. Repair and replacement of windows and wheelchair ramps are available. Installation of smoke detectors/carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers also is included.

Eligibility is based on age and applicant’s yearly income. Free services available to those who qualify. Call Mary at the RCC at 773-583-1600.

National Donate Life Month

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This April marks the nation’s second annual observance of National Donate Life Month. This is a time to remember those heroes who gave life through organ and tissue donation. It is also a time to remember those who have received the gift of life.

Most especially, this observance reminds us that there are still many more people who await the gift of life. Their futures are uncertain, for our nation is experiencing a critical organ shortage. In Illinois alone, more than 4,400 men, women and children are waiting and hoping for transplants that will save their lives. Last year, nearly 300 Illinois patients died while waiting.

Please join Catholics and communities across the country as they take part in numerous events and campaigns to promote donor awareness. The message is simple: Donate life. Decide to be a donor, sign a card and talk to your family.

I ask your support of this campaign by helping to promote this message. We remind all Catholics of our faith’s support for donation and transplantation as one of the highest expressions of human compassion and giving. These are basic principles upon which our Catholic faith is based.

Please consider participating in National Donate Life Month by discussing our Church’s teachings and statements on donation and transplantation with your families, friends and co-workers. Please consider the faith-based decision to give the gift of life.

With more than 83,000 Americans waiting for lifesaving organ transplants and thousands more waiting for life-enhancing tissue or cornea transplants, we must all participate in this campaign.

I ask you to support National Donate Life Month in honor of those who gave, o behalf of those who received… and with hope for those who continue to wait.

MINISTRY OF CARE PROGRAM
Among the Church’s ministries, the care of the sick, the aging and the frail has been essential. The Ministry of Care Program is an outreach to those unable to participate in the celebration of Eucharist because of illness and age. This ministry allows people to experience the nearness of God through the presence of the faith community and through the reception of the Eucharist.

Parishioners share in this ministry, bringing the Eucharist to patients in Swedish Covenant Hospital and to our homebound parishioners. The next Ministry of Care Training Program in our area will take place from 8:45 a.m. to noon on three consecutive Saturdays, beginning May 8 at St. Clement Parish, 642 W. Deming Place.

The Queen of Angels Technology Committee will sponsor the second Irregularly Scheduled Comedy Night Fun-Raiser at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 21 in the Voss Center.
